Good analysis for Mitchell in his only 2 years, but it is near impossible to predict his ceiling. Hungry, hard-working players are the ones who improve their game, and Mitchell seems like that type of player.
Your analysis is interesting. I am going to think about it. Basketball is such a team sport that is all about position and efficiency in situations. What is Donovan consistent at when it comes to scoring? Where is he the most the most potent? Does he have any "consistently unstoppable" shots or moves that free him and draws fouls?" What reads does he make consistently that lead to scores? I have never analyzed his game. You are going to make me do it. Thank you.
Out of college, known as a DEFENSIVE PLAYER, becauseof his wingspan not height. 😂😂😂 At Louisville, Mitchell never got this much freedom on offense. Maybe point guard is a better spot, then draft a SHARPSHOOTER at the 2-spot.
Donovan is physically gifted enough to get easy baskets he just needs help in Utah to carry the load and his outside shot has improved since college and is expected to get better
@@polklovesrt10 Pretty much. Utah has some damn good role players, an all-star caliber center, and great coaching. But they need an additional weapon on offense that won't suck entirely on defense.
Right they run a good offensive system but their offensive talent is easily worst out of any playoff team they play great d and don’t turn it over though
Well I think that size has nothing to do with vision. Stephen Curry and Kyrie Irving stood at similar statures early in their careers, both being middle of the road playmakers with difficulty in seeing over defenses. Mitchell's improvement rests in whether or not he can improve his execution enough to warrant his bad shot selection. His ability to read defenses should improve if he becomes an off the dribble three point threat. Improvements can be made, and there is a definite possibility he can achieve top 10 status. However it completely relies on whether or not he goes from being a 36% three point shooter to a 42% three point shooter. While it will open his game, that level of status from beyond the arc is no easy feat to overcome. I'd rather not bet against players as good as him so early in their careers.
I'd bet against it unless he actually shows he can improve it even before he hits his prime. Its not a video game where these young guys have any amount of potential coming to learn basketball knowledge and incorporate it in their game flawlessly. Hell some people have ceilings to their BBIQ as well and thankfully Mitchell has it on both ends of the floor. Blake Griffin coming into the league was an explosive athletic dunker but it took him 7 active years working on things in the offseason like having a functional jumper where he was very comfortable shooting from beyond the arc as well with having a post up game. But you can see that progress even by the time he was in mid 20's.
Good video, but like we're talking about this is his second year. I think part of his low scoring efficiency is due to a second year player being tje focal point of the opposing defenses. The sophmore slump exists due to the fact that teams have now had a year of tape to find and exploit weaknesses. I feel his true potential will be dependent on how he is able to improve upon thosr weaknesses.
My comment might come off as laughable but there are so many things that Donovan does well thats not necessarily seen in the box score. His intensity and killer instinct are what set him apart from most players I think. Give him 2 years with a little maturity and a better situation in Utah and I think he will be one of the best Guards in the West/League. You can't coach passion and the 'mamba mentality' and I think spida has it.
Utah should allow him to be a point guard and let him develop his playmaking abilities more, rather than him just being a scorer. He’s already a smaller 2 guard as is why not shift him to the 1 and start there, it’s not like they have a point guard of the future on their squad rn anyways
This kid has potential to improve, he’s already a great value in the league and what I like about him is that he’s willing to work hard and get better, expect him to be an even better player in the next 2,3 years or so
After watching the break down now yeah his potential of geting better will be even better 😊, he's a sg lol not a point guard but those small steps of getting better even looks better only yr 2 seriously he's getting good just got to work on that Jump shot plus this happens always ppl don't understand yr one yeah we don't know what he plays like so they don't know how to defend him, yr2 it's on him to get better cause now everyone knows how you play, that's why I love this kid, he never stops to improve, if he didn't get injured too in the start of the season man he's a all-star but west is so loaded
You covered good bases there. I've heard some refer to his game like Allen Iverson's where he needs to dominate the ball in terms of offense but the team overall gets the most out of it. Though I think maybe Mitchell gets better with time to add to his bag of offensive tricks as well with having a better jumper. But that also limits the ceiling of what the Jazz can build their team around Mitchell. So his best back court teammate is going to have to be someone who works best off ball but has the ability to light it up.
