Scoring 2 goals, including the playoff game winning goal, 24 hours after his mother died, on mothers day. That is definitely what you call strength of character

The Stanley Cup is the championship trophy for the NHL playoffs, and it's one of the hardest trophies to win in sports. To win it you must win 4 best-of-7 series (similar to the NBA playoff structure), and playoff hockey is fast, rough, brutal, and taxing on player's bodies, and they play pretty much every other night. That goal at 8:17 was in overtime when Los Angeles had a 3-1 lead in the series. That goal won them the Stanley Cup

St. Louis scored that goal on Mother’s Day after just losing his mother…..In French he mouths the words “ ma coeur “ ( my heart ).

Valor in this context means to put your body on the line for the good of the team. Hence it shows players laying out, blocking the puck (which can, and has, broken bones)
Also, fighting is a way that players self-regulate the sport. There's a bunch of unwritten rules in hockey (there's plenty of videos out there if you're curious about them) for instance: no hitting the goaltender. There will be retaliation. The referees allow it until it hits the ice or no action takes place. Then it gets broken up and each player gets 5 minutes in the penalty box.
It really is a beautiful sport and the more you learn about it, the better it gets.

It’s not a ball, it’s a puck. A hockey puck, made of vulcanized rubber, hard has a rock !

Also I like to think fighting stays in hockey because in deep rural canada (where I am) it's not uncommon to end an argument with a scrap (a fight without animosity) and you just air out your anger and frustration. After the fight you help eachother up, shake on it, go for drinks. We're a tad old-school here 😅

That would sting? Hockey pucks are made of vulcanized rubber, and frozen before the game. They have been clocked at over 100 mph. On one of those shots during 'valor', which means bravery, where the defenceman blocked it with his ankle, it broke his ankle.
The reason fighting has always been a part of hockey, is that they police themselves. If players take cheap shots when the refs are not looking, instead of it continuing, the enforcer will take care of it. It is not legal, as fighting IS a penalty, but the players do not get thrown out of the game, or get fined. Unless they go beyond just fighting, like spearing, kicking etc.
In order for a team to win the Stanley Cup, they have to win 4 series, each series being a best of seven. So they need to win four out of seven games against a team. And then do that 3 more times!!! No ties allowed, no shoot outs in playoffs, any ties at the end of regulation will continue being played in 20 minute periods until the next goal. So probably one of the HARDEST trophies to win.

Adding an extra info here. The consistency and tensile strength of frozen vulcanized rubber is almost equal to steel...so that thing is BRUTAL.

In 1892 Sir Frederick Arthur Stanley, Lord Stanley of Preston was the Governor General of Canada. He had fallen in love with the game of hockey and felt it needed a trophy to be awarded to the best team in the sport. He purchased a Sterling Silver Bowl in London that had been made in Sheffield and had it engraved and called it The Dominion Challenge cup. He Donated it to the sport of hockey and asked that it be awarded to the best team in hockey. The original cup remains in the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto and never leaves because it's become too delicate to carry around. The current cup that is presented is the presentation cup and is an exact duplicate of the original. When a team wins the cup their names are added to the cup (including to the original) and so they literally become a part of history.
The Stanley Cup is literally priceless. It is without a doubt the most coveted trophy in sports.

I played for nearly 10 years as a Defenseman. I blocked MANY pucks. As long as you block it right and get it in the shin pads you don't even really feel it, get it in the wrong spot and you're missing some games.
The puck is frozen vulcanized rubber so when it hits somewhere without padding you notice real fast, had some serious goose eggs, luckily no broken bones.

catching the puck with an open hand is allow but it has to go to the player to his stick first then to any other player. if not it is whistled down and go to a face off

A handpass is hockey is illegal if it's to another player. You can catch or swat it down to your own stick and it is fully legal. Because hitting the puck above your shoulders with the stick is also illegal, because you could very easily seriously injure someone

  • @cheryla7480
    @cheryla7480 ปีที่แล้ว

Body checks ( hits ) are a legal defensive move. You can only target the opposing player who is in possession of the puck. The legal checks are the hip check and the shoulder check and you can only hit the opposing player between his neck and hip. Illegal checks if seen by the ref results in penalties. Yes Hockey is the best sport in the world. It’s a real man’s sport. You have to be tough to play it….tough enough to play through your injuries. In this sport no one stubs their toe then grabs their leg and rolls around on the ground screaming like a woman and a find like their leg has been cut off.

With the fighting, its a release. Better to fight than to take a hard hit that might end a career because the opposing player was angry. Also, the hits are tame now compared to even a decade ago.
