Excellent design. I've been using mine for six years. I made a few mods. Add a maxi fender washer under each bolt head and each nut, and you will eliminate wracking for all practical purposes while making folding/unfolding go more smoothly. Additionally, I suggest staggering the 1x rails so that the two horses nest snugly against each other when folded. They take up a little less space that way. Do that by mounting the single rail high enough that it just slips past the top edge of the lower one on the double-rail side. They'll mate, single to double rail that way and stand neatly together. Oh, and I got bungee bands long enough that I could just pull them tightly around the lower rails and hook them to each other. I can lift the whole assembly by the top cross bar. Works a treat.
I've watched several of these videos on this design. All seem to overcomplicate it. You did a very nice job not overdoing it. You gave just the right amount of info to get it done. Fine job and thank you sir.

I built my horses today from scap 2x4s I got out of the dumpster at the recycle center (with permission, of course). I spent just under $10 on the bolts, washers and wingnuts. Took me about 2 hours, with breaks (hot day) to build them. I am VERY happy with how they turned out! Not a bad diy for a girl ;) Thanks very much for the detailed info on how to mark the notch with the speed square.
I remember building these for $12 a pair, $20 in this video .. today it's $30 a pair buying everything... Less if you already have half the stuff... Wood price just keep going up and up... Lol I like these sawhorse, bought the plan for $5.
One suggestion: Use 2x6 instead of 2x4 for the top rails. Give you a little more height above the side supports and helps in case of the occasional slight rail cut through notching we all do sometimes.
Your the "Man with the Plan" Great Video. Your process is much easier than the other plans I purchased on the internet. When I completed the horses they would wobble because something was off center somehow. It was always like that no matter how careful I cut the pieces and drilled the holes. Going to construct a pair using your Technique.
Very nice man. Very nice. 99% great. 1% improvement? Yes, write down measurements on captions. If there is natural background noise, no need for added music. A little lower speed on your explanations without adding length to the video. Just 1% improvement. Instead of a bungee cord you should add a fold down shelf. That would add more rigidity and someplace to lay whatever on them during a project like your saw, tools, wood or supplies etc. !
How would this work? The bungee cord pulls the opposing legs together which tightens the grip on 2x4 wedged up top. A shelf would push the legs apart, loosening the grip on the 2x4. Did I miss something?

cool video i've been using one of these as a folding workbench for two years now, 2 tips - 1. you forgot to put washers between the the legs, it makes the whole thing fold alot smoother. 2. i use an old denim belt to tighten it together, its free/cheap and its not elastic so it holds it even sturdier (i used to have a vise mounted on it for hand sawing). great job dude i bet you'll get alot of use out of them.
Hey dor Shem-tov,...I used some retaining straps from "Harbor Freight" I don't know exactly what there called, but they are "Yellow" You run the strap through a Spring Loaded buckle with serrated teeth and it tightens down on the strap as you pull it tight.

Design looks functional and construction looks straight forward. Because you wear Gloves around a rotating blade, anything can go wrong. Once that blade connects with a piece of your glove your luck will come into play for keeping your fingers. Loose articles of clothing and gloves have no place around table saws and chop saws or drills. Remember as you ask others to view more of your videos you must also teach a little safety. Many New comers to wood working have little experience utilizing hand tools let alone power tools.

I would add drill presses and vertical mills to the “no gloves” list. You can use a shop brush to keep the work area clean. A brush is easily replaced, fingers are not!
A great job, but a lot of time involved and money. Black Friday I saw an ad for Ace and there were selling sawhorses (Stanley) for $8. Now they are black plastic and each has a hinged shelf which holds tools and dirt and keeps the legs open. There is a notch in the plastic which will hold a 1 1/2 inch piece of wood. 2 5 foot 2x4s and 2 3foot 2x4 made a nice frame for a 36 x74 inch door, all scrap which was paid for by someone else, including the door the customer didn't want. A piece of OSB made a cheap top which came from a roofing job. I take the top off the horses and lay it flat in truck and plastic horses on top along with other tools for the job. Unload the truck, set up the horses and a bench with which to work without having to work on the ground. Someone said it was not very strong so 5 old fat me climbed a step stool and stood on the horse. Damn cheap Stanley tools/
I know it is fun to spend money and build something, but when being paid by the hour and furnishing tools it is best to save money that can be spent for something else.
Like it! Nice demo of the speed square too for some reason another reminder to use that engraving still helps me - you've got it wired.. It would be interesting to see a failure test to see what element fails if say two sawhorses were loaded with sandbags until they collapsed.. I would guess perhaps the first thing would be the pivot bolt would split the wood? Would take a lot though; guessing it would be quite a scary amount of weight to get that to fail.. I'm thinking of copying yours but want to try using a wedged through-mortise and tenon like Szilard Pinter has demonstrated in his video about his mirror frame instead of the four screws on each stretcher. That way the entire assembly would knock down and take the least possible amount of space to store.
On the sets I have built, I put similar notched legs on the inside set. Then I can put a 2x4 spacer between the inner set of legs. It makes the horses a bit more compact for storage.
people complaining about the music but the real killer is the blinking. I've had this happen to my edits though, it's a pain in the ass to render and then realize that happened. good vid though.

Tim Marshall He did not come up with this design that's been around longer than my Grandfather whose been dead for 40 years. If anything, the shopdog is a knock off from a sawbuck. Video was decently done, I appreciate the work! My backyard is quite noisy as well ;)

You show 9 pieces of wood @0.50 but you only used 8. Four of them were for the legs, 3 for the horizontal support and 1 for the top. What happened to the 9th one

Nice paved area for working. Might not be even enough for some projects but at least you don't need to worry about sawdust gathering up!

True and hands should be atleast 6-8 inches from the cut line.

If you notch the 2×4's to accept the 1x4's and use a little glue it will drastically reduce the racking.
Perhaps a diagonal brace on each side of each saw horse in opposing directions will strengthen them up :)

G'day from Australia, just checking your 2"x4" are actually 2x4s? In Oz the actual size (dar) is 1.5"x3.5" unless I try to mill it myself.

why do you cut the 1x4 different lengths?
Very similar to those by Shopdog except that his are even more stable as legs slope in both directions

If you had even a 1/4" shoulder (rebate)on the 1x6 you would have zero side to side play . Think traditional joinery 👍
