Good review -- except for the bus ride and 1 item on your wish list. It already has the quick release lock for standing upright. Read the manual. That's what those two loops are for on the tip of the handlebars. Also, I live in a hilly town in PA and it's not as bad for going uphill as you would imagine. You're right, though, you can't stand up on it, but you're already in a pretty high upright position when riding.
Hi: Did your bike arrive? What do you think of the bike? I think this is a great review. I am car free and ride bikes and bus in Denver and I'm thinking of buying a collapsible. What kind of riding do you do?
So in short casual cyclists think it's too heavy and too expensive yet most experienced folding-bike riders view it as a novelty or a bike with many limitations and drawbacks for commuting or utility work. I'm surprised the Strida has been on the market as long as it has.
Very comprehensive review doesn't do Strida full justice. I've owned MkI. Mk3 and now Mk5 over a year. With such experience of Strida I've developed tricks and habits neutralising ALL the negative points made. Strida is a bike for NOW and for FUTURE. You learn how to use a Strida differently as it is a totally different experience from riding bicycles. STRIDA is not a bicycle; it is a Strida. I am 'partially disabled' due to ME and my has Strida allowed me to be totally independent for years.
I agree. I own a Strida EVO and I love it - over all my other more traditional bikes incl. Brompton - which is probably the equivalent fodling bike in it's class/size. I used to ride BMX in my younger days and when I first bought the Strida EVO (for the size and fold) - I HATED IT. Yes - I refused to ride it for 6 months! I though was a bad buy - then when I forced myself to ride it - I LOVED it. I realised that many people complain about the limitations of the Strida is because they are used to traditionall bikes eg., in BMX I would stand up and pump pedals etc - things I can't do on a Strida. I had to UNLEARN my old bike habits - and then I developed new way of riding the bike aka the Strida EVO - and now I find it the EASIEST most portable multi-mode commuter bike there is. I hope Ming Cycles continues to manufacture this great bike. I feel many people do not realise it's potential - like me till 6 months later !! =)
Thankyou for the nice detailed review. I agree - this is a unique bike. Love or hate it. =) I strongly urge anyone reading to consider the Strida EVO model - internal 3 speed hub on 18" wheel set --- probably faster than most 3-speed bromptons (as I own a brompton also). One of the weaknesses was up-hill climbs - the Strida EVO "aces" this on 1st gear -- EASY. One drawback gone.
It's an over-priced bicycle with an awkward design, it's not compact when it's folded, it does not please the eyes when you look at it and I doubt if the ride is any better than a bicycle at 1/10 of the price.
15lbs?!? The Strida already weighs a couple of pounds less than the Terns ans Dahons! The only way to make it lighter would be to make it carbon fiber, and there's no way on earth it would be less than 1 or even 2 grand, let alone 400$!!!
Thanks!