This is not a criticism just a thing i noticed watching your videos. You make the most football references out of any basketball analyst i have ever heard.
@@jakejackson1189 pretty much the same defense wise better blocker, steals Mitchell is better, perimeter wise slightly better for there start as a rookie

Funny how the title of this video hits so different 3 years later, with Wiggins being the second best player on a championship winning team and Michell playing like an MVP candidate (though probably not winning it).
Just discovered your channel, seems like it's new! I love the content you're putting out there so far, keep up the good work. It seems like you're coming up real quick! I'd love for you to make a video on D'Angelo Russell's huge season this year and how he went from a potential 'bust' and 'snitch' on a kobe-led lakers team that allowed for no development to being traded to one of the worst teams in the league wth seemingly no hope and then going on to have a 20 ppg season this year, all-star, and lead the nets to a current 6 seed berth in the east.
Wiggins is much more talented. Put Wiggins in Mitchell’s spot with all the spacing, off ball movement, and great pick and roll big man like Gobert and Wiggins would perform like an all star. And if Mitchell was in Minnesota how would he do as an isolation scorer with no spacing, no screens, no off ball movement? Even without a restructured offense when Wiggins finally got the ball at the end of the year he posted 48% fg 40% from 3 the last ten games with coach Saunders stressing better shot selection.
Actually, Dirk's over-rated; there's been some sort of uncritical love-fest going on about him lately. He certainly was in on the ground floor for stretch bigs, but he's about half the player Larry Bird was, another slowish big blond with an outside shot and a high release point. Larry was the complete package. Dirk has just lasted long enough to put up huge lifetime scoring numbers.
I really liked the work ethic of Allen and him paired with Mitchell will become a pretty solid backcourt however they will not go anywhere until they get a better power forward or small forward.
I wish they played exum at the 2 more and Don at the 1. Both can defend well and play off the ball but also play make. But Exum brings that 6'6 frame at the 2 that is more traditional matchup wise and Don at 6'3 if not shorter matches up better when going against point guards which could help with his development as a playmaker and consistency. Another thing that would help him is getting a high post game. Something his Idol and most compared to player Dwade could help him with this offseason. Even though he is undersized at the 2 he is extremely physical and bulky kinda like a cp3. being able to slow the game down throw it to him 15 feet away and use that strength and explosiveness would fit his game perfectly. He likes the midrange shot which is rare for younger players but he also has a quick first step and can finish at the rim which is perfect for the high post/faceup game.
His second half of the season answers the question pretty well: 44 games (Jan-April), 26.5 pts, 44% FG%, 42% 3P%, ~4 rebounds, ~5 assists. Donovan started the '18-'19 season with a foot injury. Definitely slowed him. Jazz probably beat Houston in the playoffs if they even had shot somewhat poorly instead of epically bad - 26% on 3PA. Mitchell ends up totally spent as a one man show with almost no support on the offense. Will he be as good as Dwayne Wade? Wade is one of the all-time greats. It would incredible for any player to reach that level. Will Donovan be a fabulous player for many years? I have little doubt.
He is a version of Dwayne Wade, childhood hero was LeBron but today he’s infatuated with the excellence of Kobe Bryant. Mamba Mentality isn’t reduced to screaming after dunks or taking shots, this ensures he’ll be a great player for years to come. I’m very excited for his career and he’s very inteligente. I’d say he’s an All Star level player already (and in stretches of his rookie season) just like Luka Dončić. This league is in a great place.
Everything on this video was great except for the rim protection part.. As a guard that's not part of the defensive scheme for his position, and I don't understand why he's criticized on that for this video
'mitchell's biggest down side on defense is without a doubt his size' Rajon Rondo has left the chat* This is a great video, huge fan of Mitchell and a big rondo fan, I meant no offense from the top lines, just kinda being an ass lol. Thank you for the detail and effort put into this video.
As a pistons fan I’m still haunted by the fact they look Kenard over Mitchell. Would love to see a video about the anomaly that is Andre Drummond and love your content!
