Joe, good for you to point out that "Rise" in pitching a Fastball (Four-Seamer variety) doesn't actually mean a baseball is defying the pull of gravity, rising at any point from a level plain of trajectory. It is still descending on its trajectory path with gravity. Just less so with good rise. "Rise" on a Fastball in Baseball-speak means more the optical illusion of rising in in the eyes & mind of the batter at the plate. A human's eyes & brain kind of fooling itself with its assumption of how traveling objects are supposed to move on its path. A lot of folks don't understand what Baseball people are actually communicating when they say rise in a fastball.
That is well articulated. Yeah I think it’s important to be precise when talking about these types of things. Baseball is definitely the type of game that brings together analytical people and just pure sports people.
