I don't see it this way. I thought the documentary was imperfectly perfect. I loved the way it was conveyed. The vulnerability these men of such high regard showed throughout the movie and to each other was a pleasure to watch. Instead of speeding the movie up, I paused it at different times to make notes/copy the drawings. A very compelling film.
@@sezert Very true. We Humans need to be entertained. I did find this a lot like reading Proust...a bit of a sloppy mess that carries great meaning as you watch it over and over again, but it should not be seen as "documentary" necessarily. It kind of has no category.
I agree with every word. I found that it was a lot more palatable played at 1.5 speed. The concepts Shutz is teaching seemed basic to me (but I work in the same field); however, I can see how the pictures on the index cards work as visual cues for his patients throughout the day. Hoping people watch this and benefit from it.
Super. On point. Best review. Could be a great film without Hill being on screen. He speaks a lot about how this film is not about him and then brings a real size image of him at 12 and cry about how hard it was for him to have overweight as a kid and everything gets really contrived and awkward and bad cinema B movie quality. You're kind. Film is a total 2 out of 10. Stutz theory is nice tho. I would recommend to people in a crisis to look it up or maybe use the film with fast forwarding as a brochure but as for cinema that's not good. Film is anti cinematic.
I don’t agree. I think you missed the relational aspect which was possibly the most moving slant on the whole documentary. It was a doc/film but it was good.
Agree 100% This psychiatrist capacity for love is his greatest asset. “What comes from the heart reaches the heart” Tools are pretty useless on a hard heart!
The only part of the doc where I felt disconnected was when Phil went to lay on the bed.. that whole part felt manufactured even if it was real. Otherwise I loved every moment of it

That's the beauty of stuff like this. We can all experience it differently :D
Well put
So did I. Definitely plan on incorporating these ideas into my already complex recovery.
It's about mental health, not entertainment.
Everything is entertainment, just because the content is about mental health doesn’t mean it isn’t aiming to be entertaining.

@@InDeathUnchainedTopTips Yeah I hear you, someone needs to come up with a category outside of documentary and film for these sorts of things haha!

I should have tried that and sped up the movie haha
I'm waiting for the TH-cam edit that cuts out all of Jonah Hill and just Stutz's drawings and teachings.
Great Review! Amazing accent! 😊

Yeah it just felt disingenuous to me, which might not have been its intention but it felt that way,
Even more important than the tools…is the therapeutic relationship. I feel these two portrayed that beautifully.

The lie down scene took me way out of it. Glad to hear you enjoyed it though :D
Agree

I’m glad you enjoyed it 😁