I've noticed that you use pretty computer-science-y terminology when describing players in your videos ("visual processing limitations," and in the Tatum one "programs running in parallel")... Makes them unique!
what video ? I love Lonzo but obviously the Lakers should and would, if NOLA lets them. Right now, conflicting reports seem to indicate LA has offered up the farm but New Orleans is refusing to trade with them.
Mr. Ulee Lonzo shoots lower than 42% from free throws, I would trade his ass in a heartbeat for AD. For a reference Zubac (his teammate) this season is converting 86.4% of his free throws.
A lot of his early struggles probably had to do with him needing to adjust to being gameplanned against a lot more this season than last and maybe trying too hard to prove last offseason wasn't a fluke, shooting for a breakout season. If cuz stays healthy, I think he's set for a big 3rd season. He started the season poorly in terms of efficiency, but since then he adjusted and, over the last 3 months of the season, he's been putting up about 25 pts 5 rebounds and 5 assists on 44-45% shooting overall and almost 40% from 3. Also at 6'3", they probably just need to let Mitchell go ahead and be the point guard in a scoring point role.
And yet wade said himself he wished he was that good that young (referring to Mitchell). Wait till this year now that Mitchell has guys around him that can score--it will open up his game.
wades shooting doesnt come close to mitchells though, its just a comparison, hes still a young player. Mitchell has the record for most 3s ever by a rookie and most 3s ever in a playoff series at 52%. Wade couldnt ever shoot like that.
I think that he could fix some of those things with maturity and reps, he has to work hard. In defense he should try to learn a lot from Chris Paul, one great disruptive defender which is also 6'1 (I think) and has a smaller wingspan
He is definitely not the next Wiggins. We as audience truly feel his mentality of hardworking. True he is not the most gifted player but he does have a gift that is very rare among modern players: The gift of hardworking. Last year he improved so much as a rookie and transform most of his weapons to NBA. And this year after hitting on the wall he recovered and work hard on overcoming his weakness. This is something Wiggins doesn't have. Even Wiggins is rated as Tier 1 player he will still lose against Mitchell one day
What he needs to do is trust himself into a leadership role and get hungry for a championship because I believe the Jazz are going to do it! go Donovan!
Your videos are beautiful. I already love basketball and even if I didn’t the words you choose and the presentation makes your content very interesting. Please keep making videos like this I’ll support the grind when I can 👌🏽
I would love to see a Kawhi Leonard video. The reason Kawhi is such a valued player in the league is due to his two way ability, but it is so hard to quantify the defensive abilities of players. Your videos do a great job of breaking down players' defensive value, and I would love to see if Kawhi is as good on defense as everyone says he is... I am not sure if Kawhi is still in a tier by himself as a perimeter defender or if he is living up his previous rep.
The Jazz need to implement a slower system. We saw this with the Lakers in 2010. Lakers despite only scoring 101 points (12th in the league) they held the best record in the west. Sowing the game down means defenses get set and contested shot making become necessary. That’s why although Kobe only shot 45% for his career if you look at opponent field goal percentage and difficulty of shots Kobe was far superior than any non-big outside of KD and LeBron. Also half court sets are better for Gobert. Despite his ability to run in transition as a lob catcher, he is much more effective in a pick and role situation.
Great analysis. However it's missing one vital fact: Utah's second scorer is Rudy Gobert so Donovan Mitchell has to shoulder a lot in his second year, and all the focus is on him. Add a reliable second option like Tobias Harris and things start getting easier over night.
While I agree that he has a limited ceiling, if he improves his 3pt shooting, it would be huge for him. I also dont think of the Jazz as a team loaded with shooters. Crowder and Ingles are the only two other guys who can really shoot on that squad, and both are a bit overrated when it comes to spacing the floor consistently. Mitchell could benefit greatly from a well spaced floor. Between that and a few more moves when it comes to finishing right at the rim, he could take the next staple to becoming a regular all-nba guy. I know those are all big ifs but I see a driven dude with a fantastic work ethic so I think its possible.
