Yeah they wrote Lois that way in the 90s 'Lois & Clark' series as well. I thought it was brilliant because Lois has always been written in the comics as a strong willed alpha woman so it makes sense that she'd much rather think with her head than her heart most of the time.
One issue with Smallville, they took too long to develop clois and wasted all that time on Clana. Lois was a guest star for the longest period and I think that was unfair to her character. For many people she felt like second choice to Lana and that was hardly fair to her.
I don't really see it that way. Mainly because Smallville really started out to be about Clark's small town life. I doubt the showrunners expected the show to go 10 seasons, so as the series progressed, it was only then did they decide to bring in Lois, but Clana was well established at that point and both Lana and Chloe were the main female characters, so Lois had to take a backseat to both of them until the time was right. All the while, though, the Clois relationship was low-key developing and maturing and each season, you could see them getting closer and converging more and sharing the same beliefs and ideas. Then Lois took over as the female lead the last 2 or 3 seasons. If Lois had been a full on lead her entire time, it would have just been overexposure like Clana. Instead, it was a methodical, perfectly paced and written relationship that grew naturally over time with Clois. The show illustrated well enough to me why Clana just didn't work and why Clois did. Lois wasn't the second choice. She was the right choice.

There are more mistakes, too many of them to list but bottom line is that it sucks how long they kept the Clana thing dragging. Only to have the Clois begin so short and worse using repeated materials from the previous seasons.

But they chose this moment to bring lana back and have him start up all over again with her. It only ended after she absorbed a crap ton of kryptonite. So it really never felt like clark CHOSE lois, but more like he decided to pursue things with her after his first choice literally became walking kryptonite to him. I think what wouldve been better was at this moment, they show clark struggle with the choice between the 2. With lana coming back and her constant secrecy and to have clark actually turn her down when he realised she once again came back not just for him but some ulterior motive. She was always trying to be his equal rather than just be with him and be there for him like lois. Even if they made him blow her off without knowing that subconsciously it was because he was having feelings for lois. But something to show that he was putting his foot down and finally consciously choosing NOT to be with lana, but possibly someone else. That's why (to me) it never felt like he actually chose to fall for lois, it just felt like his next best option after he couldnt be with lana.
Notoya Arthur love that idea so much. Cause it is true how Lana always wanted to be Clark’s equal plus she would never let go of her painful past. She has to always be on a mission of revenge, finding her family instead of cherishing what she presently had. She also never could stand being in Smallville yet she always returned. The people behind the show also love making Lana the object of some form of obsession. As for Clark he only showed resistance to Lana when he discovered her secret of spying on Lex. They were rooted in friendship and respect and it was perfect except for that one point. I just would have appreciated if things ended up properly and maturely with Clana.
These Season 8 episodes made me realize how immature and unready Clark still was at the time to fulfill his destiny and be with Lois. He was still tethered to the past and afraid of the future. It wasn't until he was free of Lana (***me does the happy dance***! lol) that he could really see that Lois was so much better for him and that he could be both the hero the world needs and have a happy existence with his significant other, Lois. Clark just was never really happy with Lana. Yes, he loved her, but love wasn't enough. Lois gave him love AND happiness!

Season 8 also represented Lois becoming the woman who would become Clark's tether to the world. Erica Durance's portrayal of Lois is the main reason I watched the last three seasons of Smallville.
It wasn't immaturity as much as it was unresolved issues. He and Lana never really were together the way they wanted to be until she came back in season 8. They both got the closure they needed to finally end things in a real and permanent way, so that Clark could finally move on.
We don't know if he was still alive. I think her dad died in the explosion that Lionel's henchmen setted in the house where Chloé and him were supposed to hide.
Lana doesn't even know how to tie a tie but Lois does & she can put on cuff links which takes Clark by surprise. This is why Clark becomes more & more infatuated with Lois because she unknowingly has ways of surprising him. With Lana it's always angst angst angst while Lois is the opposite.
These are things that martha did for Johnathan too. She would do his cuff links and tie. It was always nostalgic for me to see lois doing the same things for clark... knowing what the future had in store for them.
I hated that. I feel like Lana coming back and then eventually being forced not to be around Clark was disrespectful to both Lana and Lois fans. The way the show ended Lana/Clark made Lois always feel like Clark's second choice (even through she and Clark were obviously already building toward something, as seen here). I would've rather Lana and Clark made the mutual decision to stay apart than the stupid kryptonite storyline.
spacexbutterfly I do agree, I would have preferred a mutual “ break up” But, I took it as symbolic. Lana was toxic/poison for Clark metaphorically for years. She literally became poison to him physically in the end as well. It was proof they weren’t meant to be.
It was obvious that both of them in this episode was trying to figure out what they were feeling, Lois was just a bit ahead of Clark in her feelings. But Clark got thrown off course when he seen Lana again, and clearly was trying to decipher his feelings for her as well. The first two episodes of her arc would of been fine... but the last two was shit. The way they had him fall back over her again and take away the one good sacrifice she made. Such bs. However the lyrics with the couple/person were perfect for what was coming. Clois- I am looking for an inspiration And I think I found it in your heart It's the kind of thing you get when you're not looking. I felt so bas for her in this episode. Of course Clark cares about Lois a lot, but he just wasn't ready to admit it. After she retured she thought she made a fool of herself, so she kept her distance. IMO: Their whole relationship played out like a romantic comedy on the show. lol Clark is on cloud nine when he's with Lois and vise versa. Awesome and Iconic Couple : )

