    • @hoodedman07
      @hoodedman07 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hoodedman07 ya know I'm not sure yet. Gibson certainly is putting the best foot forward. I haven't had the chance to play many (yet). And a 60s standard is def on my radar. The prices are fair and it seems Gibson is FINALLY listening to customers.

  • @modergav
    @modergav 5 ปีที่แล้ว +42

    FACTORY wiggle stick Mark we missed you... one thing Gibson obviously should do to this guitar Channel with mark: Not only presenting the new models but also a show with older models (yes including norlin era) to keep the history alive. But not only the guitars some factory tours, and some brand's trivia.

    • @gryzew
      @gryzew 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah they still can't get any reissue / historic / classic or whatever to sound like the originals (and I don't mean "as good as" -- just that they sound different) so they would shoot their own foot by showing that all their "clones" aren't really clones.

    • @modergav
      @modergav 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gryzew well the pickups are wound differently, the woods are not the same anymore, either the glue. Btw this originals series don't even have a true ABR1 bridge. Of course they don't sound the same. They are cool guitars. Maybe inspired by those predecessors but not even remotely close in sound and construction

    • @gryzew
      @gryzew 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@modergav yes I know and also my point exactly. Gibson's marketing is "we recreated the old stuff as accurately as possible (until next year when we'll again say this is the year when we got a '59 right)". So they can't start showcasing the original guitars, the whole "it's a good idea to buy a $7k guitar" is based on the notion that it will be close to the real deal. Even 70s LPs aren't safe to show... pancake bodies, 3pc maple necks, spine crushing weight and those T-Tops weren't PAFs but they can still deliver a bite that would put shame on some of the current dull sounding Gibson guitars.

    • @gryzew
      @gryzew 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@modergav They don't make money by showing their old guitars. They could remind of the weird models of Norlin era by doing some limited edition reissues, but those would probably work better as Epiphones. "Affordable spec'd" Gibson USA guitars are dead as an idea after the S series. It's still better for them to focus on QC in their core models, JC still needs to install a few more lightbulbs as I've seen it's still not perfect when you start looking for tooling marks etc. with a flashlight on their post-Henry 2019 guitars.

      AMS dot com was selling all 3 of theses as 'EXCLUSIVES' for 2019 (issued September 2018 w/'57 Classic's instead of '61's & 19TH Fret Neck Joint instead of 22nd Fret). I had to send 2 of the Sideways version back, one had Fret-Board ROT ! and one had the sideways tremolo, when retracted, it hit the Guitar cable, back it went !...so I got the MAESTRO version and its called the 2019 'SG' 'ORIGINAL'.....it is a CANNON, BUT, my 2017 SG Standard is a better Guitar! The '19 SG w/Sideways Tremolo had 3 '57 Classic P-Up's in it and it had the best tone on any guitar I ever owned...too bad it had to go back !

    I have this beast in burnt cherry, almost looks black until you look closely or are in the right light. And it's absolutely beautiful! I Love this axe. At first you'll have some irking tuning instability issues when using the vibrola, and it will piss you off. The good news (or not so good) is this vibrola system requires about 20 hours of playtime before all the nuts and bolts, screws, saddle, bridge and tuners adjust themselves to a point where they settle into the guitar and finally stop detuning it. After this 20 hour breaking in time you'll have an axe of outstanding tone and playability that can play any style and genre and stay in tune. You won't want to put it down.

    I wanted to buy one of these Gibson SG Standard '61 Maestro Vibrola in Vintage Cherry for a while. After watching your video on this guitar i was totally discouraged from making my purchase due to you not being able to keep it in tune. But I went down to my local Guitar center here in Las Vegas and they had one in stock. I held it, the neck is outstanding the fret work is wonderful, the wood grain and color were so beautiful. I tuned it up and played a few cords and check the tuning, for sure it was out of tune. I fooled around trying to keep it in tune for three hours and became totally discouraged because this guitar was beautiful. So I did the only reasonable thing, I said to the salesman I am going to flip this Guitar Center pick, "blank side it stays here written side I buy it". It landed on written side so home with me it went, and boy am I glad it did. The next day I set out to find out why it wouldn't stay in tune and I discovered why, (fixed it) and now it's hard to knock it out of tune. First the tuning keys were lose and the screws holding the tuners on were striped from the factory, so i fixed that. Second the angle on the Vibrola is wrong from the factory, you need to tweak the angle and shim the Vibrola slightly, the E-string should not be touching the trem bar while in the resting position. Now polish the frets and do a complete set up. This guitar now when using the Vibrola as intended will stay in tune wonderfully. This guitar is a great guitar and if you take the time and put in the work to set it up properly, YOU WILL LOVE THIS GUITAR! I think that from the factory they just assemble the parts and are done, not realizing or having the time that it needs to make this fine guitar function together as a whole instrument. Glad I took the time and made the purchase. Please let your viewers know this is an amazing Gibson Guitar after the corrections are made. I Have no connection with Gibson and I am not a professional Luthier, so if i can fix it this guitar is fixable.
    Thank you

    If it’s hand soldered than does that mean the quick connect system is gone??

    There was this guy who use to teach about the history of all these great guitars. He was on a vintage guitar channel. Looked an awful lot like you. Except this guy I’m talking about wore a leather jacket with zippers on it. Always trying to relic the expensive ones. Again.. great to hear from ya again mark

    I just bought a new 2020 gibson custom shop 64 SG STD with maestro trem and a gibson nashville custom shop 64 es 335 cherry custombuckers. Both sound great im very happy with the tone,playability.i have 1 complaint,1 wish gibson custom would have used a better grade of indian rosewood like the early mid 2000 custom shop guitars.i know its expensive but other companies hav it available why not Gibson.u paid $5299 for the ES 335 and $4599 for the 64re SG. For these prices every effort should be made to provide THE highest quality materials. Please respond since your their spokesman

    I bought one in 2016. I’m glad I bought it because I love batwing guards. Would have preferred the electronics in this one though.

    They could not have picked a better person to rep the brand. Very glad that Mark is showing off the quality that Gibson is returning to.

    Would be nice to hear more playing Mark - let's hear what these tapered pots sound like!
    Very slick... I think some of the SG's you did at GOTD were the best sounding of all.

    great but sad the 'playing' didn't match the audio. Still happy to see anything SG. I miss my '64 all the time and love my second G-400.

    That was the guitar Mick Taylor played in the infamous Rolling Stones '69 tour that ended at Altamont, CA! You can see it in action in the movie, "Gimme Shelter".
