      @Jocelyn theres only two ways you stall
      1.) releasing clutch too quickly
      2.) changing gears too quickly don’t do these you will never stall

      @Jocelyn Just dont be scared of pressing the gas :P
      Practice makes master. Learning manual is one thing, but learning the car you are to operate is something for itself. You will only learn and master it by driving it a lot. Just dont stress, take it easy and remember that stalling is OK. My car is terrible at reverse, sometimes i end up stalling it 2-3 times before i end my driving session :P (Some cars just don't have a lot of power to begin with.. Its a KIA Rio 2014 LX 4DR Hatchback, works brilliantly when going forward, if reversing in any form of hill-like terrain. Its the easiest car to stall :') )
      If you feel that driving manual is a struggle, find a parking lot and just practice clutch control. Once you got the muscle memory, it will not fade for a good while :P (if even it will fade at all)

    @peteriskrumings8771 4 ปีที่แล้ว +103

    7:20 this is good rule for first 3 gears, as you go up in 4, 5 and 6, changing gears at 2k rpms could be too low unless you are driving a diesel truck that runs at very low rpms, but on cars as I have read from many sources and how it feels natural on my turbo diesel car, the switching point should be 2.4k - 2.6k rpms when you are moderately accelerating so that the higher gear will engage at least at 1.6-1.8k rpms where you begin to get the best pulling power and with 2k rpms you know you are cruising with the correct gear. If you switch gears at lower rpms, it feels like I am putting too much stress on the engine and gear box although it will still pull up just fine (try accelerating with bicycle from near stop on highest gears and you will feel the stress it puts on chain and gears.
    It is also the way the gear ratios are selected. For 6 speed gearbox, 6th speed is for 90+ km/h, 5th speed for 70+ km/h, 4th speed for 50+ km/h, 3rd speed for 30+ km/h, 2nd speed for 10+ km/h and 1st speed 0-10km/h and you will see that at those speeds it makes perfect match with 2k rpms.

    When to change gears depends a lot on whether you have a petrol engine or a diesel engine. Petrol engines have more power and torque on higher rpms, diesel engines are more happy on lower rpms. Also petrol engines are easier to stall as they have much lower torque at 1000-1500 rpm than diesel does, you should apply more gas when moving off in a petrol car.

    Driving manual is more than basics, that are - important. But, I'd like my instructor told me couple of things. For exp. 1. Never overtake in highest gear, or in gear without enough momentum, but in one gear lower. My first car was non-turbochared diesel, so it was difficulte to gain speed by itself, and almost no way - uphill. 2. You don't have to downshift 5th-4th-3rd-2nd.., every time. You can skip gears. Because there might be sudden dangerous situation in traffic, where you must to reduce speed significantlly or quickly, while driving in,let's say 5th gear (at70-80kmh). In that case goes: start braking-clutch down-neutral- increase braking-choose corect gear (perhaps 2nd at 20-30km/h, depending of speed)-brake off-clutch up. But keep on mind, at that point, tires are dissengaged from the engine, and they brake more roughly, so you can slow down or stop in time. Also, be aware of other vehicles behind. So, if anyone ever decides to practise this, please find the road with no traffic. Btw, if I start adding here examples why is this important to know and be able to use, this would become an essay ,not just a comment. 3. How to measure distance in seconds between car in front and you. This instructor does say that to beginners. And that's good. As many other things, I found that on TH-cam. One more thing, about up-shifting timing. If you don't hear any metal to metal sound in your gearbox, or the vehicle doesn't struggle to speed up afterwards. You did it right.

    Well I was learning on Fiesta from 1999 so anything digital didn't exist back then such as gear shift notification. Simple and best for me was to learn it listening to the engine. You could get some hint from the rev clock when to change the gear but that always depends on the car you're driving, some cars need their gear shift activated sooner some later, depends on the rev power, so the best way is by sound of the car.

    I think when to change gear also massivly depends on the engine. Theres a car we used to have in the family, Ford 1.8 TDCi and this engine is so well known for this- anything less than 1800rpm it has no power at all and just diesel knocks like crazy, this engine likes a good run between 2200-3400rpm ideally, and its just the odd quirk of this engine. But like I say it differs massively between engines- my grandads car 1.5 dci Clio happily pulls like a train from 1000rpm onwards. It happily pulls up a steep hill at 30mph fourth gear, about 1200rpm. If you wanted to accelerate faster just push foot down more and it just carries on pulling like a train right up. Our current car- 1.6 HDi ford cmax likes it anywhere between 1600-3000rpm
    Im currently 16, will be 17 soon so can start learning to drive, and honestly can't wait lol. Ive got autism, and anyone with autism or knows it willl know in some people you have one subject you know loads about and can talk forever- for me its cars. I'm in some of the forums to specific models and I am one of the members that offers the most help and advice, and i'm only 16 I don't even drive yet!
    I've been doing some mock theory tests online and passing them, and thats without even doing any revision into it yet lol
    I love watching your videos and find them very interesting and helpful!

    A few pointers. First of all, it's not bad to rev the engine higher. Of course this depends on the car you're driving. For example, in my car, I have to rev to around 3k rpm before upshifting. Other cars will have to rev higher or lower, and it all depends on gear ratios. Furthermore, your engine is made to rev to high rpm. That's why you have a redline. Of course this is bad for fuel economy, but it's not going to damage the engine. And secondly, downshifting whilst braking is also good for the car. By downshifting and using the engine braking, along with the brakes, it will not only increase the braking potential, but also reduces wear on the brakes. Although, if you don't rev match, it will increase wear on the clutch. I don't really agree with his arguments. It's better to shift slightly later, than earlier, lugging the engine. It's also good practice to downshift as you brake.

    A late gear change can help in situations with a steep uphill. Personally I like downshifting through gears (no need to downshift to 1st when the car is still moving) if I'm slowly coming to a stop because I like being in the right gear for the speed at all times in case I have to react to a hazard, also the transmission can help take some load off your brakes and it's just all around a smoother stop.

    • @des_AT
      @des_AT ปีที่แล้ว

      I have my test next week can you please explain to me how to downshift from 4th gear to 2nd when i have to turn into a corner/street. Do i have to brake first or after the gear change??

    • @Omarock
      @Omarock ปีที่แล้ว

      @@des_AT My advice is do whatever you're comfortable with for now. Focus on passing the test first, your driving will get smoother with experience.
      There's plenty of tutorials on youtube you can look it up later. In short, when you're in the right gear for the speed (with clutch fully disengaged) there's a thing called engine braking that keeps slowing the car down when your foot is off gas, using this along with brakes helps to get a smoother stop and all around better control of the car. That's why it's always advised to brake first and then clutch all the way down when you're nearly about to stop. If you use the clutch early you're disengaging the transmission thus you lose engine braking and have less control on the car (called coasting). Good luck on your test!

    the best way to get from gear 2 into gear 3 is just touch the stick so it goes into neutral and then push it up forward into gear 3. Same with gear 4 except you're pushing down instead of up.

    I've learned to change from 3 to 2 (1) when possible in order to use the 'natural' motor brake and not overuse the brake.

    • @edwardtye4119
      @edwardtye4119 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is an older method of teaching how to slow down from when cars had worse brakes. The newer way of doing it is to use the breaks more, as they are better now than they were before and it is cheaper and easier to replace worn out brakes than a worn out gearbox.
