I have the 2021 Omen 15 as my work laptop and its nice. Gaming laptops were the best way during the shortage for me to get a good CPU and multiple display outputs in a laptop. It's maybe not the best laptop on the market but there isn't anything massively egregious. I did have trouble with a RAM upgrade but that could have been DOA RAM. I mostly use it docked so I'm not looking at the display and using the keyboard/trackpad often but the times I do I'm not disappointed.
Fan noise is quite loud, the thing will crank them up when needed which is kind of nice to not be limited by the cooling but may not be for everyone

Great and accurate review. I bought the Intel version of this two days ago. The soft and wobbly screen was the first thing I noticed and I dislike it. Performance is a beast and I actually love the basic black slab styling vs tacky Gamer aesthetics. The bad webcam and the speakers! oh lord they're bad. The Bang and Olufsen label means nothing. I want to like it but ultimately I'm returning it tomorrow. HP was SO close on getting this right.

Which laptop did you purchase after all? I went Asus, but the damn thing arrived with several dead pixels. Still trying to decide what to buy, particularly since I do not want soldered RAM.
Wow, I got my HP omen 16 with good specifications and Intel i5 13th gen, i also didn't like the wobbly movements when closing or opening the laptop, but i think it's pretty nice for gaming and also using it to work or study, which I do. Depends on everyone but for me it's a good option!
Bought the 2021 Omen 15 recently for $1200 CAD, same config as showcased here except with a 5600H, no complaints so far for the price. My screen doesn't wobble and opens with one hand, if anything I wish there was a groove at the front to ease opening. I love the chin, that allows the screen to sit higher. I always prop up the back end of the laptop so that the screen sits at eye level. I also never notice any fingerprints, neither on the brushed plastic top nor the keyboard deck. You people need to wash your hands more often lol. BUT the speakers are just okay and for God's sake enough with the 720p webcam. I like the huge trackpad since I have big hands but let's be honest, nobody's using a gaming laptop without a proper mouse

Thank you Matthew Moniz for doing the review of the HP Omen 16 gaming laptop i always wanted to get one myself.
Last year's 5800H model was $850 on discount... Gaming laptop prices are just insane this year.
Its more to do with inflation and rising costs. Everything is more expensive unfortunately BUT you're right last years model is a sweet deal
Best Buy selling all AMD version for $750 today…at that price??? I HAD to.
I have to 2020 Omen 15 and it's a decent laptop that I use as a blend of gaming and official school work. I have been using this as my daily driver for almost 2 years. Some of the benefits of the old version I got was the ridiculous 300hz display although it's equipped with an rtx2060 and intel i7 10th gen chip. Yet the older model has a single USB-c, it supports thunderbolt. Otherwise, the edges are quite sharp, like sharp enough to almost cut you, and the bottom housing is very easy to crack, so if possible I would recommend getting an additional back plate If care about the cosmetic look. Also, the feet come off very easily because they have no adhesive they are just heat shrunk on there. But if you find a good out-of-box deal they will last a very long time with some cosmetic damage but are worth it. I bought mine for around 950 and today if you check today they cost anywhere from 900 to 1,000 in good condition.
Update: just last week the entire motherboard fried itself because I plugged it a outlet in my high school. PLEASE DON'T CHARGE GAME LAPTOPS AT CRAPPY HIGHSCHOOLS. We also experienced hot HDMI cords

Here in iran we have China version of omen 16 2021 with 11800h and 3060 115 watt which has a num pad in right corner of keyboard and a 1440 panel, for about 1230 us dollars, which i think is a great laptop
Funnily there's actually 2 configurations for the Intel 12th gen models. The H1 released products gets a Max-Q variant GPU but the H2 releasedproducts gets a fat GPU at 140W-150W respectively. It's gonna be real hard to find the right GPU type since it's probably region dependant this time around.

If anyone happens to be looking around for a budget gaming/editing laptop and sees this comment - you'll be hard pressed to find a used example with the intel 12700H but luckily there's still some out there. You can definitely find the OMEN or similar models with the 6800H much easier. Regardless, expect to still spend between $780-850 depending.

