Top 10 Win Conditions of Control Decks in MTG

  • Control has been an archetype in Magic the Gathering for as long as the game has existed. These slower decks aim to clear the board and counter the opponent’s plays as they grind out a win. As such, control more than most strategies tends to rely on specific singular cards to actually close out a game. In the earliest days of Magic this meant an aggressive high end creature like Serra Angel, although over the years what makes a powerful control win condition has shifted as new, more powerful cards come out.

    Just a big note, Atraxa has at least one tornament top 8 in literally every sanctioned format she is legal in, often 5-15 of them. She's long past "experimentation" and has been competing with Grislbrand for "Best thimg to cheat into play"

      This is a control win condition tier list. How many of those are in control decks? Reanimator/Sneqk&Show/NaturalOrder don't count for this list.

      @@gabrote42 Consider that they generally will have a partial control plan after getting her into play, it's reasonable to say they count for the list.
      It's much like trying to discredit Teferi Hero of Dominaria's ultimate, as it was primarily reached in "Turbo Fog Nexus", which many could control a combo deck.

      @@superbaas8822I'd have to agree with you on non-control decks becoming psuedo-control as needed with the right cards. I've got 5C homebrew for Modern that is essentially a tempo combo creature deck that can shift to a more control oriented role as needed. Those types of cards are typically the ones like Atraxa that have solid stats and abilities for combat, while also having another ability that can be abused.

    The other really important thing about Shark Typhoon cycling is that it *isn't a spell*. This means in control mirrors your opponent cannot counter it; if that's the only form of interaction they have left, it can win the game purely due to this. This is most of how it's used in older formats; the combination of X-cost and instant speed produces ridiculous versatility and the drawn card means it's hard to answer without giving up a two for one.

      This is the way it is mostly used also, you have to be really crushing in a game with no real pressure to be able to tap out for shark typhoon hard cast with a grip that you can use to immediately start making tokens. Rate +2 for a scaling instant speed flier that draws a card is what makes typhoon great

    You made the point that Narset doesn’t close out the game by herself, but the same can apply to Teferi.
    Yes getting a wheel effect with narset is back breaking, and ultimate Teferi is really good, I thought about “Win Conditions” as cards that either bring your opponent’s life total to 0 or milling them out. At least Jace could mill them out with his ultimate.

    • @hagenlala6409
      @hagenlala6409 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      You are incorrect. Hero Teferi does win by himself. He exiles all opponent permanents and then sets up a lock where your deck only consists of 1 (or 3) Teferi .You draw your Teferi every turn, exiling one thing the opponent played (first landdrop presumably), cast him and then have him tuck himself back into the deck. The win condition is natural deckout of the opponent. If you have 3 Teferis you can even exile 2 things every turn. That's a bit more involved.

    Shark Typhoon is most certainly not played because you can wait to cast it lol. It's 99% of the time just cycled, even when you're trying to kill with it. It's good because it scales with your mana, cycling for 2, being a mid-sized blocker for a medium cost, or being a big beater when you have a lot of mana.
    Hard casting it comes up, but rarely, and it's a bit of a meme.

    • @Xoulrath_
      @Xoulrath_ 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Literally the best part of Typhoon is its flexibility.
      Need to draw a card? Pay 1U, dump the Shark to the yard, and grab a card.
      Need a chump blocker? For a measly additional one mana, you get to draw the card while getting a 1/1 that even blocks flying. Short of Trample or Shadow, the token soaks the damage so that you don't have to.
      Gaining control of the game and need to start looking for a win con? Make an army of sharks while digging deeper into your deck for control cards.
      It never getting stuck in your hand and being useless is exactly why it can be such a great control finisher. Being able to run a playset means that you've got more access to it, and can close out games faster once you've taken control. It's easily one of my favorite options for a control win con.

    Why do you need to equip Kaldra Compleat to anything? Yeah, it comes in with a germ token, that just means it's "only" a 5/5 indestructible first strike lifelink trampler with haste and what we shall lovingly refer to as "exiletouch"
    Even if 5/5 was a bad statline (it's not) the fact that it's indestructible renders the base toughness superfluous and the fact that it exiles anything it touches renders the power superfluous.

    I dislike control so much. Nothing is more annoying than thinking you sat down to play Magic the Gathering and find out you're playing 'Ha ha you can't do anything' the Gathering instead. I remember one of the few tournaments I played one round I was against a control deck. The first 3 spells I played he countered. I wouldn't think Infiltrator's Lens, Ichor Wellspring, or Lead Myr were prime targets for counter spells. I ended up scooping the round, not going to waste any time on sitting there not doing anything for 40 minutes. It was the only round I lost.
