    Steve's Penguin Annex is of greater interest than most people's entire collection.

    What a great hidden shelf! No Way Back and The Recognitions both sound great. My TBR increases with each video.

    Ah, Balzac! Now you are into some books that I really love.
    And Robbie Burns!
    "Scots, wha hae wi' Wallace bled,
    Scots, wham Bruce has aften led;
    Welcome to your gory bed,
    Or to victory! "
    Such treasures in the annex.

    Ah, it does my heart and mind good to see William Gaddis' The Recognitions called one of the six or seven great books of the twentieth century. I would add that his novel JR is the best satire on the corrupting power and enchantment of money and of consumerism written in post-WWII America. I would love a video devoted to your choice of the best 10 novels written in English and published in the twentieth century. I suggest 10 because I do not know how many of Wolff's novels you may want to include, perhaps two, perhaps three? The 21st century so far is an easier task: the Gilead trilogy by Marilynne Robinson.

    The rarified air at the top down to the darkest pit of despair (near the floor); some deserve a second chance to fly ( to the higher shelves).

      I'm thinking a *shudder* Penguin re-organization is in order ...

    Steve - really enjoying these dog-level, deep dives into the annex. I agree about The Recognitions. What are your thoughts on the rest of Gaddis' work?

    • @saintdonoghue
      @saintdonoghue  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it's all brilliant, but I have the rather boring opinion that nothing else he ever wrote touches "The Recognitions" for excellence -

      Thanks - a reread is in order. By the way, the Penguin version you have is selling for $91 new on Amazon - so you might want to put that on a higher shelf.

    That's the exact copy of The Recognitions I want. Do you like the penguin editions of The Recognitions that have the green spine?

    Your Penguin 'annex' should be the jewel of your collection and not in a dungeon. LOL

    • @saintdonoghue
      @saintdonoghue  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      What an odd comment. As though a) I live in a dungeon (since these are in my room), and b) I don't treasure my Penguin Classics, when an entire wall of them is clearly visible in this video.

    • @davidthom7127

      @@saintdonoghue The use of the word dungeon was not meant to sound rude. My word was maybe chosen unwisely but you're starting to become quite aggressive now. I'm not very intelligent so I apologise again if I offended you.

    • @saintdonoghue
      @saintdonoghue  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You call me a liar twice in the comments field of one video, but I'M the one becoming aggressive?

    • @davidthom7127
      @davidthom7127 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@saintdonoghue I did not call you a liar twice. I have though apologised twice and yes you are getting more and more aggressive. I don't think this discussion has gone as well as I meant it to so probably best we both call it a day. I will continue to watch your videos because I think they are wonderful. But I won't post any comments incase I inadvertently offend you again, which I stress again was never my intention.
