I’m doing a Trumpeter steam engine right now. Love it. Clear instructions except zero color call outs. Keep these trains coming Trumpeter; take my money.

Great review Nige, not something ever thought about in this scale - in trains it's more the OO/HO and N gauges. which is another expensive hobby.

For those who do not want to do it WW2 style:
Two of them where used by the west german Bundesbahn into the 1960s (actually V188 IS the Bundesbahn designation) so you can do them in civilian colors hauling regular trains

Looks like a fascinating build, Nigel. Love some intricately detailed running gear, me. The "things" I believe are axle boxes.

Have fun with that squiggle camo. Like the back of a brook trout. I have curved track for Leopold & of course a 1/72 scale Leopold. That Soviet snow sled reminds me of Johnny Quest. A 60's science based cartoon seen on Saturday mornings. Nice kit but, Dora in 1/35 scale is insane. I guess Andy's HQ has commissioned a 1/16 scale Sherman through Takom. He expects his test shot in to review. That would be a build.

The boxes near the wheels are sand boxes used to put sand on the track to assist with wheel grip in icy or slippery conditions.

Thanks Nigel - great review. That's a big kit! I'm also hoping HobbyBoss will release a 1:72 version of this (as they did for the other Trumpeter locos) to go with my 1:72 Dora. There is actually a free STL file of the V188 in 1:72 for 3D printing, plus the ammo wagons, but a kit will be more detailed of course.

V188 is the later (modified) trains used after WWII. D311 was the designation of the train(s) that was used for Dora/Schwerer Gustaf. There are differences, just so you know.
What free stl have you found of the V188? I've only seen one that wasn't exactly "spectacular" in quality, but there are perhaps some I've missed?
      www.e94114.de/V188_en.htm
Here above is some excellent reference material for the D311 (from a real train aficionado) that I've been reading up on! I'm building a massive diorama for my Schwerer Gustaf, including major parts of the support staff guarding the cannon, and support trains, armoured vehicles etc etc. I've started modelling the D311 from gathered information and reference photos, but if there's a great 3D CAD model out there for free I'd be very happy for a link!!! There's a guy in Germany that's been modelling a near perfect CAD model - including the interior, bolt for bolt, but he's not done yet despite working on it for over a year and he's been a major part as my reference material... ;)
      Cheers

the boxes you pointed out at 35:00 are sanders, they drop sand on the rail head for added traction and prevent wheel slipping.

@@NigelsModellingBench Yes lot of steam locomotives have one or two sandboxes on top of boiler between steam domes with long feeder tubes to each wheel.

Hi Nigel, this looks like a great kit. I remember seeing it in The Modelling News when it was first released. Lots of exterior detail. To bad the interior is empty. There was probably a big diesel engine and a generator in each of them. I'll be watching for the build. Have a great day. Jeff

Its a very modern looking train, i would never have guessed that it was 1940's vintage. Looks like something that would be bombing around the UK in the 1970's

I'm almost finished 3D modeling the D311 (post-war V188) in 1:72, along with all the goods trains with shells and ammo. I'll 3D print them, and put them next to my 1:72 Dora 🙂

I`ve bought this kit today and perused the painting and marking guide. Don`t use the decal numbers 1,3 and 4 if you want to build the Wehrmacht version. They are only markings for the west german Bundesbahn since 1949.

Hi Nigel. It’s two power units coupled together with a bar coupling .its a Locomotive not a train . The train is what it pulls. The links at front and rear are called Screw couplings. It’s a pity they didn’t include something to represent the Diesel engines inside seeing you can see right in

great review but.......................... I miss the fact that the kit is wrong named and the decals are not correct. Wrong named because it is a "wehrmacht D311" and after 1945 the engine was numbered "Deutsche Bundesbahn V188" or from the sixties onwarth "DB 288"
Wath the decals shows is incorrect there is no sign of decals in the kit to make a WM D311 a/b ore a DB V188/288.
Painting sceme! those from Trumpeter are al wrong except "walli" and the last was not oficial. The engine was painted in Wehrmacht grey never in camouflage green. The wallipainting was a winter camouflage painted on it by the crew.
Updat; building the kit is very disapointed. Details are very good aspecial the electro motors and its chassis but................................ where is the diesel motor and the electro agregat? so the engine roomis emtie! There for a build me a dieselo motor and agregat