So many people forget that smallville is about Clark’s growth into superman. He isn’t superman until the end of the show! We get to see his development, and that’s why we get clois later on rather than right away. Clark had to evolve.

They should've had him come to the conclusion that lana wasnt right for him because she was always constantly trying to be his equal rather than be his strength and support and just be with him. Which was what lois did. She never tried to be super with the blur, she was just like "I'll be ur sidekick, I'm fine with u having to put me aside for others. What do u need from me? How can I help u be the best u?" As opposed to Lana's constant, "I need to be strong enough so that I don't lose Clark or clark doesnt have to constantly save me or so that me and clark r on the same level". Lois never tried to hang on like that, she always let him go do his thing and just said, I'll be waiting when u come back. I wish they hadn't made him get back with lana after this episode. Because then it felt like the only reason he finally let lana go was because she became walking kryptonite and they physically couldn't be around each other.
I think because writers are taught in school that you add obstacles and complications, then resolutions, as you build to a climax and denouement... this is what Aristotle told us to do. Or they needed to fill time.
As I've watched the whole series, I conclude that the screen writers are very good, but also total jerks, because they are forever jerking us around with interruptions. They get off on it. So many times it would've been nice to just let the pieces fall where they may without the writers throwing in that monkey wrench. It was one of a few things I found very annoying about the story. Everyone barges in on everyone at the most inopportune time. I guess nobody knocks anymore but just barges in. And how many times does kyrptonite play a part in the series - 20,000 times. If there really was that much kryptonite everywhere, then Clark would've been sick every day of his life in Smallville. It would've gotten in the food through the soil and their drinking water. And after awhile the krypto interruptions got old by the second season. It's like telling the same old joke over and over. You get sick of it pretty fast.
I never noticed how Lana obsessed Smallville was, there was only 1 season where Lois and Clark are together?! I wish there were more Lois and less way less Lana
If it were me, I would smacked a very tender/passionate kiss on Lois ignoring all interruptions. It was the perfect time. And she was gorgeous in that outfit and vulnerable to Clark. The writers and directors are such killjoys. I'd like to douse each writer with a large bucket of ice water.
To be honest, I think the writers could have done a much better job for these two. For seasons 4-7, their relationship was mainly just teasing one another. In season 8 they finally started to grow and feel that romantic side, but it felt so fast. So much of their relationship growing is done offscreen that it makes me kind of pissed off.
No... if you watch closely, Tom Welling manages to pull off a slight grimace smile before going straight faced again. It’s like oops, she didn’t just think I was bareing my heart did she?
I didn't really care at first when lana showed up cuz they technically weren't together and I thought she'd leave again after like 2 episodes when clark wud make a suttle decision that he didnt love her as much as he used too, not leaving after 4 episodes I think, getting with her again but can't b together cuz they litturally can't be within Ten feet of each other!
Love how well this played out over time . Honestly, I would rather have seen lana and clark end at high school (or paris) - as clana was a wonderful coming of age "girl next door" sweetheart relationship - those do not need to extend forever - people can grow and change - they could have kept lana around - as an old friend and first love - without the need for angst. The slow clois evolution could still have been growing over the years - clark needing relationship experience in college - that way eventually when they fell to their obvious yet growing attraction - they were both more experienced and ready. Lois falling for clueless clark overtime - at first with him not being her type - but then eventually realizing he was indeed exactly what she wanted. Clueless clark and denial lois are just a treasure to watch.

