All good advice however there is something I would add to that equation of complication. That is your aquariums ability to support the bio load dictates how many fish you can actually keep in there and keep them healthy(combined with your comments about overcrowding). You could have 100 gallon pond and have 10 fish in it and as long as your nitrates are low (and they are not overcrowding) then you can support them. Put your comments about dealing with them when they are 10 times as big as 100% on the money. I would tell people that if you want a pond with a lot of fish you probably need a giant bio filter to support the bio load. After that think about how many fish at full size can swim around without bumping into each other, then make sure they have sufficient hiding places from predators. And make sure that you have good oxygenation.
My little tip is to buy a backwash filter. One of those that you can crank a handle to clean every week. Then replace the filter media and the uv bulb every year. It makes cleaning so much easier rather than having to dismantle a filter just to clean fish poo.
I always start with a large number of very young fish, aprox 4-6 inches. Then I feed them well and remove the ones that I don't like how they are developing. I did that for years with my fish breeding. I have 2 -1000 gallon ponds, one will be for butterfly only the other standard. I'm starting off with about 20 fish in each, by the end... I won't have more than 3. It will just depend on how they mature. Selling off those other fish help to support the cost of raising the others.
That"s a good idea! I am planning a 1000 gallon above ground build with a 2000 gallon capacity filter system. I had planned on putting only 3 koi in it and waiting on them to grow into it. I like your idea better.
Ten or more years ago i built a planter into a cement pond! 21 feet long 7feet wide 2 to 4 foot deep ! I never had a filter or air just a big pump rolling it over ! Never dumped it or cleaned it ! So now I built a second pond with a 3 x 55 gallon biofilter and UV and added air ! I've found many more fish in old pond then I had ! Being half full of plant's its a natural nursery! The water looks like mud and has that old pond smell ! But I used it to seed the new addition ,I used pool paint and was warned it would kill them ! So I filled it and dumped about 50 gallons of muddy water and gave it a week ! Worked fine ,sides are green water's clear and I added about 30 fish out of the old pond! It seems to have 100 plus fish ! 3 or 4 generations ! I need to thin it out! PS I never fed my fish anything else then dry cat food ( meow mix ) ! They all look very healthy and some are 3 feet or a bit bigger ! The gold fish got a foot long and fat like footballs
