San Francisco zoo lion feeding

  • The closest you can get to a lion being fed, without actually being the meal. The Canon T4I autofocus is terrible, the rolling shutter wobbles, & instead of dropping frames when the class 10 SD card overflows, it stops recording.
    Extra bars were added in 2007, after a zoo keeper got eaten, so it's no longer as close as the original 1930 experience & the meat has to be in smaller pieces. Hard to believe there was no other way to protect the humans without covering more of the lions.
    Videos from before 2007 show the original 1930's bars. In the old days, they must have relied on having your head on a swivel & staying away from the bars, while the current time emphasizes making things idiot proof.

      if it makes you feel better, a lot of times the tigers and lions just walk away into a little door that leads back to the habitat when they aren't into seeing the humans lol.

    My Great Uncle Jack Castor cared for the lions at the S.F. Zoo for 48 years. He was gentle, kind and caring towards everyone of the Big Cats he cared for. He in no way jailed these magnificent creatures. Many of them he raised by hand. He took them home as cubs when their mothers rejected them. He saw to their health and care. Many of them lived a much better and longer life under his care than they would have had in the wild. I had the privilege of going to see him whenever I was in town from the time I was a little girl through the joy of introducing my children to Jack and the Big Cats. I and they learned respect for these creatures, because he respected and loved them deeply. From the way the Big Cats responded to Jack, I am sure the feeling was mutual.

      As Jack fed the big cats I asked him if he could get indide the lions compartment and he said..no..that they were wild and will always be...from the inside of the cage,the huge cats would lean theis backs against the metal bars and Jack carefully and a for a few seconds scratch them..what a sight!!

      _Ra ____Valid point, but these captive bred lions don't know any better....It's for many tempting to condemn those zoos, but for children these are adventures they will never forget....Thankfully most zoos have more natural enclosures these days, those cages are only for night time...

    Does anyone know of any footage or even audio of the lion and tiger feedings when they would actually throw chunks of meat into these enclosures for feeding time? I don't remember how old I was(maybe around 2003?) but I remember the roars and sounds they made when eating, and to this day those are the most powerful sounds I have ever heard. When they feed them that way yes it was cruel and whenever I remember the sounds I always feel saddened, but I can't and will never forget those sounds.

    Bring back the old system when a lion was given a substantial amount of meat to chew and gnaw on-with visitors observing in respectful silence.
    This looks and feels like a hungry lion “performing” for dinner, going from cage to cage, just so the loud, obnoxious crowd can gape at this majestic animal.

    • @cantpopdismolly

      My guess is that people don’t realize that the Lion House was built in the 1930’s and zoos back then were more for entertainment purposes, compared to today where the focus is on conservation instead. What isn’t mentioned (but IS in the description) is that the lion house’s purpose now is just used for feeding the big cats.
      I live an hour away from the zoo (in San Jose), and I used to come here A LOT growing up. So I picked it up on one of the many trips (and field trips) I took here as a kid.

    Just saying for everyone out there. They only put them in that cage SOMETIMES. They actually have a normal sized enclosure, and put them in here for feedings. This isn't their primary enclosure.

    • @xMurqzHD
      @xMurqzHD 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No such thing as a 'normal sized enclosure'

    • @korinoriz
      @korinoriz 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +xMurqzHD Well it's bigger than this. Trust me, I love animals to be free just as much as the next person, but it's not THAT bad. Considering the fact most of the animals, in this zoo in particular, were born in zoos. So, they're used to people/don't really know the outside world. Also, it's a "small" enclosure or getting shot in the wild.

    • @xMurqzHD
      @xMurqzHD 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All enclosures are just massive prisons. They say they are trying to save the animals and all but really they're not saving anything. None of these lions would survive in the wild that why you rarely hear about zoo born animals that have been released in the wild. Yes they get fed every day and cleaned etc.. But that's not how a lion, the King of kings, was meant to be raised. That's not what they were put on this earth for. It's sad

    • @xMurqzHD
      @xMurqzHD 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it's their turn for extinction then so be it, that's how it's supposed to be. It's all gonna happen one day, judgement day.

    • @korinoriz
      @korinoriz 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +xMurqzHD I think you just contradicted yourself, because it's mostly humans that kill these animals. Also, obviously they won't release animals born in zoos in the wild, but some can. I've volunteered at the SF zoo many times, and they are do everything they can to help animals and educate people. Some species persevered by zoos have actually been reintroduced and have shown success.

    Those poor bastards must be traumatized by this, i understand that zoos and sanctuaries are an important part of conservation... but having them confronted with so many and noisy people must be extremely stressful for them. If they're scared they've got nowhere to hide and feel safe. Surely this zoo could charge people a fairly large sum of money to people to feed the cats one on one as that way the people who feed them are likely to be much more thoughtful of the animals. This method is awful to see.

    This is cruel and just awful. If I was a lion I would rather take my chances in the wild or just die. If you want to see a lion in captivity that has a good life go check out Kevin Richardson (the "lion whisperer")lions. Now he gives a lion a good home and feeds them very well. And gives them love and attention. Go check them out on TH-cam it is great!!! Another zoo I watched on TH-cam said they don't feed their lions for a week each month because it helps their metabolism yeah right! do they think were stupid ! they just want to keep down their food bill. Then after the guy said that he gave this huge male lion a piece of meat the size of a small pot roast. And said that's all they need. I am not an expert on lions but even I know that was not enough. This is just very sad to see the animals treated like this.
