Thank you very much for adding the values and edge control in the captions as well as not speeding the video up. This video showed me how to get passed "ugly" phase of the process right after putting in the division between the shadow and lit areas. My edge control is bad. Very helpful.
i dont mean to be so offtopic but does any of you know a method to log back into an instagram account?? I stupidly lost my login password. I love any help you can offer me.
@Jairo Braden i really appreciate your reply. I found the site through google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff atm. Takes a while so I will reply here later with my results.
very methodical approach in explaining creating the facial features from scratch. It is very important for beginners how to have precise proportions without using the square method. I am experimenting with creating monochrome black and white portraits. Have done many pencil sketches in the past but using black and white paints, brushes and medium are way different than working with pencils and erasers. It is always good to learn new techniques anyways. Thanks for the video.
I can already see the soul of the person in the first few minutes...i appreciate the real time, although it is fascinating to watch it appear quickly as well.. gorgeous skill sir)
I agree!🥺. I’m going to paint my daughter and it will be my first portrait and you are a master in showing how its done!🤩 just a little stroke and you make magic! It showed me that i have to work with the shadows and that is how you do it! Awesome thanks!
I am totally trying this tonight! can't wait to get off of work and PAINT! BTW I really appreciate this video it is one of the only one where we get to a: see the palette AND b: see everything in real time
Thank you so much for posting this. I’m about to paint my first portrait and amounts all the other vids I’ve found for black and white portraits this one was the best by far. Thank you so much for posting ♥️ keep it up 🙂
Great Skill, and a fine approach. I appreciated the discipline involved in reserving values until you moved on to the next, saving highlights and darkest darks for last. Brilliant.
thank you zin you teach me a lot, color, value, core shadow, cast shadow, and also how I used to the light everting you teach me zin, I would like to say thank you very much zin... I am from Africa, Ethiopia
this is amazing, I wish I could give it ten likes,, I have been painting my whole life but in a coupe of minutes you have taught me something quite profound about the power of the darks, you could have stopped with the darkest tone and still had a perfectly readable picture, thank you.
That's beautiful Zin. Been looking for a video like this for a while, i will take some ideas from your technique and hopefully will make mine abit easier
Such a amazing vid, and I also would've wished If you had your refrence open for some seconds at the start so we know what your working with and try to solve something with you
thank you so much for taking your time to share. it is very gracious of you and greatly appreciated. i would like to say i wish you didn't. speed up the eyes portion. I'm not sure how many people would like to see your technique for painting eyes. however, that being said, thank you so much for taking the time to share
I love bw portrait but on youtube I don't see many of these. You are great as always. Can I ask you what type of brand oil color do you use and how you deal de support (canvas or board) ?
Lim, I love your work, you're a real talent. But please...don't fast-forward the final details at the end, it's the icing on the cake and yet you rush it. We don't get a second to enjoy the final result!
Would you use the same paint colours when using a glaze for colour afterwards or would you prefer to use say raw umber, white and ultra marine blue perhaps then?
Nice work, where can I find the type of brush you use?i have been searching on net, they are unavailable.i am from india Can you suggest be an alternate brush
Hi again, I got another question! at 25:20 you start blending. I was wondering if thats because you started using a medium? Im new to oil painting, started just like a week ago... so I was wondering if from the beggining were you using mediums, or at 25:20 ? Really thanks for these videos. And sorry for two questions!
that is why it is pretty hard to make a default black paint when it comes to portrait. Better make use of your own mix of black! tho of course it still depends on how you want the painting outcome. enjoyed the video!
Hi! I am new to this but really interested in an amateur way. I don't understand the edge control.. Do you just use a new color that is in between the lighter and the darker shades or a different brush or both? Thanks for all you efforts in putting this video together for us to enjoy!
Hello. Do you think liquin would work for a painting like this instead of linseed oil? Also, did you do this in one sitting, or did you wait for layers to dry. I’m very new and trying to get into oil paints, thank you.
How Old Are you? and when did u started painting? i'm 17 and i just started learning painting on my own from videos!. i'm good at drawing and the beasics like perspective, anatomy(but havn't mastered them)..but the thing i suck at is painting!! can u give me some tips? And yeah i paint digitally! because traditional is pretty expensive xD
+Himesh Anand I believe skills are teachable. They should be on top of personality and philosophy. If I go back to age 17, I would try experimenting more with my life and have wider/deeper perspective on human beings.
I'm 17 now BTW xD ..So basically u want me to master my anatomy, perspective first and then move on to painting? ..i think this is a good idea :D .but still u know i have an urge to paint and i can't stop it! xD .are there any books that u can suggest? i'll try to read from them and will learn as much as possible!
Each book has it's own style of approach and goal. Read alot and find one you like at that time. That is the best book for you. The reason I make my videos are because there are things that books can not teach. So you can use my video as a visual guide by each principle.
Zin Lim just started oils after 3 years of drawing.. your videos really helped me alot. The way you work is close to how i draw portraits in graphite.. always reserving highlights and darkest values for last!
Hi Zin. First of all thank you so much for the educational videos. Will I have big problems doing this exercise without any medium at all ? I mean, the paint will be too sticky ? I am alergic and I have heard about people painting without any medium at all, only strait out of the tube. My only experience is with watercolor. Second, becoming a patron will I have access to this full video in real time, without the speed up on the end ? Thank you so much . (sorry any english mistake)
Paint in tube is pigment+linseed oil. So I use linseed oil only. Please take a look at membership benefits by clicking join button and you will see what will get. Thanks for watching:)

