      @@odom2142 He still had it in 94, lost it for a long time after that. Towards the end of the Sam and Dave tour, he had worked his voice back into decent shape as evidence here, and the scream was okay but not like it used to be. But better than it was on the two 96 songs, for sure.

    David Lee Roth IS Van Halen, whether he plays with them or not. Probably the most notable voice and frontman in rock from back in the day...and those were my days. Ya know, father time catches up with all of us. like it or not. Most people that say he's washed up are probably young and / or are VanHagar kids. I agree, he was still in good form here. His original roots were Motown and blues, He's had an AMAZING career even after Van Halen. The voice is an instument too, and Diamond Daves been singin' his pipes out and 'man, that scream' for years. Wears a voice down.
    Sure, the latest stuff is hard to watch, he's singing in too high of a register....listen to his slower bluesy stuff...Plus, he's got a zest for life that most of us only wish we could have. Notihing against Sammy, but growing up on the original Van Halen..when dave left VH...I left them too. Rock on Dave. ;-)

    • @akimmbo
      @akimmbo 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      yep I AGREE, if he does another solo, he's good at the mid range bluesy stuff, It's that high register and screams that he's 'lost'. Stay in the pocket David Lee, and we'll all love ya.

    • @chistophercraft8067

      @akimmbo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@chistophercraft8067 yep. he sings in many ranges If you try singing along with some of his vocals on A Different Kind of Truth, he's in amazingly high pitch, and not falsetto either, and nailing most of the notes. But yes, when he stays in that midrange area, that's his domain.. the man's still got it. BIG TIME

    This was the DLR I seen in 2002 that lost the coin flip and opened for Sammy here in Houston ! Dave still had enough voice left that he was actually singing , it was amazing . Sammy came out with is Waborita bar Tequila stage setup and I loved Sam's solo music so that was good but him with VH was a pop rock band like what Def Leopard became (thanks Mutt ) . VH with DLR was a Hard Rockin MONSTER . Depending on your age you love 1 or the other ? I will always like the DLR fronted VH best dirty, crunchy and aggressive are adjectives that describe DLR VH days , records ect...

      Ryan Eriksson True that. Sammy and I would probably get along , as we are so beach and ocean minded, but Sammy just doesn't do anything for me. The party was Over when he joined in 85. I wish VH would have retired in 2009. I loved the 2008 tour. Dave is Done, and the brown sound is dead and gone. Hate those damn Wolfgang guitars.

    • @LiquidSwords5150
      @LiquidSwords5150 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      wow..... sammy has his moments with van halen but like you said van hagar was a whole other ball game when he joined.... the brown sound will never die though, still sounds so beautiful and crisp... they should all be able to do an album of some sorts together but ego's are always ego's and i think dave plays the i'm to good for you card to sammy but hey this is the music business in the end so you never know what could happen

    • @MacPro8CoreMan
      @MacPro8CoreMan 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      DLR was rarely this good in concert. But he was a much better entertainer that Hagar... Cant stand fucking Sammy or 99% of the Van Hagar songs. I've seen VH with Diamond Dave at the Mic TEN times. I wouldn't walk across the street to see Van Hagar. The 2007, 2012 and 2015 shows were awesome! You missed out dude!

    • @MacPro8CoreMan
      @MacPro8CoreMan 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But if Van Halen would have retired in 2009 then we would not have A Different kind of Truth!!! No... We need a 2018 Tour with Michael Anthony back at bass. In truth Wolf is 10 times better bass player, but Mike has the backup vocals. I hope we get the new Wolf solo album before the end of 2017. That'll keep him busy during 2018. So Mike could make a temporary comeback for a 40th Anniversary Tour. Dave is far from done. There are millions of fans that would like one more DLR fronted album, I know I'd love it. Trust me; Dave's singing has never been very good live. But you don't go to the show for any other reason then to get to see the greatest guitarist in history play one more time! You buy the albums to hear DLR in the studio, and to hear his world class lyrics (plus to hear Eddie too).

Young on guitar here, at this point in the timeline early 00's, is on the same level as Al Estrada is now (Dave's current guy on the KISS tour). This was around 2002. This was the band he toured with on the Sammy and Dave tour. Super ultra tight band. James Lomenzo on bass was in "White Lion" and Zakk Wylde's 1st post Ozzy band "Pride and Glory", which was before " Black Label Society". Ray on drums is bad to the bone - a musician's musician- went to Berklee school of music or somewhere like that. Brian Young on guitar is amazing, especially this song - note for note. Although other than this, I don't know anything about him, except that I heard he was in the VH tribute band "Atomic Punks". That is where Roth got a lot of his guitarists from was that tribute band. I also heard Brian Young later sued Roth over that he didn't get his full compensation from that tour. Roth is a jerk now, and can't sing. Sammy is just a better person and treats those around him well...and he still has his voice at 68 yrs. old! Read the articles about that tour by Sammy, and how Roth wouldn't do one song together with him the whole tour!

      Or dirty blonde or whatever color he had in late 80’a early 90’s but bleached blonde/platinum blonde with that much volume makes him look like Dr Rockso or just wild rock and roll clown. His face still looks like young Dave here, better than he did at the 96 MTV music awards more like his old self but the bright high volume blonde makes him look older. I hate to be the one to have to have this comment. Sadly, Eddie Van Halen lost his battle with cancer. He passed away October 6th 2020. Whichever version of Van Halen you like, Eddie left us with some great music.
