Kalamazoo bus driver who lost leg in crash ‘grateful to still be here’

La Shon Diallo was working overtime at her long-time job as a Kalamazoo Metro Transit bus driver to earn extra money for a new roof on her home. She remembers the traffic light turning green. Then she remembers waking up in the hospital.
La Shon, 47, was seriously injured when a suspected drunken driver traveling over 100 mph struck the bus. She sustained multiple injuries in the May 24 crash, and her right leg was amputated above the knee. La Shon was cared for at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo and Select Specialty Hospital in Battle Creek before coming to Mary Free Bed for rehabilitation on July 12.
During her seven-week stay at Mary Free Bed, La Shon worked diligently in physical, occupational and recreational therapy to gain strength, balance and independence. She developed strong relationships with her therapists and with her prosthetics team, who donned gym shorts - La Shon’s favorite attire for working out in therapy - to help her feel more comfortable the first time she tried on her new leg. “Before, I was afraid to sit up in bed,” La Shon said. “And now I’m walking - up a hill.”
La Shon, who graduated Aug. 25 from the inpatient Amputee Program and will continue outpatient therapy, said she’s learned to trust people since her accident. “And you need to trust yourself,” she said. “I think I’m going to be OK.” #AskForMary

Thankful this beautiful lady survived! She easily could have been killed. She is a strong survivor!! Prayers for continued healing to her and the others hurt in this wreck.
i was a cpl hundred yards behind the police and emts that were across from her at the signal...the impact was brutal...traffic stopped..first responders thank god were right there...
some of us helped the passengers and i was convinced she and the driver of the car had to be dead...to see her now smiling and persevering makes me smile as well..god speed

Her therapy brought back great memories for me. I chose to lose my RLE. Best decision ever! My prosthetist is the best! Best wishes to her!

Know what you're going through,,broke my ankle badly 2 years ago,,,was in a wheelchair for a year,,the beginning steps are always the hardest agreed,,,keep up the faith sister

Here in Belgium, we have / had an amputee bus driver, right leg above the knee ; as a survivor of a crash, he obtained an adapted bus and continued working for the transport company : the brake and speed pedals had been rebuilt just for him.
I liked her, she yelled at me once and I deserved it too. I'm so sorry that this happened to her.

By the grace of Allah I didn't get my leg cut off, however I have a dent in my leg where I was to get it cut off and I have chronic pain. This could have been me I also had to learn how to walk again you and I both are blessed to be here. I am so proud of you, you are in such good spirits you continue being yourself and may Allah guide you to all the correct things in this life.
