Just found this channel, but it appears that it is no longer active. So sad. Really good video content. I love to see it when the results of grant money, turns out so much better than expected.
Love how well this story captures many links of an ecological chain: island foxes, bald eagles, fish, the malaria parasite, mosquitos, humans, golden eagles, and pigs. Great illustration of how a single change can reverberate throughout an ecological network.
My son did archeological work on the Channel Islands in the 80's and I saw pictures of these foxes. It's so uplifting to know all this work has been done to preserve their existence. Makes me wish I could "come back" as a Wildlife Biologist!
All I can picture is the helicopters chasing eagles till exhaustion and the bird was probably thinking " if I'm going out your coming with me" then runs into the blades
Am so sad to see this chanel is not active anymore such intersting and well produced pieces! Glad I found them anyway Also I want to cuddle one of these gorgeous foxes!❤️
I can't imagine any intelligent reason why they needed hunters from New Zealand to clear the island of pigs when the US has so many people who would practically do it for free.
I believe they actually did have hunters making trips to the islands for a while - but apparently it wasn't enough to keep up with the pigs. I suspect the terrain played a role - this is a large, very hilly island with lots of hiding places. There were pigs hiding in sea caves. SEA CAVES!! So they needed a pretty sophisticated operation. They wanted to be sure to eliminate every single individual, do it humanely, with minimal additional impact on the environment - thus they brought in experts from an island country very familiar with extirpating invasive species.
@@tuberaider I did some sleuthing for you and you can buy/find it here www.casa-musica-shop.de/artist.aspx?name=Stephen+Lang It is ballroom music apparently. I hope it helped you a bit further. Great song indeed.
hunters from New Zealand hunt pigs (is this something America hunters do?) sometimes people from other countries are experts in something even though Americans like to think they're the best at everything. and how do you know that these New Zealand hunters didn't do this for free?
New Zealand was dedicated for decades in restoring the natural fauna. Since all mammals excluding bats are non-native, they have a lot of experience in removing those. Usually they start with small offshore islands, which will be cleaned from all mammals (rats, mice, feral farm animals, Wallaby etc.) and invasive reptiles etc. Afterwards they reintroduce the native (bird) fauna. They are doing an excellent job, and brought back a lot of species from the brink of extinction, such as the Kakapo and Kiwi. This expertice is in high demand around the wourld and they helped in many other threatened island habitats, such as Mauritius, to get rid of invasive mammals and restore the native, endemic fauna. So yes, they are the leading experts! And the job goes way beyond hunting down a single deer or a rabit. US local hunters don't have the persistence and experience for this job.
@@Liaswildlife - though and comprehensive response, thank you - one slight note - not only New Zealand "was" - still *IS* dedicated to restoring natural fauna (and flora) from introduced pests

Not really. The channel islands, and Santa Cruz specifically, make a significant amount of money due to eco tourism. It's so desirable, people have to sign up in advance to pay quite a bit of money, just to visit the islands and the waters around them. There are so many government and private organizations that use the channel islands for everything from national defense( Training and test grounds as well as advanced radar, GPS, and other military monitoring systems to safe guard the West Coast of the United States), to weather monitoring( Everything from monitoring storms, to seismic activity, as well as early tsunami warning systems), To Eco tourism( Which brings in millions of dollars a year just from the the money taken in for tickets by the US parks system). Oh, There is also a college there that rakes in significant amounts of money as well, all taxed by the US government. Not to mention, the scientific knowledge that is gained, as well as restoring the habitat the humans totally messed up to begin with. So actually, it is an asset, not a dependency.
I’m so sad that this channel didn’t become popular. So informational and never boring..
