I got to see EMERSON , LAKE , & PALMER , twice . So thankful for that , as Greg Lake and Keith Emerson have passed away . One of the Best Concerts I've ever seen !!!
Karn Evil 1st impression Keith Emerson Keyboards ... He was listed #1 the greatest keyboard player of all time in year end polls for several years in many polls. However... Keyboard magazine was launched in 1975. They had a yearly poll and Keith was voted #1 every year until his death in 2016.
Emerson, Lake and Palmer were undoubtably one of the most ambitious and innovative of the British progressive rock bands. They released groundbreaking studio and live albums where they pushed musical boundaries to their limits. Although many people refer to ELP as prog rock band, they’re much more than that. Their music is eclectic. They draw inspiration from a variety of sources including folk rock, jazz, rock and classical music. From 1970 to 1974 it seemed that ELP could do no wrong. They were one of the most successful bands on both sides of the Atlantic, becoming festival favourites and stadium fillers. ELP were true titans of progressive rock and left a lasting impact on the music scene of their era. A visionary band, their music was not only innovative and inventive but also highly influential. The albums "Emerson, Lake and Palmer," "'Pictures at an Exhibition," "Tarkus," "Trilogy," "'Brain Salad, Surgery," and 1974's "Welcome Back My Friends to the Show That Never Ends...." are timeless, epic and ambitious, featuring a group at the peak of their creative powers. - edited from DEREKSMUSICBLOG
Glad you enjoyed it! As a percussionist, I had to request this. 😃The looks on Kathy's face when they showed Keith was playing on opposite sides of himself and when Carl was ringing the bell and started spinning were great.
Let me tell you ladies something, you've cheated yourselves. As someone who's been a big Emerson, Lake, and Palmer fan for over 50 years, there is so much more to this song. I bought "Brain Salad Surgery" in 1973 and "Welcome Back My Friends to the Show That Never Ends...." in 1974. The whole song goes just shy of 30 minutes on the studio album and over 35 minutes live. Having listened to both versions probably 100's of times over the years, it's an experience that shouldn't be missed.
Ladies you must know that Carl was not on speed during that drum solo like most rock drummers! Carl was a third degree black belt and in the best shape of any drummer ever !!!! You should play it again but do the hole song . Part 1 and part 2 !!!!
I would set Carl Palmer next to Billy Cobham (same era), different genres but equally virtuosic and brilliantly creative and inventive. th-cam.com/video/OMTXjmVd6AI/w-d-xo.html
I never saw ELP in concert but I did see Carl Palmer playing with the group Asia. One of the few drummers that plays conventional style (One hand overarm, other hand underarm like military drummers). Sadly the only surviving member of the band here.
Magnificent masterpiece, difficult to digest at first glance for those who are not used to this level of complexity. This live version incorporates an excellent extended solo by Palmer, where he shows that in addition to being able to play very finely in the jazz style, he could also be a real beast on the drums.
Karn Evil 1st impression ..... Does...The Greatest Show on Turf.... sound familiar? The Rams used this song for their theme in the early 2000's. The song was played at the beginning of the broadcast of their games. This is actually Part 2 of the 1st impression. It starts at the end of side 1 on the album. The Carnival section begins during the last 3 minutes of part one. Then you flip the album over and you get part 2 which starts with welcome back my friends.
Really glad you reacted to this!! ELP and Yes was what we were listening to when we were 14 years old. I was fortunate to see them several times back in the day, and met them twice at meet and greets. They were very gracious!! And your circus reference is correct! Karn Evil is a reference to "carnival". The entire recording of Karn Evil 9 is over 20 minutes long with three separate impressions.
Carl Palmers drum set was a specially commissioned monster made of stainless steel and with the rotating platform weighted 2 and a half tons ! When they were touring many venues had to have their stages reinforced
There are a few different tracks from the same concert just search for ELP California Jam.... acoustic guitar ballads, piano solos etc. Also they reformed in the early 90's and did an amazing concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London, some amazing clips from that one, especially Picture at an Exhibition and Fanfare for the Common Man are must see!
I have to laugh, you had the same expression I had when I saw them a little later on this tour in Buffalo NY July 26 1974. I've been to a lot of concerts over the years and this was by far the best!!! you have to check out Keith Emerson's flying piano, or playing his Hammond organ from underneath it . RIP Keith and Greg!!! 2016 YOU ARE MISSED!!!
Carl Palmer is a percussionist, first and foremost. This is probably why he gets overlooked as the best drummer, but hey ho. He is brilliant. Saw him in Glasgow before covid and he was par excellence.
Other great listens by ELP include Tarkus and Trilogy. One little story from Emerson’s autobiography ’Pictures on an Exhibitionist’ tells of a stadium gig in Japan when due to torrential rain the power failed, Keith and Greg left the stage leaving Carl to perform a drum solo. On finding out that there was no chance of the power being restored, they got into a limo and headed back to the hotel. When they were a couple of miles away from the stadium they rolled down the window and could still hear Carl playing! Needless to say, when Carl eventually got back to the hotel he wasn’t too happy with them.
The Drummer Carl Palmer) just turned 74 and is still touring Amazing!!!!!! Montreux Jazz Festival 1997 Live!!! Medley Part 2 too see a mind blowing keyboard sole 🔥🔥🔥🔥💥💥💥💥 remember the Name Keith Emerson ❤️✌🏼
Karn Evil 1st impression ... A warning and description of a dystopian future. ...2nd Impression is just the most incredible piano and no words.... 3rd impression is the War between AI computers and man' BTW.... My cousins were at the Jam and up front. I keep looking for them but its not possible to scan the crowd without stopping the video then it gets blurry. However... they did have a fire and you can see it between Greg doing Still you turn me on and lucky man but you just see their silhouettes.

