You mentioned being worried about the video flopping because people wouldn't care about Cursed, but, honestly, one of my favorite things is when a TH-camr I like releases a video about some random movie or TV show or whichever that I've never heard of or barely remember and it's like 2 hours long and I get to be like, "Well, time to see what kind of nonsense rabbit hole they fell down this time."
I know we're drowning in remakes nowadays but honestly, I feel like a remake of this movie that follows the original script (with some changes) would be really good or at least interesting to see.
I totally agree!! they could even use the premise of the final film but script doctor it/build on it- because I honestly kinda like the concept of siblings who become werewolves lol, they just didn't do anything interesting with it. but either way, yeah remakes of unsuccessful movies make so much more sense than remakes of already popular movies
Del Toro famously said filming Mimic with Weinstein brothers was worse than going through his father getting kidnapped for ransom because: 'at least he knew what kidnappers wanted from him.' This experience was so bad he decided to give up filming in Hollywood for few years and only do films outside of studio system.
Things I remember from this film: -being amazed at how incompetent this looked for a Craven film -the Bo subplot was kind of sweet and I was glad that he didn’t die, which felt revolutionary for 2005 -Joshua Jackson was effective when he finally went heel -I wondered what Judy Greer had possibly done to deserve this
that one shot of jimmy and brooke kissing with bo in the background looking awkward is killing me its so fucking funny. epitome of being the third wheel
jane I just want you to know that the first thing I did when I finished your video was looking up bo/jimmy on ao3. I plan to read them all. thank you for this.
Kilbourne also hosted the first version of The Daily Show on Comedy Central back when it was pretty mean-spirited and no where near as good as when Jon Stewart took over. Stewart only got the gig because Kilbourne got the Late Late Show and Stewart's previously syndicated late night talk show had been cancelled.
There's a reason they used to call him Harvey Scissorhands. What an incredibly despicable human being that he had to one-up himself from destroying films to destroying lives.
The only thing that stood out for me when I watched Cursed back in 2005 was the part where they make it clear that Craig Kilborn gets infected with the werewolf curse and then never bring it up again. There's just a werewolf Craig Kilborn running around offscreen and it doesn't come up. More people knew about Kilborn back then because he was the original host of The Daily Show, but then nobody watched him on The Late Show, so he was already the Scott Baio of the talk show scene by the time the movie came out. Probably by the time it went into production.
honestly tinsel seems like jake just wanted to include all his special interests in the club instead of sticking with one theme and i can’t say i wouldn’t do the same if given the opportunity

I actually saw this movie in theaters with my then girlfriend. It was definitely a teen crowd because everyone was yelling at the screen and cracking jokes. Yean it was terrible, but the audience was fun
I miss these kinds of theater experiences. Everyone’s on the same page that we’re here to trash the movie (as designed) and have a good time. Last time I did this was for M3GAN.
I once described this movie as feeling like a Disney Channel original movie. So tame and cliche and clunky, but not without some surface level charm. Great deep dive.
Started this video thinking "oh, fun, a 2000s horror movie I never saw" until halfway through I realized I have seen it and that porch scene was just one of the only things I could remember...
See my husband and I love this movie and have watched it every year during October and the plot is so wild that we never remember it and are always shocked, surprised and laughing at everything like it’s the first watch.
Rick Baker was very much screwed over on this movie because he was originally going to go and make a practical effects werewolf and then his design didn't get used, Rick's makeup work never gets enough credit in my opinion, the guy is one of my heroes next to the late Stan Winston.
Growing up a horror obsessed teen in the early 2000s I was particularly intrigued by the news of an upcoming Black Christmas remake. I read every message board, read every Fangoria article, and even subscribed to the official fan page . The creator of the website named Dan even visited the set of the remake production and got Andrea Martin (who was in the OG and in the remake as the Mrs Mac) to sit down with him in an empty part of the set and watch the OG on a portable DVD player. I say all this to tell of another anecdote that happened on the remakes set. Weinsten himself reportdley barged on to the set and demanded reshoots, more blood, and for whatever reason that one cookie scene. Morgan and Wong really set out to make a remake more in vein of the original. More atmosphere and dread than what was actually released. It's so infuriating to know just how many horror productions were torn to shreads by these creep studio heads
I think he says "are you going fruit fly on me" directed at Brooke, which I assumed means "are you into gay guys now?" because she's with Jimmy, but I agree it's still pretty nonsensical. I have to admit tho he kind of ate him up with "so you're just an ass wimp wad for no reason?"
