Thanks so much for this video. I just bought my car and was so confused when I opened the gas door and didn’t see a cap. I thought I was losing my mind. I figured it out but that was quite an experience. Again, thanks.
If you see a Capless Gas System in a car then run away. Do not buy it You can get a Stuck Gas Nozzle At The Pump, and if the Fuel nozzle gets STUCK. Trying to pull it, you may damage the easy fuel system and get the EVAP small leak code P0455 or P0456. Using a Capless Gas Tank Funnel, on sale $3.00 at Advance Auto Parts, anybody can pour anything, water, soda, in the tank, or siphon gas from the tank. If you get the EVAP small leak code P0455 or P0456, in your car with a gas cap then just replacing the gas cap $15 and 2 minutes time in 90 % of the cases you solve the problem. But in an “easy fuel system” or Capless Gas System you do not have a gas cap. In the best scenario the fuel gas tank filler system has to be replaced. But you must have a very honest car repair facility, because anybody can speculate for EVAP CANISTER, Evap Vent Solenoid, PCM, Test Port, EVAP Purge Solenoid, Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor, shut off valve. And the bill can reach $1500, not including valve cover gasket. So if you decide to buy a car, open the Gas Door, and if you see a Capless Gas System, please run away.
Here are the typical causes for those codes: - Fuel Tank Sending Unit- gasket issues. - Fuel Filler Neck- gasket can dry out - Evap System Hose- can begin to leak - Vapor Canister Purge Valve- easy to replace - Fuel cap - but you won’t have one because it’s a cap less system.

Awesome information. Just the other day I was working on a car the did have a check engine light because of this, I poked this plate couple of times and the check engine light never came on again.
Extremely helpful as not having a locking gas cap has been a concern of our family. Good to know somebody would have to really work at it to steal gas. Good information about the use of the special funnel which I guess we will put into a Ziplock bag in case we ever need to use it so we can zip it up to minimize smell from the spare tire area.
I tried to put in a fuel additive without using the funnel and it spilled all over the ground! Does it have an overflow outlet or do you think it could be a hole in fuel line? I have been getting emissions system codes for a few months now and don't know what it is.
On most vehicles the gas lid stays locked unless it’s purposely released. If your vehicle doesn’t have a locking gas lid, then you can purchase an aftermarket locking gas cap. Just check with your dealership or aftermarket parts store.

I have a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee summit. My check engine light is on and I got a p0440. The reading says evaporative emission systems. it looks just like this one with a capless gas cap. any suggestions?
It’s likely the ESIM unit located above the drivers rear tire. Remove the inner fender with a trim tool along with one or two 10mm bolts. This will reveal the ESIM module which is the white plastic unit. Disconnect the electrical harness, pull to remove the hose, pull the spring clip on the unit towards you and turn module counter clockwise to remove it. Also remove the O ring gasket. Then just replace it with another OEM part. I think the part is approximately $70.00 Canadian - where I live.
@YourHomeGarage awesome I think I know where to locate it how long does it take to replace the module? or what can be the problem? Thanks for your help
Hi just bought a 2016 Jeep Renegade and the check engine light keeps coming on, had it checked and the code 456 show up a small gas leak, what can I do? Do I need to replace or put tape around the top or replace the rubber top?
Correct, this is a small leak detected. Start with inspecting the gas cap , then the purge valve, Evap system and lastly charcoal canister/vent solenoid.
I used a hairdryer to melt the ice and it finally opened. The ice forms when the flap is opened to fill up and there is rain or snow. The water collects at the bottom of the opening and then it freezes.
Great question: For most cars, the gas lid will only open from a button/lever located inside the car or the doors have to be unlocked for the lid to open. So, the lid is the first deterrent. In order to open the flap on the capless system, equal pressure has to be placed on the flap. Therefore someones finger won't work to open it. Even with those obstacles, it's still not impossible for someone to put stuff in your tank. For added security, aftermarket locking gas caps are available for capless systems.

Just another thing to fail. As if having a microprocessor for everything on the car is not bad enough, engineers come up with this asinine idea. Ford does sell a Fuel Filler Plug for their Easy Fuel system. It's a keyed cap which works the same as a locking gas cap that would screw into the fill nozzle.
That is unfortunate, however if it's just the fuel filler pocket - it should be an easy process with a socket set, body panel tool and screwdriver. There should be a plastic cap around the fuel nozzle that pulls off which then reveals the bolts to be removed. Then reach under the fender well and push outwards on the fuel nozzle. This is when you'll need the body panel tool to then gently pry the fuel filler pocket from the fender - the entire pocket will come out. The fuel door, should come off with the screwdriver and reassemble that part on the new filler pocket. To reinstall the pocket, place the hinge side in first and push it in until it seals properly. Screw the bolts back in and push the plastic cap around the fuel nozzle. If it's the filler neck - you'll have to disconnect the main fuel line from under the vehicle and breather vent, along with a few extra clips and bolts. This part is a bit more tricky and you'll need comfortable access under the vehicle. Now, this is the general way. Your vehicle maybe slightly different since I don't know what the make and model is. Hopefully this was helpful. I don't have a video on my channel, but there are lots of great tutorials on TH-cam and maybe someone has one on your make and model.
I am leasing a 2022 chevy equinox and did not fill with gas yet. I was looking for this in videos but didn't see it shown. Yes, the fact I was wondering how to fill it with gas because there is also a rubber sheet on the right side with a circle. I wondered if that was to be pushed in for fuel. I see here, just the opening on the left is for gas thank you 😊
I just went to fill up and the trap door is stuck. It has been very cold out but other than that nothing has changed. I just used it on Thursday. Any ideas?
It’s not uncommon for ice to form on the inside of gas lids, which would make it difficult to open. Try spraying some dry lubricant on the hinge and rubber release. If the problem persists then it’s likely the cable release is failing.

