LYRICS
Standing on the backs of angels
Destined to create
Mounting the attack
While heroes carry your weight
We spiral toward disaster
Survival fading faster
Riding out the wave
Content to feed off the machine
Bleeding us to death
The new American dream
You're blinded by your hunger
Beware, your days are numbered
Tears fall from the shameless
Shelter me, guide me to the edge of the water
Selfless are the righteous
Burden me, lead me like a lamb to the slaughter
Blurring lines drawn in between
What is right and what is wrong
Victims on parade are
Stringing us along
We're onto your agenda
The dead end road to nowhere
Tears fall from the shameless
Shelter me, guide me to the edge of the water
Selfless are the righteous
Burden me, lead me like a lamb to the slaughter
Tears fall from the shameless
Shelter me, guide me to the edge of the water
Selfless are the righteous
Burden me, lead me like a lamb to the slaughter
Selfless are the righteous
Burden me, lead me like a lamb to the slaughter
Thank you mike mangini for all these years, and for keeping dream theater alive
I can’t even help but to agree, although my fav dream
Theater years and discography involve portnoy, I will say there was no one else to replace but Mr. Mangini himself. Thank you Mike Mangini for keeping the spirit alive when we thought “The Spirit carries on.” ❤️
Well, Mangini didn't compose anything on this record. As much as I love the guy WAY more than Portnoy.
I advise the Vai Drum solo...
How did this song not win a Grammy?...Damn, the level of musicianship is beyond incredible...congratulations gentlemen...this is a masterpiece
Grammy is the dumbest award I honestly would never care for a Grammy if I was a in a band this good
Grammy is politics
Because "Bleeding us to death the new american dream" on they lyrics 🤭 lol
and now 11 years later they won Grammy for The Alien Song 😌
I wish the other two won, good to see they won it for The Alien
That piano solo is true mastery.
Wizardry actually :P
Ever seen rick wakeman play the piano???
@@nicholasditoto6233 And..????
I feel classy just listening to it
Gets me every time I suffer from depression
John Myung is very underrated...he has taken the bass to a whole new level, and sets the foundation for this band like noone else could; he is intelligent and personable. I will always have the utmost in respect and admiration for you John. You're the best my friend
Reminiscing and appreciating MM. Mixed feelings about his departure. The spirit carries on in DT with MP returning and hopefully that doesn't become a negative for all concerned. It would be perfect seeing the DT guys work with MM on side projects that would be different from, but like LTE, PSMS, etc. I hope future collaborations with MM would be welcomed right away and especially if negativity starts being generated because of the change. I wish the best for all involved and welcome MP back, though not as enthusiastically.
Portnoys return has done what I predicted. It brought DT back down from the high they achieved with Mangini. Now, back to vanilla Portnoy fills and his arrogant attitude of superiority. Mangini is 100x the player Portnoy is, I miss Mangini and honestly can't even listen to the new DT single and likely album for that matter. Very disappointing the regression and set back they have taken.
This song has one of the absolute truest meanings of any song nowadays. The people who work hard and strive for better being burdened and taken advantage of by the people who just ride their coat tails and get all whiny and victimized when they can't take advantage of anyone. "Tears fall from the shameless" indeed.
"On" indeed.
Amen Brother!
You do realise it's an antiwar song, right ? it's not complaining about too much taxes etc.
@E.W. Hans fuck off. You do realise this song is not about any of that. Learn some critical thinking before defending the broken systems your country has. Yes I can guess your country just by your comment by how idiotic it is. Instead of sending people somewhere else, fix your own shit, bootlicker.
welcome to 2022
The piano solo, made me cry. The lyrics are all amazing. The synths are thrilling. 10/10 for me.
This goes on from 1992.....

For Real
Mike Mangini is in a league of his own, he's a phenomenal & incredibily talented drummer, period..
I don't care what people say, LaBrie's voice is awesome. That, and this song is truly heartfelt by the band; it really hits you once you just sit and listen to it.
He has a great voice, but live, his voice is so poor... I have seen them 3 times, always the weakest
What are you talking about??? Just saw them last night and LaBrie sounded the best I've heard since the food poisoning. Shit, probably better than I've ever seen! I honestly don't understand this hate. He's still a very, very good singer. He absolutely NAILED the Metropolis part 2 songs as well as "A Nightmare To Remember".
awesome om studio albums, indeed. But have you heard the poor SOB live? Lord have mercy...
nah he tries wayy too hard and it sounds like it.
Great singer, unique voice
I remember my 6th grade math teacher played this during class. It took me forever to find this, thank you Mr. Mendez
That's a cool teacher.