You know what, I do think being an awkward third wheel to Jesse Eisenberg and your beard girlfriend is still a better romantic situation than ending up with Rory for Jesse from Gilmore Girls.
Another fun fact is that Heather Lagenkemp was in the movie, too, alongside the cop from Nightmare on Elm Street, too. This would've been an end game of the Craven universe.
i giggle and kick my feet every time jane uploads a long ass video about some shit i've never heard of and at the end i will most likely have a very strong opinion about. i've never seen teen wolf or degrassi but at this point it doesn't even feel like i need to
I was 14 in '04, and I distinctly remember the cinéplex I would frequent having posters for 'Cursed' and, you'll love this, 'Veer-Zaara' hanging up side by side. Growing up in Dubai was...somethin'!
I’m 10 years older than you and I also thought that Craig Kilborn was also hosting a fictional late night show until now 😂 also the picture of Planet Hollywood is of what Planet Hollywood looked like after it went from dining to hospitality. Like Planet Hollywood, Tinsel a Hollywood themed dining experience in Hollywood is redundant, no matter how cool the name is.
Great video as usual, Jane! Re: your mention at 1:10:11 of the botched Miramax cut of Farewell My Concubine - I was lucky enough to see the 30th anniversary restored original version in a theater last year and it was stunning. Hands down one of the most gorgeous movies I've ever seen. I can't imagine how any of it could have been cut; every shot of every scene felt absolutely essential. Thankfully it looks like the restored version is now streaming on Criterion - I highly recommend it!
I'm glad you made such a long video on Cursed as it gives me another way to view Cristina Ricci's beautifully awful eyebrows for over an hour, they are so captivating!
speaking of werewolves, if there's a next part of 'bad movies starting degrassi actors' I hope the howling reborn is included bc that movie was a wild ride
that one's on my list for whenever I make the next installment! (I kind of just assume bad movies starring degrassi actors will be a neverending series)
finally finished this video and god i can only hope this truly does spark the release of the craven cut. also jimmy, bo, and brooke shouldve become a throuple i will hold this opinion forever
I actually went to the drive in movie to see this. It was the headline feature of the night, that is to say another movie proceeded it and Cursed was considered the main feature of the night. I distinctly remember a lot of cars leavings the movie lot when it started/early on in the movie. I liked it then, but then again I was 14 with terrible taste. I need to rewatch it.
Jane, it is always the highlight of my week when you upload! No matter the topic, video length, etc I eat it right up ❤ I originally found you from your first Degrassi video and have been blessed ever since. #releasethecravencut
Thank you so much for making a video about Cursed in 2024. While the movie is a mess, it is something so entertaining about the final product, maybe the overall bad script writing and editing 😭😭. Definitely a movie that NEEDS its original version released.
Above and beyond this being a great video, huge respect for thoroughly recognizing and crediting all the writers, channels, and podcasts that helped you complete this commentary. WAY too many creators don't do this.
Honestly I've been trying to be more explicit with that since all of the recent attention towards plagiarism on youtube. I've always written my own scripts [cue applause for bare minimum], but I think earlier in my time making videos I did sometimes have that mindset of 'it's just a youtube video, I don't need to be as thorough in citing research as I would be in academic writing' but now I think maybe I do! Or should!
I've never heard of this film, but the thumbnail with Christina Ricci and Amy Lee caught my attention. 🤩 btw, imagine having Milo Ventimiglia saying he wants you at your doorstep. major fanfic plot being written in my mind right now, thank you sm
I rented this from blockbuster when I was a kid, and I always remembered it for how graphic it was. But when I looked it up online years later, all the gory parts I remembered weren’t there. Apparently that’s because the Canadian version was the unrated cut 😂.