They do make locking (key) caps for cap less systems. A quick part’s search for your make and model will let you know who has them. Your local dealership, aftermarket parts store or even Amazon will likely be your best bet.
The only main problem I have with being capitalist that I don't like on my vehicle is I always put locking gas caps on my vehicles to prevent someone from pouring sugar or some type of contaminant to screw up my engine I wish there was some type of conversion kit or something I could put in there to lock it down
Depending on the vehicle - they do sell locking caps for cap less systems. I would start with your local dealership followed by a Google search of your make and model.
Ford makes it very difficult to find correct locking capless lock. Search YOUR Ford and don't know it has cap from ANOTHER Ford vehicle. You must search ALL the vehicles and CONFIRM THEY LOOK exactly like yours.
Hate the easy fuel capless setup. Stupid and always have fumes, always low on gas, the gas is essentially just evaporating out of the tank. I'm looking for how you replace this with a cap. Easy fuel capless is a complete shit system.
Since you can still siphon gas from a cap less system, then yes someone can put salt or sugar in your tank. Now, salt will not dissolve in gasoline. And it’s unlikely to make it into the engine but you never know. The salt will likely get sucked into the fuel pump and clog the filter so then the engine might not run. It you noticed salt/sugar around the fuel neck take it to a shop right away. If it’s a huge concern, purchase a locking cap.
What if it's some idiot who just wanna put water or sugar in my tank how do I avoid this? The fuel door should automatically lock if the key isn't present
The fuel lid should lock once the keys are removed. However, you can buy aftermarket locking gas caps for the cap less system. Just check with your local dealership or aftermarket parts store.
So my little door u push with your finger chipped causing my engine light to go on wtf is that thing called or do I have to replace the whole thing cuz it’s like 200+ what do I do someone comment with sum help I’m f*** stressing
Do you have an OBD reader to verify the code from the check engine light? It's likely an EVAP leak based on your description, but always better to verify before. What is the year, make and model?
Sorry for the late reply - I believe you’re referring to the drain hole which gets rid of excessive fluid, such as water from a heavy rain or spilled fuel.
Odds are you're good, but just pay close attention to the following which could be signs that water got into the fuel system from spraying in that area. Rough acceleration, rough idle, check engine light comes on, hard starts...just to name a few symptoms. When I clean the fuel filler area, it's usually with a light spray (not a pressure washer) or just a microfiber cloth to pick up the contaminants. Cheers
Where's this gasket you speak of? Is it on the outside or inside? Inside meaning you'd have to drop the tank or somethibg to replace it... With screw caps the gasket is right in your hand or you just screw on a new cap...
The spring loaded mini cap is past the outside lid that I pushed in during the opening frame. It might be a bit difficult to see but it's there. As for replacement, it is a process, but you won't have to drop the tank. Most capless systems come as a complete kit, so you will unbolt it from the body of the vehicle and then disconnect and replace the fill tube that goes to your tank.
It seems very sketchy, the design doesn't bother me in terms of me filling up. Although whats to stop someone sticking a hose down to siphon some fuel or stick gravel down while you're tucked in bed on a night?
Capless gas systems have a unique mis-fueling inhibitor to reduce siphoning. If a nozzle going into the tank is a foreign tube of a different size, ie a plastic hose is placed in the filler neck, the latches will not release. That's why it's important to use the filler funnel that comes with your vehicle if your were to run out of gas and needed a jerry can. But - when there is a will there's a way!
@@YourHomeGarage To be honest i understand and see the positives but i just think it would have been a lot more peace of mind if the outside cap door could only be opened from the inside of the car.
Generally, the car must be unlocked in order to open the fuel lid or as you indicated there is a fuel switch somewhere in the car. I can't think of a make/model of car that has fuel lid that anyone can access without unlocking first and has the capless gas system - but maybe there is a manufacturer out there that did it that way?
@@YourHomeGarage All i know is, if you search up some Ford Fiesta models like i own a Titanium Ecoboost model. The outside filler cap door has a little lip at one side where you just pull it open with absolute ease. Then inside is the exposed "smart" fuel filler system.
I don't think my gas can would work very well with that funnel. Mine is a release lever at the end of the nozzle then you push against the lip of whatever you're feeling to let the fuel come out.
This is not good gas, cap less, if for any reason someone dosen't like you, they could add anything to your gas tank and damage your vehicle, I personally like the old school, looking gas cap with keys.
I have a 2017 Ford Explorer XLT. The bad guys, can easily get the special funnel and siphon off some gas.... AND, that that's how I had half a tank of gas stolen out of the tank. so, I went and bought a locking gas cap, so that wouldn't happen again. The car comes with one of those "special" funnels , in case you run out of gas and need to use a gas can to fill the tank up....
Exactly. I'm not concerned about people stealing my gas. They just people free access to my tank. There are funnels long enough to allow people to put things in your tank.
Truly the worst idea any one could have ever put on a vehicle. I've spelled more gas with one of these. Than I had ever did and before and I'm 55. I hate it on my Chrysler
There are definitely a lot of people who feel the same about the system. Manufacturers such as Ford , GM, Chrysler, Honda and so on have definitely adapted it in most of their models.
Have you ever run out of gas?
No never but I have worked on cars where the only problem was no gas and the customer didnt notice or think of it they just called a tow truck.