Mitchell is different but is off to a similar start to his career as Damien Lillard. I feel like Lillard, Kemba and Wall are the level of player that Mitchell will be. He doesnt look like a Superstar. Solid star in the league. Awesome player
Some of Mitchell's shot selection problems come from the fact that the Jazz depend so much on him to create for everyone. His usage percentage is historically high. www.sltrib.com/sports/2019/02/03/donovan-mitchell-has-been/ The guy has a desire to be great that will get him through the mistakes. Jazz fans are willing to let him learn on the job because we can see the high ceiling he has. In his prime he is going to be a force.
Not bad. But no mention of the fact of his high usage rate. Plus the fact a bunch of his shots are buzzer beaters or end of shot clock that jazz team throw to him with 5 sec left. I think with rubio gone. Mike con joining. He will be 27pt plus a game with the floor being spread. Mitchell will have more assists this year then first 2 years.
I remember that Mitchell is supposed to be an Avery Bradley type of player that only specialised defence but somehow developed to be an all-star calibre player.
Love your channel and what you do. Its a great blend of stats and play breakdown. Mitchell and Utah seem to be overlooked in most situations. I hope he irons out his shot selection because I really like most of his game, he's such an exciting player.

WhateverReally L
Lonzo is not even close to as good as AD was as a rookie, so of course they'd trade him in a heartbeat.
LOL. Also make a video about why AD should not be traded to the Grizzlies for Chandler Parsons
Mr. Ulee
Lonzo shoots lower than 42% from free throws, I would trade his ass in a heartbeat for AD.
Can you do a video about the resurgence of dynamic bigs in recent years? AD, Embiid, Jokic etc
We need an update to this
Wade is my favorite player. I don't see the comparison. Donovan is something else and nowhere near as good.
Even Wiggins is rated as Tier 1 player he will still lose against Mitchell one day
I'd love to see a version on Ingram. I'm generally not very high on his game but interested to see what you think.
He showed this world cup as the only one that he can be an all star
Fair analysis for Donovan this year. The big shame was Gobert not getting selected.
What he needs to do is trust himself into a leadership role and get hungry for a championship because I believe the Jazz are going to do it! go Donovan!
Why the reupload?
the first one got copyright striked
People don't understand that the scouting report makes a difference once they have 82 games of tape on him.
I just watched like 6 videos of your channel. I really like your videos and can't wait for the next one
Man, you re the real bball analyst. Best in YT no doubt.
Great analysis. However it's missing one vital fact: Utah's second scorer is Rudy Gobert so Donovan Mitchell has to shoulder a lot in his second year, and all the focus is on him. Add a reliable second option like Tobias Harris and things start getting easier over night.
They always criticized DeMar DeRozan for his mid-range heavy game, but love it when Kawhi Leonard does it.
Hypocrisy
Because Kawhi is a lot more efficient.
I still think he'll be great
While I agree that he has a limited ceiling, if he improves his 3pt shooting, it would be huge for him.
Honestly his offense is overrated and his defense is underrated
MItchel >>>> Marketing Simmons ROY
Some of Mitchell's shot selection problems come from the fact that the Jazz depend so much on him to create for everyone. His usage percentage is historically high.
www.sltrib.com/sports/2019/02/03/donovan-mitchell-has-been/
The guy has a desire to be great that will get him through the mistakes. Jazz fans are willing to let him learn on the job because we can see the high ceiling he has. In his prime he is going to be a force.
Re-post?
Best Basketball Breakdown. Hands down. Keep giving us the fire bro. Thanks for your time and content.
I remember that Mitchell is supposed to be an Avery Bradley type of player that only specialised defence but somehow developed to be an all-star calibre player.
I think Legend of Winning just stole your Lonzo Analysis video
Haha it does appear that he did!
This is why the Jazz could’ve really used Mike Conley. Rubio isn’t a dangerous enough shooter to free up new space for Mitchell to work.
Imagine how good he will be once Dennis Lindsey finds him an actual offensive sidekick
"His 6'10" wingspan reaches a lot of balls"
PAUSE.....
Jk, keep up the good videos.
Love your channel and what you do. Its a great blend of stats and play breakdown.
Mitchell and Utah seem to be overlooked in most situations. I hope he irons out his shot selection because I really like most of his game, he's such an exciting player.
Donovan Is my favorite player