Jane. I love your videos. I love your content. This Cursed (2005) video has unlocked a memory from my childhood when I watched it as a little kid and then had a nightmare that werewolf Judy Greer was gonna come for me and had to sleep in my older sister’s room. So yeah, that was fun. Anyway, I think you should make a video about the Nancy Drew-esque teen whodunit movie, Minor Details (2009). If you haven’t seen it already, I think it would be right up your alley. You don’t even have to make a video on it, I just feel like we have similar tastes and you would be able to appreciate it for its so very 2009 quality. Anyway, hope you have a nice day 😊 keep up the good work
So, I remember watching this movie as a closeted gay teenager. My brother had rented it. And when I heard that line about the best part of being a fairy is you get to fly. A small part of me really smiled at that line. I liked it. But yes, the movie was kind of a mess. Lol.
perfect video!!!! i honestly can't believe i'd never seen or heard of cursed before, it's everything i love lol. every aspect was a delight 😌 and insane
Highly recommend The Double as your next random Jesse Eisenberg movie. ✨ (This video was excellent, I really appreciated how you acknowledged and talked about all of your sources at the end, I wish more video essayists would do that.)
Happy to mention I also had a Bowling for Soup phase as a kid and got to see them in 2019 and they not only still sound the same but are just as fun to watch as you’d expect, even if you don’t remember many of their songs. Highly recommend lol
As a teen who secretly watched LOGO every night, Cursed actually meant something to me as a mainstream movie with any gay shit in it at all. Sure, it had the gay character be homophobic almost the whole time bc it's the early 2000s and we don't have Brokeback Mountain to soften up the straights yet. But you're right Jane, Milo Ventimiglia brought some emotional heft and vulnerability to a scene in a movie largely devoid of comprehensible human emotion. This video rules #releasethecravencut
The deep dive i didnt know i needed... Excellent video! I remember watching Cursed when it came out because it was the team that made Scream and it wasnt very good and i instantly forgot all about it. Now i need the craven cut
as a gay man, i actually had a somewhat awakening to this movie (to jesse eisenberg of all people). i's not a gay movie, but ultimately it is - you're on the money there. iykyk
I'm sorry that you made this entire hour+ long beautifully researched video essay and all my brain can focus on is hot daddy from This is Us is the homophobic bully turned gay for werewolf. And the fact that Mandy Moore was in this as well pre-reshoots. Life really is crazy.
halfway thru you mentioned that lesbian werewolf movie w amandla stenberg (i think it's called 'my animal') - i have seen that and it was REALLY poorly made lol. you might find it interesting!
oh interesting! I had only seen good reviews in my very superficial look at it online. there's a part of me that doesn't want to believe it's possible to make a bad lesbian werewolf movie... but alas
This reminds me so much of another late Wes Craven movie, "My Soul To Take" that I took a ridiculous deep dive into a few months back. It is somehow a johb hughes esque teen coming of age, a scream-esque slasher, and a comedy drama all at the same time and one of the most fascinating cases of a cool premise with incredibly clumsy execution that I've ever seen. AND it has gay undertones!!!! I was so taken by it that I hunted down a bluray on ebay to get the deleted scenes and director's commentary, bc there is No coverage on it Anywhere I would honestly LOVE to see u take a swing at that one
You know, one of the interviews I read while making this video was from right before My Soul To Take released, and Wes Craven describes being really excited about it. So I've been wanting to watch it but haven't gotten around to it yet since it's not streaming anywhere. I'll definitely be watching it though!
Absolutely
Yeah, I have videos in the background while cooking, and this type of content is the best for it 👌
this is so true for me, I find it so entertaining to watch long videos about things that I have never ever seen
tbh i actively avoid watching videos about movies I've already seen
there's something so pleasing about reviews of things i never heard about, don't know why but i'm here for it
Wait, I gotta go tell my gay dog about Cursed now
The fact that a sex scene set to Bring Me to Life is not the craziest part of this movie is quite funny

It’s got a werewolf flipping the bird. How can anyone NOT remember that?