Méndez
You’re lucky my middle school teachers and high school teachers didn’t play any music during class my school days sucked I’m just glad I’m a 37 year old man now
Didn't know Martín Méndez from Opeth was also a math teacher.
@@Jorge-xf9gsJorge
Perfect. My respect to Mr. Portnoy, but Mr. Mangini is an excellent drummer. Petrucci, Rudes, LaBrie, Myung and Mangini, God bless you because of your fantastic music. Every time in home, or even in my car, everywhere I hear you. No words, fantastic, sublime.
Fabian Narvaez Rudess* 😉😂🤣😎
Portnoy is a great songwriter/drummer Mangini is a fucking beast on drums.
I've always liked Mike Portnoy.....But I have to say Mike Mangini is better in my book. Mike Portnoy was quite inconsistent when it came to live shows and playing the songs the way they were written which is what Dream Theater is driven by.
Old Gregg I’m really skeptical
Mangini are a excellent drummer yes, but don't have magic, don't have live, he's a brilliant drummer, a robotic drummer, it's amazing, but i don't feel the feeling good.
This level of skill scares the living shit out of me.
You and I both. I get nightmares from trying to process how they play and understand the math involved. It's such a nightmare.
Yes. It makes me feel very inadequate on guitar. We’re not worthy 🥺
These Berkelee guys are the PHDs of musicianship. Damn!!!
@@gpadepedro ...and didn't even graduate xD
Yeah, a bunch of drop-out losers. What a horrible inspiration to young musicians.
I was always a Portnoy purist. But then when this album came out, Mangini really surprised me. This entire album is golden, and will remain in my top 3 til I die. No other DT album comes close, Octavarium has a few badass songs, but this right here is where its at
Dream Theater is an American Progressive Metal Band that formed in 1985 under the name Majesty by John Petrucci, John Myung, and Mike Portnoy while they attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. They dropped out of school to form the band that would become Dream Theater. The Three original members remained together along with James LaBrie and Jordan Rudess until 08 September 2010, when Mike Portnoy left the band. On 29 April 2011 they hired Mike Mangini as the permanent Drummer. Dream Theater is so talented and they rock us into another world with their awesome guitar riffs, melodies, and vocals. I love them! “On The Backs Of Angels” was on their 11th studio album, A Dramatic Turn Of Events, released on 12 September 2011. The Album debuted at number One in some countries, attained the eighth position on The Billboard 200, it won numberous awards and it’s lead single “On The Backs Of Angels,” was nominated for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance at the 2012 Grammy Awards. The song was written by the band’s Guitarist & Producer: John Petrucci, Bassist: John Myung, and Keyboardist: Jordan Rudess. It was released 29 June 2011 on the RoadRunner Record Label. Lyrics by John Petrucci and Music by Petrucci, Myung, and Rudess. In the song, Dream Theater tried to illlustrate signature sound. The song is played in 3/4 and 4/4 time and it’s introduction has a foreboding arpeggiated guitar pattern that was written by Petrucci. Amazing composition, totally awesome and rocks so hard!🤘🏻😎🎸 I love the mood Dream Theater sets in the song and video! It is completely cool and so dramatic!😈-Moderator-
Susan Waddle thanks for the information
is that why petrucci's signature guitar is known as the majesty?
@@jax1670 Probably, also the "Dream Theater logo" is actually referred to as the Majesty logo by the band
As an older person, I really like this group...the tempo changes are very well done, musical composition is outstanding and the lyrics are chosen carefully...not for stupid listners...kind of a mix between Iron Maiden, Rush & Queensryche
Three influences of DT!
Fates Warning too
That keyboard solo from 5:50-6:17 fucking gets me every time!
Dream Theater never ceases to amaze me. I hope that as long as I'm alive, there will always be music like theirs
i’m 15, so i was four when this song came out but i remember so vividly when my dad first showed me this song. it was my first dream theater song and i still love it to this day.
Like a modern metal version of Rush. Absolutely Beautiful.
Rush are boring.
They are kind of like a mix of Rush, Yes and Iron Maiden.
Dream Theater are awesome even after 31 years they are still awesome
Wow! Unbelievable! 3 years and 2 albums later! Mike Mangini is the new Drummer for Dream Theater, and he's awesome! There's no turning back, so get finally over it, people!!!
Some guy above said that Mangini has no feel.......I kinda wanted to punch him in the face.
Mangini is a SUPERBLY technical drummer - probably one of the most. That video of him trying out for DT show's how technically advanced he is. But I tend to agree with some others: His timing is SO good that he rarely pushes or pulls the beat (push or pull = feel). But do they need a drummer with that kind of "feel"? I think not. Prog is generally complex and exacting.
