This movie always makes me cry! I’m not Welsh, but this movie speaks to all of us who come from working-class/ labor backgrounds. Worked so hard, never lost their faith, loved their family… so much sacrifice to earn a living in horrible working conditions. God Bless Them! So much is still true today.
Lazlos, I agree that ultimately it's a joyful film, but it's a hard earned joy - one must live through the tragedies & sadness that Ford so masterfully presents us. That takes time, and probably repeated viewings. I watched it with my then teenage (& quite macho) son a few years back - he wept unabashedly at the conclusion. I hope in years to come he will watch again and feel the glory as well.
@@dmande3 I always weep uncontrollably at the end and in other places, (the music is especially powerful to me). But one can experience both joy and sadness-they are not mutually exclusive. In fact, much of the 'sadness' of the film is not from sadness at all or tragic events but from the overwhelming beauty in life. The n ovel expresses this even more so
What a powerful movie. And how John Ford got such a strong performance from young Roddy McDowell. He deserved the award for Best Actor for 1941 but he was so young.
Richard Llewellyn wrote the book first pf course, but John Ford did well. Being half Welsh and Half Irish myself I was disappointed with some of the American actors accents.. The Mother for instance .. didn;t sound like she was acting with anhyattempt at a Welsh accent nor the Father. al the same one of my all time favourite films. During Victorian times one of my Mothers Welsh Gt Uncles was in a Welsh Male voice choir and they actually were commanded by Queen Victoria to perform for her at the Royal Command performance in the choir. I saw the press cutting about it when I was little in the 1960s.. still framed and in pride of place in his Granddaughters kitchen. on the wall. Whenever I watched this film with my Mother she would say.. just like my uncle.. the Royal Command Performance.
One of my top ten favorite movies of all times!! John Ford was a master and the cast were superb especially Roddy McDowell he should have won some kind of youth oscar for his performance in How Green Was My Valley.
I love this movie. Once in high school I had to do an essay on a speech. I did it on the speech Mr. Gruffydd gives instead of a final sermon when he leaves the valley. Powerful words.
One of Hollywood's TRUE gems- and sadly not well known to most viewers. But remember it beat out Citizen Kane and the Maltese Falcon for best picture- so that's saying something .I've memorized those ending words, and I can't even write those ending words without tearing up. I recite them about my late father on the anniversary of his passing. I hope my daughter will think of me the same way. A 5 hankee flick for sure. If you don't cry at that ending you're heartless and without a soul.
I agree with others that this is the Hollywood version of mining life...however the film makers had to fight tooth and nail to just get this much depicted...and I don't think it would made it today! No , we need another cartoon hero movie
One thing that is genuinely excellent about this film however is the music. All of that Welsh hymn singing is truly beautiful and has gotten me into a genuine side of culture I wouldn't have found otherwise.
A classic film.....Yes, but for me, what created a riff in a tight family was a Union issue....a issue that would cost the lives of two members of the family.....

Men like my father can not die, they are with me still real in memory as they were in flesh, loving and beloved forever, how green was my Valley then.
Surprised that so many think this a "sad" movie. It is "life," filled with joy, tragedy, love and music. Sad, and glorious.

I can only add one thing. Read the book. It's my favorite book of all. It stays with you, in your heart.
@@bcd4562 You're quite right. The book is even better than the film. A masterpiece of writing. It's like reading poetry in prose form.
@LaslosPlane 💯
Every time I see this I am flooded with memories of my own father.
What a powerful movie. And how John Ford got such a strong performance from young Roddy McDowell. He deserved the award for Best Actor for 1941 but he was so young.
I burst into tears when I first saw this ending.
Other places too, still to this day, though not so many as years before. More like sad/happy tears now.
I still do now.
When Huw and his father look down and see his older brothers approaching, it gets me every time. John Ford…what a storyteller!
Is this ending a representation of the father arriving in heaven? or another moment spent before his death?

They don’t make them like this anymore! RIP Roddy McDowell.
An ending never to be forgotten!

Can you believe someone had this movie in a list of most nonworthy oscar winners!! I say it's one of the best of the best. John Ford's favorite.
First time I watched this scene since my father passed earlier this year. As I anticipated: sobbing.
Not a movie. A film. A masterpiece. The greatest movie of all time.

what did the teacher think of it?
Superb.............Not a dry eye in the house!!!!!!!!

Full movie is on TH-cam. We watched 15 min every day before go to bed. You should show your kids all good movie.
And a wonderful book, heartbreaking and human.

You'd think with how many of them are socialists they would love to depict the suffering of the working class in all of its morbid detail.

I quite agree. From the start one thrills to it.
Based on the village of Gilfach Goch on the edge of the Rhondda valley in South Wales
Obra maestra absoluta total genial e inimitable,,,,
My favorite movie.
The most sad movie of all the time
How Green was my valley then..
Great movie
OMG! 😢
An absolutely superb production. Shame the Welsh accents weren’t authentic. 🏴
How saddd!!!

what was the other character that died during the movie?
balisimo
recomendo
If there ever was a movie that requires colorization, this is one of them.
I'm not sure about that John. To me, black and white shows better the stark reality of their lives - just my opinion. Cheers.
i'm here because of lana del rey
Wait…as a fan of this book and LDR I need to know what this correlation is you speak of.
