Talk about gutsy - Allen was 44th out of 51 at the end of the swim leg, 28th at the end of the bike leg, and mowed everyone down in the run.
I remember watching this live as it happened. Amazing race by Kate!

Yes! I remebered a triahtlon with a female runner coming out of nothing. Realized it was Athene 2004. Watched it again and Kate was almost 3 minutes behind at transistion cycle-run!

The gold should have went to Australia instead of Austria?
Australia dropped Allen from the team. She was accepted by the Austrian team. I remember watching on TV as she got into second place, but the Australian commentators missed it and did not realise she was closing down on the Australian.

@@danstewart9362 No, Allen was never on the Australian team - she only started triathlon while she was backpacking in Europe, with her Austrian boyfriend (who became her husband). He was a junior triathlon Austrian champion and got her started.