I have an HP omen 16 2021 i7 RTX3050, Almost a year into buying the laptop I get at the max 2 hours of backup now earlier it was 4 hours, how is it that there is so much difference. Performance is excellent but really disappointed with the battery backup. I still do not understand how you're getting 9 hours.
There's just something with the omen 16 that makes it look less slick compared to the omen 15. Heck even the victus 16 looks more clean than the omen 16 imo. Overall great review!
Looking at my 15 the biggest difference i see of bat is that the 16 is a little thicker and the hinges have been cheaped out.
The hinges on the 15 really do make a huge difference. Also, The rounded corners really do stand out in a bad way on the 16.
The 15's corners are *sharp* and feels much more refined.
if they just increase the build quality of the top lid this will be a sexy laptop
No one. I mean NO ONE talks about Windows trackpads for more than a couple seconds. Every reviewer compares them to Macbook's trackpads, but they don't show you how the trackpad works. Does it have mushy buttons, can you click it anywhere, do the gestures work without the cursor flying all over the place? You know, the things that a macbook trackpad does well.
All the reviews are about specs and shit.
Atrociously designed laptop (HUGE bottom bezel, cheap and bendy plastic all around, 16:9 screen) but man the Ryzen 6800 series is gonna be magical in a proper laptop such as the upcoming Lenovo Legion 5 Pro and 7. Imagine the battery life on the Lenovo Legion 7 2022 which has a 99wh battery. Matthew, love your previews! They are always well-documented and funny!
The bottom bezel is fine, being thicker means the screen is placed a little higher easing your neck lol. 16 by 10 is ass for gaming, i tested 25 or so games, all of them either zoomed in and cut off the sides(giving super low fov), stretched everything or gave me black bars. Everything else i agree with.
Good luck with Lenovo Legion 5 Pro...the released Intel lineup is indeed faster than hp offering but quite noisier and more power hungry

@@ij6708 i know, im kind of tired all the "GIVE US 16 BY 10" sentiment the gaming laptop community has. If youre a content creator/use it for work sure, go get a 16 by 10 laptop(plenty of options already) but gamers are praising it when they dont even know it sucks for gaming.

Nobody has problems with their wear level? I got this rig recently, at first it was 12% wear level, then I made some changes and calibrated the battery and got 7% wear level. But the next day I was at a 9% wear level...
Always, I have observed how most gaming laptops with good battery life have AMD 6000 series CPUs in them. Intel does get better performance-wise at higher power especially. But it's, better to have more thermal and power budget being available to the GPU, and lastly, AMD has a good integrated GPUs that can save you a lot of battery where absolute GPU power isn't a priority.
The 6900HS battery isn’t great in gaming laptops.

Hello, I have the same laptop, it will be 1 year next month from the 5600h model. It started to get very hot while playing games. Ready or not or FH 5 was 92-100 degrees, when idle the fan noise increased and the battery capacity decreased from 71" to 60". While playing games, the battery level drops to 75%, how is the situation with you?

I have this monster and its awsome! When im home its pluged in as my desktop replacement but when i need to go out its great to know you have all the power of the RTX with you (pluged in thouh), still a beauty for video editing and 4k gaming (i do rocket league, hitman, city skylines and gta v). My only complaint its that its a bit ugly inside and no touchscreen.
hey Matt, I just got my asus zenbook pro 16x OLED i9 a few days ago and you NEED to do a full review on this thing. I think its the future of the perfect laptop for a content creator who also likes to game a bit or just really dislikes mac. once the next gen comes out and they take away this 60 hz screen then there is nothing I can complain about on this laptop. its extremely quit and versatile. only future upgraded needed is a 120hz panel while keeping the same color accuracy and maybe an option to go over a rtx3060. but anyway hope you review it. I really think you'll enjoy it.
Its not the hinge that is causing the wobble. It is the soft frame around the monitor.
I have the 2021 Omen 16 - RTX 3070/R7 5800H - Picked it on discount. I had the Legion 5 17'' first - but returned it and kept this one. Why many ask? Here is why I chose this over the Legion:
The Screen: Less backlight bleeding. I hate bleeding on IPS displays.
Keyboard: Although its mushy it's still far better than the one on the Legion for my taste.
Speakers: The speakers are loud and clear! - not much bass but on the Legion the sound was like the laptop was submerged under water.
Powerbrick: This one is a sexy little thing. The legion had an actual chinese brick! at twice the size and weight.
Design: This looks like a normal laptop, not a gamer laptop. This one I can use at the coffieshop without feeling like a sweaty teenager.
The trackpad: The size and feel is good, not macbook good but good. On the legion it felt like i was back on windows 98.
Batterylife: about twice the batterylife than on the Legion.
Cooling: With a custom fan curve this thing is almost zero db at idle and with gaming its just good. Good cooling and does neither get warm or throttle.
Reasons to pick the Legion: More watt rtx 3070 and mux switch. if that's not the most important thing for you - This is the king of budget gaming laptops!
So if you can find a Omen 16 2021 on a heavy discount you can make yourself a good deal.

