Gordon was one the first cds i every had. I had spent several months saving up to buy a cd player when i was young and when i bought it my dad bought me Gordon as a gift.
I'm pretty sure I burned mine to a crisp in my CD player from the number of times I played it. Front to back, it's a great album. I also still have the Yellow Album cassette. :)
For those curious what those background lyrics starting at 3:21 say: I can teach you how to dance, how to sing, how to knit How to make things that you never, ever made before Enid, I can teach you how to use a cookie cutter To make crazy things out of Play-Doh Little houses, little farms, little accessories for your mom, For your Barbie set, for your friends and your family Enid, I can teach you how to snowmobile, cross-country ski, snow-shoe But I don't want to
Wow that's like that video with the basketball and the b***. th-cam.com/video/UfA3ivLK_tE/w-d-xo.html .... I didn't even notice there were backing vocals at that point.
From what I have heard, they ate at a diner where their waitress’s name tag said “Enid”. They thought it was such a unique name, they invented a back story for her
What a great song by a great Canadian band! This sounds as fresh now as it did when it was released in the early 90s. Really love the introspective flavour of the song.....Enid....I could do this and that and such and such.....I could do it all for you...BUT I DON'T WANT TO! Priceless finish!
I am from Brazil, and i love the sound of this band. I now The Barenaked Ladies a long time. here is so dificult to listen your musics. Thanks you tube for this moments.
Steven Pages dance moves are priceless. When this cassette came out my parents played it till it died, I loved these guys and this guy, still do. I was only I think 8 at the time, but I miss all the good times from being a kid. We age too fast and miss everything all at once.
Despite how upbeat this song is, it makes me more sad than most slow songs. Just brings me back to old memories of highschool, time and suffering wasted on immature relationships. You just gotta grow up, be a man, a laugh off whats holding you down.
My mom doesnt sing in front of people but we always have music on in the car. This is one of the few songs she'll sing if I'm singing with her so it's very dear to me
Such a great song. I was too young to fully understand the storyline when this song was number one on the radio, but years later I would revisit the song and realize that the songwriter was singing not only about himself, but everyone and no one.
I started listening to BNL through my son many years ago. I think they are hugely talented and Enid is a terrific song. The band are completely under-rated
All us kids who grew up listening to BNL cassettes, radio plays and Speakers Corner rants, are now flush with cash. We'd all pay big $$$ to have all of you back together for one reunion concert!
In 1993 my parents walked by a small club in brantford, ontario and there was a sign in the window that said "tonight @ 9 Barenaked Ladies". She thought they were strippers and didn't know they were this band. Now 22 years later she's a barenaked ladies fan and is kicking herself for not going into that club.
Etigress Add another piece of trivia to that1 When BNL were scheduled to play CITY HALL in TORONTO and there was a backlash[I'M TRYING NOT TO LAUGH WHILE I TYPE THIS!!] about their name being offensive what's ironic is there is zero sex in their lyrics !! they're like overgrown kids who are great musicians !! TELL YOUR MOM go on her for catching up ENJOY!!
Yeah, you get that reaction a lot with this band. [Me around 10 or 11 or so eavesdropping on my family talking] Mom: He's really into Barenaked Ladies lately. Aunt: ...I didn't think he was old enough to like that yet!
My mum had a similar experience where a friend invited her to a concert in the 80s or so and she thought there would be strippers and she didnt want to go
In "Wednesday", her roommate is Enid Sinclair. BNL only mentions two love interests by name that I know: "Enid" and "Jane St Clair". Is this a subtle ode on the part of the Wednesday writing team? If the name were common like Mary or Kelly, I'd disregard it ... but Enid??
I remember when this album came out and all my friends thought they would just be a "flash-in-the-pan" band and that they were to gimmickey to survive. Well, here we are, about 20 yrs later and, although they have had a few member changes, they are still going strong. I got the last laugh! :-)
Gosh such great music.. Fun just fun music I cant thank my first wife she put me on to bnl Living in metro Detroit just rockin out i wish my old bones couldve saw them in concert
I've always wondered what Ed sings starting around 3:20-- but apparently it's this: "I can teach you how to dance, how to sing, how to knit, How to make things that you never ever made before Enid, I can teach you how to use cookie cutters To make crazy things out of Play-Doh. Little houses, little farms, little accessories for your mom, For your Barbie set, for your friends and your family Enid, I can teach you how to snowmobile, cross-country ski, snowshoe, But I don't want to!" Favourite part of the song :)
V Teetsov THANK YOU! All these years, "never ever made before" sounded something like "Robert Mapplethorpe" and I couldn't understand anything else! I could never understand WHY he was singing/chanting about a certain risque photographer!
+V Teetsov Thanks for breaking it down. I've always missed the Cookie cutters and the barbie set and snow mobile lines... I gotta get to trying to practice this.
there once was a time music wasn't about the prettiest person they can find to put through autotune...ah, great memories of the first album i ever bought.
25 years on, this video looks awful. Yet back in the day I saw it just once on a Saturday morning video show and instantly fell in love with Barenaked Ladies. Took me a while to find the album though, because even in '91 a TV show just after kids programmes was a bit wary of the band name and listed them as "B.N. Ladies". Pre-internet, going around record shops looking for an album knowing only an abbreviated version of the band name... well it made it hard work and I got a lot of "never heard of them mate". Once I got that album though, I had it on constant rotation for a year. And it still owns all these years later.
I lived north of Toronto when they first hit the stage. Saw them in a tiny club(before they were noticed). OMG it was so fun.The year they were to play the New Years party at city hall I was all set to go, but the mayor at the time scratched them off the list. WHY? He thought they're name BNL was too suggestive.I didn't go. Al you dropped the ball on that one. You were better at selling used cars than being mayor bud. BNL Such a fun group of guys!!
Another great part: 3:10 I can get a job, I can pay the phone bills, I can cut the lawn, cut my hair, cut out my cholesterol, I can work overtime, I can work in a mine, I can do it all for you - but I don't want to!
Classic song and great video by BNL....this is my #1 favorite.....my other favorites are This is Where it Ends, A, Intermittently, Pinch Me, One Week, It's All Been done, Raisins, Hello City, Brian Wilson. Box Set and Grade 9 and Life, In a Nutshell and JANE
Coming home from a job site, Markham to Waterloo at 9pm during July of 2019 and this come on Boom 97.3. The DJ did me a great service that night, remember it so clearly, exhausted coming home that night. Barenaked Ladies coming up on the radio in the summer... Makes you want to cry. Saudade as we say in Portuguese. 🙂. Now get together for a reunion you guys. I have 2 Gordon cassettes, one case has mould on it but that's A-OK cassette itself plays nice.
the smiles in this video really kinda scare me in an awesome way, same with Page's Dancing. LOVE IT! I also love that they always had a cello player instead of a bass player and wow ed's lost weight since then. Sorry this was all over the place.
the name of this song was inspired by a waitress in Shediac, New Brunswick...her name was Enid. The song is not about her, but they liked her name, so the named this song Enid! True story
"I can teach you how to dance, how to sing, how to knit, how to play the things that you never-ever played before. "I can teach you how to use a cookie-cutter to make crazy things out of Play-Doh. “The silence, the terror, the pain, the horror as your mom comes downstairs” LMAO
Led by Enid, Gordon was such a great album. I love these guys.
Steven Page’s dance moves throughout this video have never failed to give me a WHOMPING dose of serotonin
They're so great
Hard agree, he just cannot dance and every time I want to cry with joy
Quite literally my favourite song of all time. I could never, ever get bored of hearing it.
Same! I’ve been listening to it at least 20 times a day since April. It’s amazing
shoe
hearing one of their songs today is like reading a letter from an old friend, it;s familiar and nice, no one did it like these guys
6 years later and a lifetime ago i miss this music
Agreed
6 years? I could only be so lucky, 30 + years ago....one of the best albums ever imo
The briefest of unique sounds in the 1990s, one of the first tapes I remember buying and wearing out.