I made a joke about their "Tarkus" in your recent Pink Floyd video (armadillos), haha but maybe you *will* actually react to that one someday! :D "KE9 1st impression, pt. 2" is a fantastic intro to their music (though I like the original studio version best). You should check out Rachel Flowers (an amazing keyboardist) and her international collaboration videos of ELP's music--they are absolutely astounding faithful covers of ELP's very difficult music like this tune...
The late Keith Emerson wrote this and performed all the keyboards. He was one of the greats for sure! The late Greg Lake on guitar, bass, and lead vocals and Carl Palmer percussionist extrordinaire on drums ! What a great band and i saw them live in the 70s.Great reaction ladies! 😊
Only Part 2... I thought they were going to do the whole (radio unfriendly) first impression. There's only a part 1 and part 2 because They had to split it across sides of the LP.
If you can have a look at Fanfare for the Common Man at Montreal Olympic Stadium in 1977 . ELP's adaptation of Aaron Copland's composition.Cheers and stay safe.
47 years ago I saw Emerson, Lake & Palmer, the Climax Blues Band, The J. Geils Band and Foghat at Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois at what was called The Super Bowl Of Rock. There was roughly 67,000 people there. It was one heck of an afternoon and evening.
I first heard the short 3 and a half minute radio version , over 40 years ago , and nobody could tell me who it was . Just found out about 12 years ago , now I have 8 of their albums , my favorite being , Welcome Back My Friends To The Show That Never Ends ! Fantastic live album/CD ! Almost annoys me , I missed out on 30 years of this ! But I know now how good they are !
This was from a live network television program that aired weekends (I think Fridays) on ABC. The concert was the first California Jam, 1974. It was one of the first concerts that also had its audio simulcast over FM radio, the idea being that people could listen to higher quality stereo audio while watching on television. All of this would have been quite a technical logistical achievement for that time...ELP headlined over several superstar level bands, including Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and The Eagles...
My roommate used to use this song as a wake-up alarm! LOL ELP is a great band, and this not their best one. So much talent in this band! Thank you, ladies, for the wake-up song!
The 2nd impression is my ring tone. Last year I was getting a blood draw for labs and my phone rang. I couldn't answer it right away. The phlebotomist asked who that was on piano.
@@realamerican5813 "Smoke on the Water" as ring tone. I might have done that too but I am a little hard of hearing so I do songs that are loud right off the bat and another ring tone Is Still got the blues for you by Gary Moore. That piercing sound of the guitar works really good.
When I first saw them live in 1970, that's all I got to see of Palmer, a drum kit, a head, and sticks flying. Totally amazing. (Run the two words of the title together Carnival 9)
I saw them around the same timeframe, and was blessed to see a few other times. Most of the that was all you got to see of Carl Palmer; a head and a blur of what you suppose are drumsticks weaving of the most intricate rhythms! Is sad that Keith Emerson (self-inflicted gunshot) and Greg Lake (cancer) are no longer with us.
Try The song trilogy from the album Trilogy . One of the most talented groups of all time regardless of music type. They are basically a 3 piece orchestra. Superb.
Any more suggestions for ELP, hmmm... let me think. The problem is where the hell do you start. So much of their music was next level and some of their best songs (like Karn Evil 9 or Tarkus) were broken up into "parts" or "movements" and you really have to listen to the whole thing to get the full effect. But that said, I think you ladies would get a kick out of a live version of "Knife Edge" or the studio version of "Pirates".
When I saw Carl and his band two years ago, he did a drum solo and he still uses the gongs too. He is just as good now as he was 50 years ago. The full piece has three impressions and lasts around 30 minutes.
Three other great songs from Emerson, Lake & Palmer are, From The Beginning, Still... You Turn Me On, and Pirates. Carl Palmer is an exceptional drummer. For a 3 man band, these guys put on a great show.
Karn Evil 1st impression...Carl palmer The drummer is heavily into the martial arts and you have to have stamina. His drum kit is made of stainless steel and weights 2 and half tons. It takes 2 men to pick up the bass drum. See how it came to be in this interview with Carl---->th-cam.com/video/i9xuO6ARf2c/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUeQ2FybCBwYWxtZXIgZHJ1bSBraXQgaW50ZXJ2aWV3