Will B i find it interesting that people are criticizing mangini for having a lack of feel, when (quite often at least) that kind of overly critical prog listener tends to be more invested in an artist’s technical skill than anything. i know that’s a bit of a generalization, but still.
Check who is the drummer on 2024 bro..I have sad news..🤣
I'm sorry but the again i have to say how great rudess is he is the best keyboard player ever and john pettrutci is electrifying
This is not good... This is fucking awesome!
you don't have to say the Fword I'm 9 years old but your old enough.
It's ''you're'' but don't worry you'll know it when you're old enough.
ARE YOU TALKING TO ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Greg Gibson RES
Greg Gibson-Bailey Omg, Everyone says the fucking F-word on TH-cam!
Mike mangini poured his heart and soul into this album (and the rest)! Great replacement.
One of the better songs of the post Images-era. Subtle main keyboard melody, no overplaying
what i love about DT songs is that i have to listen to them about 5 times to really learn them...not playing them but playing air guitar

I still firmly believe this is the best DT album. Musically and technically. Not to say I’d put it above any of their work, hell no. I still love all of it, but ADTOE still holds a special place in my heart. It was also released during an important part of my life.
Agreed it is by far their best work. Cringe Portnoy fanboys can't accept that. This may be controversial but I think that Mangini fits the band better.
Fr tho this album is much better than Black Clouds
100% agreed. Too bad DT is losing Mangini for Portnoy.
@@k.zn.1283 they are taking bad portnoy because they know that decision will give them more money because most of DT fanbase never liked mangini and the ticket sales went low because of that and its a shame because i loved the mangini era and this album its freakin great
Guys, seriously, this is one of the most fascinating masterpieces I've ever heard, I mean when you're in the mood, and listen to the intro, the voices, it makes you tremble with kind of rage with the keyboard starting, then the music and vocals keep summoning the emotions inside of you, then at 5:08 starts a part which explodes all your feelings, with LaBrie vocals, just awesome. After, at 5:50 the keyboard starts, feeding all your needs, specially when you're depressed (personal experience)..
5:50 Simply beautiful
That bass !!
John Myung is a damn good bass player. I actually like that 12 he uses.
One of their best songs.
I remember when "Constant Motion" and "A Rite of Passage" came out as the first singles from their respective albums. They were cool, but not "oh my God, Dream Theater has done it again!" cool. This song, on the other hand, was "Dream Theater has done it again!" cool.
Listening to this masterpiece for like 20th time in past week, I just can't get enough of them... You gotta love them.
Good lord I love this band!!
I continue to be awed by the musicianship....simply amazing!
I. Can. Hear. The. Bass. Guitar. YEAH!!!
G. C. Kaposvari that makes it truely proggressive, and audible bass
Have you heard John Taylor playing bass with Duran Duran?
😷😷😷
The masterization of this album is phenomenal. Sometimes LaBrie sounds a little weird but the instrumentals are top notch.
As someone who generally dislikes music videos, I thought this one was surprisingly good. I still don't like when vocalists wear sunglasses.
Why? He looks realy bad ass with them =)
I get that, but I think LaBrie rocks them.
Asriel809
U should check some of Tyler the Creator's Music videos. They're amazing and cinematic ... Rock Music videos are generally bad even tho the Music still great
Thank you, Dream Theater, for telling it like it is!
One of the best songs ever written!
this is my most favorite music in the world I can't find the other music that I can find the love
Wow, first song I've heard of these guys, truly awesome \m/
wow really they have only been around more than 20 years....
Hey, it's never too late to discover an awesome band. Check out their album Scenes From a Memory; it's one of the all-time greatest progressive albums out there.
oh man, you are in for a treat :)
32 years
Well 3 years on and their library of songs has not failed to impress me once! I have a weakness for prog, I appreciate everything they've done to develop the genre, I don't think the other band's I love would be half as good without the almighty Dream Theater.
I imagine the conversations between these guys are something like this:
James: "Hey John"
John (P): "Yeah?"
James: "What about Libya? Could we write a song about that?"
John: "You mean a whole album right?"
Amazing guys!
Among many things I love about this band, one thing I do appreciate is how they don't do shortned "music video versions" of their songs for the music video. It's just the nice, full length song in its full glory. Thank you ;)
very true. avenged sevenfold are more than guilty of that and it annoys me
Hate to burst your bubble, but they did do that for Constant Motion. Shaved 2 minutes off the 7 minute song.
That Pre-Chorus is fantastic.