Clark is so dumb sometimes... Poor Lois, for one moment she think Clark speech is about her. But worse is what happen next, when they are about to kiss and then Lana appears, and of course Clark run to her... Never gonna forgive showrunners for that moment, time after time Clark choose Lana and it's not until Lex's plan separates them forever that Clark remembers Lois... Common boy, look what you have in front of you, not teen love, the real true love for life. Lois was always there for him, she deserve more. At least once they recognize what they feel about each other, they give us unforgettable moments, the best Lois and Clark, miss Smallville so much, my favorite show then and now.

I am no fan of Lana, but honestly, it was the writers who screwed up by bringing in Lana.
spacexbutterfly I do agree, I would have preferred a mutual “ break up” But, I took it as symbolic. Lana was toxic/poison for Clark metaphorically for years. She literally became poison to him physically in the end as well. It was proof they weren’t meant to be.
They were in love since forever, but they didn't know it.
It was obvious that both of them in this episode was trying to figure out what they were feeling, Lois was just a bit ahead of Clark in her feelings. But Clark got thrown off course when he seen Lana again, and clearly was trying to decipher his feelings for her as well. The first two episodes of her arc would of been fine... but the last two was shit. The way they had him fall back over her again and take away the one good sacrifice she made. Such bs.
However the lyrics with the couple/person were perfect for what was coming.

I felt so bas for her in this episode. Of course Clark cares about Lois a lot, but he just wasn't ready to admit it. After she retured she thought she made a fool of herself, so she kept her distance. IMO: Their whole relationship played out like a romantic comedy on the show. lol

@@naitololTV I get that and I agree they needed closure with lana. But they should've made him reject her because of her constant secrecy and search for power and need to one-up Lex. They should've had him come to the conclusion that lana wasnt right for him because she was always constantly trying to be his equal rather than be his strength and support and just be with him. Which was what lois did. She never tried to be super with the blur, she was just like "I'll be ur sidekick, I'm fine with u having to put me aside for others. What do u need from me? How can I help u be the best u?" As opposed to Lana's constant, "I need to be strong enough so that I don't lose Clark or clark doesnt have to constantly save me or so that me and clark r on the same level". Lois never tried to hang on like that, she always let him go do his thing and just said, I'll be waiting when u come back. I wish they hadn't made him get back with lana after this episode. Because then it felt like the only reason he finally let lana go was because she became walking kryptonite and they physically couldn't be around each other.
I think because writers are taught in school that you add obstacles and complications, then resolutions, as you build to a climax and denouement... this is what Aristotle told us to do. Or they needed to fill time.
As I've watched the whole series, I conclude that the screen writers are very good, but also total jerks, because they are forever jerking us around with interruptions. They get off on it. So many times it would've been nice to just let the pieces fall where they may without the writers throwing in that monkey wrench. It was one of a few things I found very annoying about the story. Everyone barges in on everyone at the most inopportune time. I guess nobody knocks anymore but just barges in. And how many times does kyrptonite play a part in the series - 20,000 times. If there really was that much kryptonite everywhere, then Clark would've been sick every day of his life in Smallville. It would've gotten in the food through the soil and their drinking water. And after awhile the krypto interruptions got old by the second season. It's like telling the same old joke over and over. You get sick of it pretty fast.

To be honest, I think the writers could have done a much better job for these two. For seasons 4-7, their relationship was mainly just teasing one another. In season 8 they finally started to grow and feel that romantic side, but it felt so fast. So much of their relationship growing is done offscreen that it makes me kind of pissed off.

Honestly, I would rather have seen lana and clark end at high school (or paris) - as clana was a wonderful coming of age "girl next door" sweetheart relationship - those do not need to extend forever - people can grow and change - they could have kept lana around - as an old friend and first love - without the need for angst.
The slow clois evolution could still have been growing over the years - clark needing relationship experience in college - that way eventually when they fell to their obvious yet growing attraction - they were both more experienced and ready.
Lois falling for clueless clark overtime - at first with him not being her type - but then eventually realizing he was indeed exactly what she wanted. Clueless clark and denial lois are just a treasure to watch.

Lana's coming and going beginning to get annoying. Indeed the writers screwed up with this matter. Even after Episode 14 in this season the writers weren't bringing these two together. That is the most irritating part. Superman is all about Superman/Clark and Lois not Clark and Lana. 8 season for Clana and just 2 season for Clois (out of 2 just 1 was properly dedicated Clois)😏