Thank you so much you really help me out!
@Nicolas Torin happy to help :D
wow, such disciplined painting. not a brush stroke wasted. impressive!

Great video. Magic pieces coming through. Like your use of darkest grey under her nose in two strokes and her nose became 3-D! Thank you:)

+Ioannis Fiore Thanks for watching:)
What do you use to make your drying shades of paint fluid again. Like at minute 23:00
Sunflower oil. Linseed oil works too.
Does it work with acrylics too or do you need to use something different for that
Only for oil. Use water for acrylic.
Superb.
Awesome tutorial!
Amazing . Thank you
Your so great a big respect for you and god bless you🎉🎉🎉♥♥♥
Thank you so much!
Can you do an acrylic one too?? This is amazing I love your style
Someday:)

Haha, I thought painting eyes is so slow and people could be bored.
I will make real time video more. Thanks.
very nice work!
May I ask which black you used? Nvm found it in description
แบบนี้ วง 321 ต้องกลับมาแล้วละ อัลบั้มใหม่ รอเลยคับ
I want to see one done in black and white pencil
I love bw portrait but on youtube I don't see many of these. You are great as always. Can I ask you what type of brand oil color do you use and how you deal de support (canvas or board) ?
I don't really care for brand so use mix of any brand of oil. On smoother surface of canvas.
Lim, I love your work, you're a real talent. But please...don't fast-forward the final details at the end, it's the icing on the cake and yet you rush it. We don't get a second to enjoy the final result!
Warren C the icing its not important whats important the other if the cake isnt good the icing wont be good
Would you use the same paint colours when using a glaze for colour afterwards or would you prefer to use say raw umber, white and ultra marine blue perhaps then?
+PHeMoX
I haven't color glaze over black/white monochrome but rather like earth tone monochrome under painting in case for glazing with color.
Nice work, where can I find the type of brush you use?i have been searching on net, they are unavailable.i am from india

Ok thank you!

Your videos are wonderful, i can't thank you enough. Hope you are doing well 😊
Thanks alot:)
you made it look so easy ;)
Which brush you use tell me please
is this using oil? Can I do this with acrylic
What's with the ending? Why the rush?
It is wonderful and easy

Edge control include blending to soften. I used wiped brush.
How do you know it's 5 values and not 12? I want to learn to paint... i have had no formal education but I'm just trying out things...
Aim 5 value and allow 44 different values coming out through progress.
Whahaha its even 44
Thank you.
+Chris Jay Thanks for watching:)
So so so nice
Awesome video, but it would more great if reference is also shown, this will help follow along the video and learn 😁
+Parshuram Kamble
I will do, when I can pay enough for the models.
Nah I think this is good if you want reference just skip to the end take a screenshot and compare to the beginning cost free and effective sir
+The Horror
That's good idea. I will try insert the finished image in a side of video until I get the original reference paid. Thanks.

It's canvas pad.
@@zinlimart thank you

I don't use toxic medium such as liquin. One hour sitting.