@@Xardimods i dont know the 2022 version first hand. But right now in denmark the 2021 versions are at heavy discount. And the 2021 model with 5800h ibstead of 6800h is like 900 euro cheaper 😊

I'm honestly disappointed in this year's on omen brand., and a lot has been reduced from the previous version, build quality is very good, especially the one released in 2019, I'm still using the Omen laptop released in 2018 and this laptop is really good for long-term use, so far there have never been any problems except changing the battery every 2.5 y, and I replaced the thermal for 2 years once and the temperature never overheated. I hope omen returns to its heyday back in 2017-2020
What’s your favorite gaming laptop this year if you had to buy ? I was wanting to wait on the flow x 16 , or the new legions but I’m super turned off by them being over priced compared to comparable units . If you had to buy …. Or have you purchased ?

I've the omen 16.1, i7-11800H and the battery life is really really bad. i bought it brand new and it lasts at best 2.5 hrs on normal use without gaming is that just me or something wrong with this.

I had a Omen 15 2019... and last year it just died out of the blue, took it to service cneter and they said that the processor died....🤔🤔even they battery degraded within that time....now got a Tuf15 its slimmer, more powerful (obviously) and run way cooler than Omen

Thermal exhaust on the left or right is a big issue on a laptop though, (for right/left handed people respectively).. whenever you burn the system to 100% performances ur always boiling your hands :/. HP had this terrible design on their laptops 10 years ago, and sadly they still.
Well most gaming laptop with beefy specs have left and right exhaust as well, but HP somehow place them in the middle instead to the back, where your hands won't be getting burned due to how behind the position is

Either way, I did notice single rank installed and that will get a ~10% performance hit on AMD chips 😢
So I just did a lot more digging, Anandtech did a breakdown on DDR5. They show single rank isn't as bad as in DDR4 but if you use two dimm's per channel (i.e. 4 sticks) you get a performance hit in single rank vs 2 sticks in single rank 💀 lol. And of course it's even worse with 4x dual rank sticks. DDR4 barely makes a difference if you have 2x dual rank or 4x single rank 😁
Side note, if it's 16GB than it's single rank. So if you want dual rank memory you have to go with a minimum of 2x32GB memory for optimal performance.
Why is the rj-45 slot on the side :( makes no sense
I'm looking at buying a new laptop in the next couple of months, the primary one I'm thinking of getting is the 12700H/3060 Asus M16. I'm not interested in a GPU higher than that, or the 12900H CPU because the increase in performance, isn't worth the extra cost, heat & worse battery for my use case.
The thing is though...Should I pull the trigger in roughly a month (I'd be aiming to buy in September/October) OR, should I wait to see if the AMD Ryzen 7000 series, due in Sep15th has any laptop refresh announcements. I mean if they refreshed the M16 with Ryzen 7000 it'd be an absolute monster of a laptop.
I’d say wait since it’s only a month from now until they drop the 7000 series. Even then you would also have to wait couple months after until ASUS manufacturers would implement their chip.
No chance they release an announcement for next gen laptop CPU's till early next year.

this is my model OMEN 16 Gaming Laptop 16-n0006na - AMD R and so far I have had 2 of these, the first one I sent back and the one I have now, I may be sending it back because it only gives about 4 to 5 hours of battery life even after calibrating. and there is no way to turn on the 8 gigs of dedicated video ram from the bios or the operating system, so the computer only uses shared system ram. very disappointed
Good video Mattew, I love this laptop a lot of people criticize the screen, if it has flex and I think the hinges should be better but for the rest I like the aluminum on the keyboard how easy it is to update and the thermals are good, Lenovo knows better but anyway I really have a friend with a Lenovo and the manufacturing seems to me to be of poorer quality and the problems on the screen I see on rigid screens, I love the design, it doesn't scream gamer, and finally other companies sell you that they have steam chambers and new thermal pastes and when temperatures exceed 100 Cº, it seems like a robbery to me and they can certify it with the previous Lenovo and Alienware, I don't know what the new Lenovos are like but I didn't like the previous ones

Not having a good hinge is a big issue ! Playing game is an intense task and usually you might do it in group and little movements that will lead to screen wobbling is really annoying i had this experience with my old vio(sony ) lsptop
I have a similar omen laptop the (INTEL i5-11400H Version) I HATE the Keyboard (num lock randomly activates and deactivates) the trackpad is inconsistent and can be unresponsive at times. I have installed the latest HP drivers and the issue persists.
Mine only last about 4 hours..