From the same concert you should be able to find Keith on his spinning grand piano, also from Montreal concert 1977 i would recommend Pirates, Tank and Fanfare for the common man
Great reaction, ladies! These three elite musicians were pioneers of progressive rock music, and made some incredible music together. I share your enthusiasm for that drum solo. I find most drum solos pretty boring, even if they're technically great. But Palmer's drum solo was not just technically impressive, but very entertaining. It never got close to boring. I would highly recommend: Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Fanfare For The Common Man (Live at Olympic Stadium, Montreal, 1977)
For me carl palmer greatest drums ever that was truly genius and greg lakes singing and guitar playing phenomenal and the wizzardy of keith Emerson one of the all time best prog rock bands
My favorite song from my favorite band. Saw them twice in '74. AWESOME. Note: This is the 2nd side of "Part 1" on the album. I prefer the first side (but love all parts).
Best use of a song in a movie soundtrack. Here's a peek at what my teen years were like growing up in SoCal. Karn Evil 1st impression is perfect for this scene. Karn Evil is "carnival". The Karn Evil song group are 4 songs that tell a story of humanity creating technology to where technology passes humanity and finds humans to be useless. The song you saw is a show of various human acts displayed for others to see. Greg Lake sings the role of the carnival barker. The song's so busy because of the sensory overload one gets from a carnival.
Karn Evil 1st impression You are scheduled to do it it again in August (either the 19th or the 26nd )at my request but I requested the remastered version that added the beginning of the carnival section. You don't have to do it. I am however wanting the other ELP song I requested and it is version specific.
I have been Listerning to elp yes and genesis now for 52 years and I can honestly say that there is no music anywhere that is better than these 3 genius bands now i often get asked who is the best i can not seperate them they are on equal par with one another incidentally please if you can try some Early genesis from 1970 to 1978 its absolutely fantastic mind-blowing any way thanks you girls keep up the amazing playing of these masterpieces

This english rock band were brilliant but never quite had the success as other British bands...fanfare for the common man ....was their biggest success..they were around in the 70s and 80s.....
It really is about a futuristic circus with an amazing sideshow. Prog Rock at near it's zenith. However, the excesses that used to impress me; now sort of embarrass me.

You don't have to do it. I am however wanting the other ELP song I requested and it is version specific.
I went to consert in Jackson
Was great
Please listen to all three pieces in a row and I think you'll be blown away.
If you liked ELP listen to Tarkus the title tack from their 2nd album
If you like good drums you must check out the drummer from rush Neil Peart he is called the professor of drums!
I seen them meny years ago
Carl Palmers drum set was stainless steel and weighed over a ton
Greg Lake playing guitar and singing while chewing gum.
Favorite stuff. But Kathy is having a great day. Have you guys done some Blue Oyster Cult yet?
No, but I will definitely put that on our list.
I say it all the time.
Decade of the Seventies poll.

Karn Evil or Carnival.
Karn evil = carnival
This english rock band were brilliant but never quite had the success as other British bands...fanfare for the common man ....was their biggest success..they were around in the 70s and 80s.....
It really is about a futuristic circus with an amazing sideshow. Prog Rock at near it's zenith. However, the excesses that used to impress me; now sort of embarrass me.
for their softer side try Still you turn me on or Lucky man.
note that in this part of the suite that emerson is playing the bass notes with his left hand so Lake can play lead guitar
Lucky Man..... Great song. One hell of a three man band.
1st impression PART 2!!!
