I say “your world frightens and confuses me” at least once a month. I saw this skit the first time maybe 18 years ago and it’s stuck with me ever since. Hartman was a true genius.
Agreed. Criminally underrated master. Any time I watched SNL back in the day and I saw Phil; I knew I was going to laugh my ass off. What a tragic end to a brilliant comedian.
No tricks, no gimmicks, no surprises - they tell you right up front that the skit is going to be about an unfrozen caveman lawyer, and that's what they give you. After that, it relies entirely on the skit and the acting. And the fact that it's still hilarious is a credit to the excellent writing and the incredible star that Phil Hartman was. This skit is classic and still cracks me up.
There is a twist in this sketch though. You go into it expecting the common tropes - a grunting brute speaking broken English - but instead you get a man who is not only able to function in society and speak like a normal person but to also exploit the misconception about his people to advance his career. "Even a primitive caveman like me knows that my client is entitled to no less than $4,000,000 in damages."
The real genius is how they recap the premise three times in the first minute or so (the opening narration, the theme song, and Mr. Kayrock's statement to the jury.)
That transition from his banging the club in his hand as a caveman to him slapping one hand into the other to emphasize a point as a lawyer always cracks me up.
I think he was drawing attention to the fact that it was a gold Rolex-type watch. That caveman had it going on! (Plus, the caveman angle was the best advertising campaign Geico ever had;)
I was just noticing that right before I saw your comment. I was thinking how that actually comes off as something that would normally happen in real life. That little touch of realism that most folks don't really think about. Most actors would've easily gone into their lines without including that little touch.
RIP Phil hartman. A true pioneer and advocate for the cavern dweller and cro magnon-american communities, at a time when it was rare to see unfrozen cavemen and cavewomen in Hollywood playing anything but stereotypical hunters, or the occasional gatherer he truly showed that what geological era you come from doesn't have to define you, and that our hominid ancestors are much more than the monolyth from 2001, a space odyssey.

I've watched this skit countless times and it never gets old, but better. Wished Hatrman was with us still. Rest his soul always. Such a huge loss to us all. Miss him dearly.
The brilliant reason why this sketch works so well - is because the way they wrote the caveman, he is actually SMARTER than people today. The point is: we've actually become dumber as a society over the 100,000 years, rather than advanced (as we all believe), and thats why its so easy for a caveman to advance and successfully become a lawyer, argue and win his case without a challenge, raise a family (in what appears to be no time at all) and still make it to run for Senate under the guise of cutting taxes lol (which everyone wants and is a common augment - btw, the fact that its for capital gains, which is just to benefit rich people like him, is even more perfect). Excellently performed by Phil Hartman, and just reams so much of how Lionel Hutz was written on The Simpsons
Watching this again after all these decades, man: Hartman rules. The little moment where he checks his watch right before giving his summation to the jury is such a specific piece of performance, so *true* to actual lawyering, and probably he could've sold the piece without it. But it's just a nice detail that a million performers would've missed.
Trying to wrap your head around the layers of this premise and the all the subtle details in all the jokes (like him checking his gold watch and the “..get out of my BMW and run for the..hills..or whatever”) is like trying to figure out quantum physics. The music I grew up with is now referred to as "oldies" - It's called getting old :)
Haven't seen this skit in years and it's just as funny, if not more so than before! Phil Harman was a comedic mastermind!
I always thought he looked like Gene Simmons in this get up!
These moving pictures coming from this magic box I’m holding is to much for my primitive mind to comprehend. But what I do know is Phil Hartman is awesome.
We missed out on SO MANY LAUGHS when we lost Phil so early. Continue to RIP, funny man.
One of my fav skits of all time. I loved it when I was 13. I love it now that im 40. My friends and I have been quoting this skit for a long, long time.
I loved this character, so much 😂
One of my top 5 SNL sketches ever, and I love it even more for its reference of Happy Fun Ball, one of my other top 5 SNL sketches.
🤣🤣🤣 He's so full of it!
Wow! I forgot just how much I used to love watching Saturday night live and how much skits like this one ment to me in my early years..
FINALLY.
i've been waiting for this for years.
Unfrozen and thawed out by scientists. Then, off to law school.
Brilliant!!!
"Your world frightens and confuses me"....Slogan for the year 2020.
LOL the kids brows has me rolling 3:13
Hartman’s gameshow host voice makes this one of the best SNL skits ever.
