    Loving starting with orange tone (or yellow sometimes ) since I saw your acrylic painting demo for the first time. IT REALLY WORKS!! Thanks for the great tip!!

    Malcolm, I took an online course last summer on gouache mastery. However, toning the paper was not part of the course. I'm definitely going to give it a try, so thanks for this tip. Every teacher has something unique to offer, I have found. I love painting with gouache, by the way, as well as acrylics.

    thanks so much !! I've been playing around with toning the paper , before painting , and I love it !! it adds a layer of visual interest that does seem to make the painting " sing" ( sometimes!! lol) I also agree about the Jeece Finest paints.. they have been wonderful to work with! thanks again.. It's really interesting to see a side by side demo like this !! NORAKAG , here 👍👍

      Malcolm Dewey I also paint a lot on toned paper( mixed media / Strathmore).. the paper is strong enough for the gouache, as long as you don't use too many watery layers... lots of fun !!

    Thank you for such a detailed demonstration. Seeing your gouache videos had inspired me to pull out my gouache paints that have been sitting in a drawer for over 3 years. I wasn’t quite sure how to use them. It was very helpful to see the side by side demonstration of the toned vs plain background. You make it look so easy! If only it were!

    Your series on gouache is so great, and this comparative demonstration is so clear and pedagogical. Many thanks! Looking forward to more on this series 😀👏🏻

      @@MalcolmDewey That’s great to hear! I am new to this and have been going through your courses on Skillshare and classes on TH-cam and have found them incredibly useful, I'm really enjoying painting with watercolors and pastels!. I’ve found the gouache series particularly revealing, it really surprised me. I had no idea what gouache was all about and it seems the perfect no-fuss (and affordable) way to start with an opaque medium.

      @MalcolmDewey  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ceciliamateu Agreed - it is a friendly medium.

    Wonderful idea to show us watercolorists the uderpainting and opaque approach. Your videos are keeping me practicing and heading outside. And that’s the point. On future videos can you make some reference to which layers have dried completely before the next. As you know with wc if you come back in too soon, a mess. I keep trying to tell.

    Is it possible to do wet-in-wet for gouache? What about sprinkle salt or other texture effect for watercolor, can they be used for gouache too?

    • @MalcolmDewey
      @MalcolmDewey  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes to wet in wet for gouache. Not sure about those other techniques though.

    I recently bought the himi gouache set, unfortunately saw your video after that otherwise I would have bought the jeece gouache, I'm looking for a sketch type thing for the gouache painting in an A4 size that, dare I say, is affordable. Any recommendations?

    • @MalcolmDewey
      @MalcolmDewey  ปีที่แล้ว

      Jeece is popular and sells out quick. But I also like winsor & newton designer gouache. Paper, I go for Fabriano cold press 140lbs in whatever format is on special 😊 They have so many books etc

    I was laughing to myself about this. I'm in awe of the skill of someone who can do two paintings at once. Meanwhile I'm splattering paint around paper and crying! LOL

    What drives me crazy with gouache are consistency and reactivation. Maybe wAtercolor and acrylics are easier