This song and video will always have a special place in my heart.
Yes me too
I have never had so much fun watchin a music video in my life.
I'm proud to say I live in Enid, Oklahoma

YEP.....this might be their best song......they do have many classics
"You can't write a love song about someone named 'Enid'!"
--Dr. Christopher Turk, Scrubs
+Thrifty032781 , I met an Enid this year. She's a friend of my housemate.
+Thrifty032781 It's not a love song ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Oh scrubs Such a great show
Thats my name
Why not??? Love, Enid
I firmly believe that all Canadians are born with the natural ability to make great music!

Who doesn't love The Ladies? Only those who have never heard them... This is just great
You can tell just how much fun they have in all their videos.
I love Steven's random spastic dance moves.
Ah gordon, takes me back
This band is nothing but Childhood memories!
All us kids who grew up listening to BNL cassettes, radio plays and Speakers Corner rants, are now flush with cash. We'd all pay big $$$ to have all of you back together for one reunion concert!
You've probably already seen it but they reunited to play for the Canadian Music Hall or something.
Scott James
I'd throw in 100K.
The most Canadian band ever I love these guys so much! I think every kid who grew up Canada listen to them. :)

I heard this song on my radio station and it's been stuck in my head for a week
Video makes me smile so much! From one of my all-time favourite albums, 'Gordon'
Agree .......great song from an awesome album
Hahahaha they were SUCH 90s dorks. Love this song and the album and the band
LOL Ed Robertson's haircut was 20 years ahead of its time! this whole band was 20 years ahead of its time - except for maybe Steven's goatee.
Its weird seeing Tyler with hair
You just wait, goatees are coming back :)
My favorite band next to The Beatles. Love them, every song is awesome. The '90s stylin' in this video crack me up.
This song is totally hyperactive. It helps me run away from all of my troubles. 🏃
Thanks band! 👍😊
Are you for real?

great video. Canadian Icons.
I vividly recall this playing on The Much Music channel every 2nd or so video. Was a high school staple, that's for sure.

Love this song listen to it all the time
This song brings me back to being 8 years old in Grade 3 in the fall of 1992.
I was 10..

Something about this video makes me want a pepsi. I can't quite put my finger on it . . .
The whole album.
LOL!!!
All I wanted was a pepsi, just one pepsi, and she wouldn't give it to me!
Gibson Guy Lol!@
CRYSTAL Pepsi.
Everytime, someone calls out to Enid on Walking dead. this is what I hear!!! and of course I sing a few bars....
The Band was complete here... It made sense here.
Great music. Back when creativity wasn't a business
I could really go for a PEPSI right now !! 😆
I wonder why that is ?🤔😜
Memory is a strange thing.

Almost a million views and not even 400 comments! Thanks for all the memories!
This song makes me feel really sad for some reason

How about what a good boy or old apartment or lovers in a dangerous time, that one's a Bruce Cockburn cover but they definitely cover it well..
I've loved BNL ever since I got Gordon for Christmas 1992, and in 2022 I was in the top 1% of Spotify listeners.
you guys are great........
