  • The South African Woman Who Built the First Luxury Hotel in the Slums is a video about Mrs. Annette Skaap who is an Entrepreneur who built a Luxury Boutique Hotel in Khayelitsha which is one of the biggest slums in the world. She did this in a bid to change the narrative about Khayelitsha in Cape Town, South Africa. I sat down with her to share her story and why she decided to take on this massive task. Really proud of Annette. The South African township landscape is a goldmine of economic opportunities for indigenous locals. The township was Apartheid's design and biggest weapon against black social and economic progress, and we used it as a counter-weapon against them by building social cohesion which gave rise to the freedom struggle across the whole country. It's about time we started using it for our economic advancement as well. Sis Annette is carrying the torch for our generation. The solution to the overwhelming crime in the Townships is bringing economic opportunities home.

That's not a slum bro, that is a "kasi"/ township. You can clearly see good roads, and properly planned infrastructure, hospitals and malls... never seen those in a "slum".

Townships in South Africa are not slums. One famous youtuber once said Soweto is the biggest slum in Africa, this after visiting Vilakazi Street, Diepkloof, Pimville and Maponya Mall. We know what some slums look like in other countries and they know too but that doesn't stop them calling our townships slums. I wish the drone images were zoomed more so people could see the real picture.

I love her, when she said ' I have been exposed to luxury and opulence and I thought why not bring it home', damn just profound.

I’m Black American and I’m so proud of our sister in the Motherland for building up her community when others had given up on it. This is so inspirational. I will absolutely book a stay at her hotel when I visit. This is absolutely something worth investing in! Keep it up, sis. May the Most High continue to bless you. ❤

The Origin of Khayelitsha. The name is of Xhosa origin and means 'new home'. She is doing the name and her people justice, by investing where it is needed the most, and that is Home. Continue to inspire, shine and spark Tayo, another blessed video.

Townships are not slums. Many townships are same as any other suburbs. The difference between township and suburbs is that townshourips were designed for Blacks, and Coloured people, and suburbs were for whites and Indians only. In government terminology, when a new suburb is buid, including gated communities, they refer it as township is established. The planning is the same. In townships,, especially in Gauteng, there are millionairs staying there. Information settlement is when people build shacks next to a townships mostly for work opportunities. Slums are delapidated areas, mostly informational areas. Thank for your informative video.

What an amazing woman. She saw an opportunity to add to the growth of that area when most people just focused on the negative.

She’s very smart. By the time that neighborhood gets gentrified her establishment will already be a significant landmark.

South African townships are more like hidden gems instead of slums, what apartheid has taught us people of colour is to invest back into our homes and expand them just like this lady but we need more investments running in them as some of them can be thriving new cities

This Beautiful township beying called a Slum has running/drinkable water, Electricity, Sewage systems, waste management systems and very good access roads etc. It is a properly planned ‘location’ as we love to call it as South Africans.