@Your Home Garage it don't lock on my 2021 yukon denali or my 2021 charger. It locks on my 2011 Infiniti which is crazy because that's a older car
I didn’t realize that on those particular models - thanks for letting me know.
Yeah, now I gotta check all new cars to see if they have this and if they do, no sale
Mine got cap seal problem, I did many times to fill with tank without factory insertion… hope I see this earlier
Unfortunately the factory funnel is the key. Sorry to hear that it’s not sealing properly.
What is the small hole under the capless one?
Sorry for the late reply - I believe you’re referring to the drain hole which gets rid of excessive fluid, such as water from a heavy rain or spilled fuel.
@@YourHomeGarage thanks bro. I washed my car and sprayed water there and thought it was a kind of breather from the gas tank
Cheers
Can't dirt be pushed in
Where's this gasket you speak of? Is it on the outside or inside? Inside meaning you'd have to drop the tank or somethibg to replace it...
With screw caps the gasket is right in your hand or you just screw on a new cap...
The spring loaded mini cap is past the outside lid that I pushed in during the opening frame. It might be a bit difficult to see but it's there. As for replacement, it is a process, but you won't have to drop the tank. Most capless systems come as a complete kit, so you will unbolt it from the body of the vehicle and then disconnect and replace the fill tube that goes to your tank.
2023 Buick Encore GX... capless gas system..problem...you cannot prevent unauthorized access to your gas filler opening... the door doesn't lock.
Did not know that - thanks for sharing.
How do I know the tank is full if I use the funnel that comes with it.
Lifesaver!!
@@rufusgreenleaf2466 I’ll have to Google that car - thank you for letting me know.
Now instead of siphoning the gas from your tank, thieves now will just punch a hole in your gas tank!
Give 'em ideas! Thanks!!
@@sableonblonde1973 They been doing it for years already.
I am sure Mr. Arson knows how to blow up modern cars
I don't think my gas can would work very well with that funnel. Mine is a release lever at the end of the nozzle then you push against the lip of whatever you're feeling to let the fuel come out.
What car is that
Honda Civic Si
This is not good gas, cap less, if for any reason someone dosen't like you, they could add anything to your gas tank and damage your vehicle, I personally like the old school, looking gas cap with keys.
Are you talking in a tunnel? Can’t understand anything you’re saying.
Volume sucked
Ferd finger trap. It'll grab ya. A dipstick is the only way to get out without tearing the nail off
I have a 2017 Ford Explorer XLT.
It’s unfortunate some of your fuel was siphoned. But locking gas caps or filler plugs are incredibly useful.
What if someone pour water or anything else inside it? Kinda stupid. Should have had a locking fuel door
Exactly. I'm not concerned about people stealing my gas. They just people free access to my tank. There are funnels long enough to allow people to put things in your tank.
...its bad enuff ya get ho$ed at the pump...now ya gotta fight to fill up...ya can't win,eh?
Terrible, they malfunction and give you an engine light for evap leak.
So had it turn off is ok, nothing to worry about?
Truly the worst idea any one could have ever put on a vehicle. I've spelled more gas with one of these. Than I had ever did and before and I'm 55. I hate it on my Chrysler
_No Cap_
Hard to understand his voice
Oh no not abit of gas on my hand, haha people so soft
this new non-gas cap is junk, might as well just pour dirt in to your truck.
Just making them worse every year, this has no benefit whatsoever just a pain in the A__.
Capless gas tank shutoff
Point is Newer cars are just crap
More BS on vehicles you dont want or need - which is why old cars are best
People ford sucks 😞😔
Garbage idea
There are definitely a lot of people who feel the same about the system. Manufacturers such as Ford , GM, Chrysler, Honda and so on have definitely adapted it in most of their models.
@@YourHomeGarage Hello. I have 2022 Pathfinder SL. Is there any suggestions on gas locking caps?
