multifunction switch communicates over a LIN bus, it's basically a module inside. When the switch doesn't communicate the TIPM will default the wipers and headlamps on for safety, and obviously none of the other functions that the multifunction switch controls will work. Most likely you've got a bad multifunction switch. These will often come back to life with a power cycle. Since it sounds like you've got the steering column shrouds off already, unplug the switch for a few minutes and then plug it back in and see if it works. If it does come back then you'll want to replace the switch. If it doesn't come back then it will take some deeper electrical diagnosis with a voltmeter and possibly a high end scan tool.