Ok but that original idea about the werewolf dancer that accidentally bites the serial killer? It sounds amazing, I want that movie.
that one shot of jimmy and brooke kissing with bo in the background looking awkward is killing me its so fucking funny. epitome of being the third wheel
I'll never not be upset that we were robbed of werewolf Skeet Ulrich.
This may seem offensive, but it’s probably for the best anyway considering how this turned out.
jane I just want you to know that the first thing I did when I finished your video was looking up bo/jimmy on ao3. I plan to read them all. thank you for this.
You’re so real for that because I did the exact same thing
Thank you for helping me find community.
I AM ON MY WAY TO DO THE EXACT SAME THING
HAHAHA definitely a lot of overlapping communities 😂 but how’s the dynamic gonna go 👀
I’m so tempted to write a full queer rewrite with the original script as a guideline

Stewart only got the gig because Kilbourne got the Late Late Show and Stewart's previously syndicated late night talk show had been cancelled.
Bowling For Soup is amazing. They gave us the Phineas and Ferb theme song. A modern classic.
THEY DID?!?!?!?
And the cover of I Ran (So Far Away) which was used in the dub version of Saint Seiya/Knights of the Zodiac
There's a reason they used to call him Harvey Scissorhands. What an incredibly despicable human being that he had to one-up himself from destroying films to destroying lives.
I also just came across an article in which apparently he actually took that name as a compliment like.......just an overall shit person
The only thing that stood out for me when I watched Cursed back in 2005 was the part where they make it clear that Craig Kilborn gets infected with the werewolf curse and then never bring it up again. There's just a werewolf Craig Kilborn running around offscreen and it doesn't come up.

hey, it’s the vampira show from twitter!!! rewatching this video bc it’s my fave 😭
The deep dive i didnt know i needed... Excellent video! I remember watching Cursed when it came out because it was the team that made Scream and it wasnt very good and i instantly forgot all about it. Now i need the craven cut
OMG, this looks amazing, release the Craven Cut!
as a gay man, i actually had a somewhat awakening to this movie (to jesse eisenberg of all people). i's not a gay movie, but ultimately it is - you're on the money there. iykyk
Went to Ao3 before this video was even finished and the first Cursed fic I read was made just because of this video so thanks for that
I'm sorry that you made this entire hour+ long beautifully researched video essay and all my brain can focus on is hot daddy from This is Us is the homophobic bully turned gay for werewolf. And the fact that Mandy Moore was in this as well pre-reshoots. Life really is crazy.
no no, those are the correct parts to focus on. don't worry
@@jane-mulcahy ok. yayyy
28:47 missed opportunity to say were-wheel
A new Jane video two hours after a new contrapoints??? March 1 is a new holiday
Studios just seem to cannot resist interfering with films and that is just endlessly frustrating
Just when I was missing Lindsey Ellis video essays a little bit extra, along comes Jane and takes the baton. Amazing work!
halfway thru you mentioned that lesbian werewolf movie w amandla stenberg (i think it's called 'my animal') - i have seen that and it was REALLY poorly made lol. you might find it interesting!
oh interesting! I had only seen good reviews in my very superficial look at it online. there's a part of me that doesn't want to believe it's possible to make a bad lesbian werewolf movie... but alas
This unlocked a memory in my brain of the movie Blood & Chocolate, another werewolf movie from around this time period
I was so taken by it that I hunted down a bluray on ebay to get the deleted scenes and director's commentary, bc there is No coverage on it Anywhere
I would honestly LOVE to see u take a swing at that one
You know, one of the interviews I read while making this video was from right before My Soul To Take released, and Wes Craven describes being really excited about it. So I've been wanting to watch it but haven't gotten around to it yet since it's not streaming anywhere. I'll definitely be watching it though!
I remember watching this when it came out and the most pressing thoughts once it was over were "what the fuck?" and "Oh no I'm bisexual."
i dont even remember watching this but i've def seen it. really pulled an oldie out of the memory bank
