Different techniques of playing the Ney in contemporary music: Interview with Valentina Bellanova

The Ney player Valentina Bellanova demonstrates different techniques how to play both traditional and contemporary microtonal music. The Ney is a very traditional instrument in Arab countries in addition to Turkey and Iran with a history that goes 6000 years back. However, the early construction and design of the Ney was not very different from today. This interview was conducted in the framework of an AGYA music workshop. Musicologist and AGYA member Rami Chahin gathered a diverse ensemble of composers and musicians from Brazil, Canada, Egypt, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Palestine, Poland, and Syria who ventured a contemporary interpretation of traditional Arab maqamat.