You don't need to listen another songs; you, I and we all need to listen only this song! It's the best song ever !!! Who can say, who can think difference?! Listen this sound, listen this rythm, listen this solo and listen Dream Theater... Loves from Turkey
This song did hit hit me hard; This is... the true art in all what it means. Thank you, Dream Theater
There's nothing better than an epic guitar solo, with the obvious exception of an epic guitar solo preceded by an epic piano solo. THANK YOU DREAM THEATER FOR MAKING PIANO METAL \m/
I just realize this song has pretty much the same musical structure as Pull Me Under, just like Lost Not Forgotten sounds like Under a Glass Moon. I love it anyway though.
this album takes a lot from i&w.
far from heaven is wait for sleep and Breaking all illusion is learning to live.
And Outcry is sort of like Metropolis Pt. 1
YTazzkickr01 Started learning this song on guitar as well as Pull Me Under when I realized the same thing lol. I think they were trying a little too hard to write another hit like Pull Me Under... That being said the song is still pretty sick!
This is the Life is Another Day...?
Wait, Surrounded...?
Queensryche & Dream Theater are the meaning of Progressive Metal !
Opeth and Dream Theater
Tool and DT for me. Queensryche is also good but I don't consider them purely Prog Metal.
No real disagreement, but you really should give Vanden Plas a try - then re-rank them.
@Old Gregg Yeah XD. I don't get when people say LaBrie is awful and the rest of DT is just (insert band name) with (insert band name). Dream Theater kicks serious ass
Opeth and DT for me
Maaaaaaan, the pre-chorus guitar riff makes me shed a tear all the times
The first song I've heard from this band and make me fall in love with this band.
This song and breaking all illusions are probably my fav from this album.

It's a little sad how similar they are. Although this song rips off Pull Me Under's head and shits down its neck.
really, have the same structure as pull me under, but it's good song though...
LOL it's even on the same note
Coming back after a long time of not listening to music or not playing, with the question in my head: "what was so special about them?", I realize oh it's the music. So God damn fucking good man
ive been trying so hard to nail this song on my 5 string bass, its a piece of work trying to get this right
The drumming isn't easy either my friend. It took me years (and the right equipment) to get it right.........sj~13
@@scottyj.2561 i noticed how the drums worked in this song and it goes like this, bass drums follow JM's basslines and hi hats follow JP and JR's melodies somewhere around 2:06 to 2:14. Are my observations right or not?
definitely one of the best dream theater songs ever released in my opinion
I've been listening to DT a long time and this is so awesome. They are truly the "Masters" i could never get tired of them!!
this guys... just... impossibly awesome!!!
one of the best of DT

Song of a LIFETIME. One of my absolute favorites. What an amazing band.
In Dream Theater, 4/4 is odd.

@@The_Archvile truly an enlightened member of society
Because they are scared of 4/4
Come on DT I expect 5/7 time signatures not 4/4 That's not an appropriate time signature
True
A.D.T.O.E is one of the best DT album!!!!!!
Became my favorite album after 12 years of hearing Dream Theater, even though my first favorite albums were Metropolis Pt. 2 and Awake.
complexity and pleasurability is almost impossible to be experience at the same time. especially in music. but Dream Theater's music made such thing possible. wow
I love dream there songs are so intense it's amazing!
That chorus is amazing
This is the REAL COLOUR of DREAM THEATER !!
Combination of electric guitar, keyboard, n unusual beat drum make them GREAT PROGRESSIVE BAND in the world !!! 🤘😎🎤🎸🎹👍👍👍
This song is absolutely amazing
I just love Dream Theater.
thats one of the things i love about dream theater, they dont have to be fast if they dont want to,and they can still smoke most bands out there. even their slower laid back songs have technical parts that are hard to perform perfectly.
Real master class music..
Dream theater music is just another level 🎚️
that whole outtro is why i love dream theater best music
all beautiful !!
god it is awesome to see Mangini in the drums
7:51 Rudess you're a genius madman. Such a crazy riff to play over that heavy guitar stuff.
lets accept the fact that Mangini is not Portnoy but he does his job well enough in his own way, and all of them are musical maestros..
I love this song! I LOVE DREAM THEATER!
Overwhelming at multiple points from sheer beauty of chords and notes sang
From a best Album DT
I discovered them 5 years earlier on Rock Band 2. I don't feel too ashamed, and neither should you.
This is my favorite Dream theater album so far. I feel like it hit the nail when it comes to my taste in melodies, lyrics and overall "aliveness" wich is something I value a lot in music. For me a masterpiece 😊👌🏼✨🎶🎧❤️
