This closedown footage was first used on Australia Day 1988, and shows some footage from there. It was continued until 1993, when it began broadcasting 24 hours.
Surprised to see "Hill Street Blues" on the lineup--I had thought that by the 80s the ABC couldn't compete with the commercial networks on American series.
Was it all national continuity/presentation on ABC by 1989 (except for regional variations, I assume)? Seems this announcement/sequence was being played out across all ABC stations, when they could have shown a separate announcement in WA.
WOW!!! Here in the UK all we got was a spinning globe? Is ABC Australia now a 24 Hour broadcast service and how many channels does ABC TV have. Also does ABC TV Australia have any major sports rights, here in the UK it seems all Australian Sports are broadcast by Cricket Channel Nine,AFL Network Seven and NRL Channel Nine and fox? GOD bless
garry simpson G'day Garry ABC is now a 24 hour broadcasting service and has been doing so since the 1990's I think. Today ABC now has four channels which are ABC (main channel), ABC 2 (which broadcasts children's programs from 6 am to 6 pm), ABC ME (formally called ABC 3 and broadcasts youth and teenage programs from 6 am to 9 pm, 10 pm on weekends) and ABC News 24 (news channel for 24 hours). From my knowledge, the ABC doesn't have rights to any sports today which is sad. They used to air local semi-professional football leagues such as the SANFL, VFL and WAFL. Now Network Seven holds the rights to these. I also know that they did used to broadcast the Olympic Games as well as EPL sometime around back in the 80's and 90's. Recently they did broadcast the 2015 Asian Cup which Australia won, that was the last sport I've seen on ABC. But unfortunately SBS, Seven, Nine and Ten have been competitive in terms of sports coverage. I would really like ABC to bring back the local football league coverage.
Here in the U.K. The government has cut the B.B.C. Licence Fee to the bone. B.B.C. 3 is now on-line only. The B.B.C. still has a lot of sports rights. Winter and Summer Olympic Games [In conjunction with Eurosport.] World Snooker E.P.;L Soccer [Highlights only] and Rugby League [U.K. Super League Highlights only]. Here in the U.K. It is B.B.C.1 and 2 4 C Beebies Under 5*s children channel. C.B.B.C. over 5*s The Parliament Channel The one channel Red Button Service [General T.V.] ALSO Wimbledon Tennis and The Aussie Open Tennis. Men*s and Women*s Final Only. The Rest Eurosport. I.T.V. has 4 Television Channels. Channel Four and Channel Five Three each The B.B.C. has five National Radio Stations. Pop Mainstream Music Classic Talk and Sport plus Digital Dependent Radio Stations and 48 Regional Radio Stations.. The most popular PAY T.V. Service is Rupert Murdich*s SKY. The least B.T. Sport. B.T. Sport signed a four year deal for all Aussie Cricket. for the next four years. Average viewing figures 1.000 viewers. Cost of rights to B.T. Sport £40 million. How is FOX Sports getting along in Australia? B.B.C.1 just transmits their news channel through out the night from it*s first day in 1997. Is Tony Abbout still cutting the A.B.C. to the financial bone? STREWTH!! My carer is here. A former Disabled Carer for my late and lovely Mum. Please reply. From The New Forest GOD BLESS!
garry simpson Fox Sports is shit these days I don't have Fox Sports, but they did lose the rights to the EPL and Cricket to Optus who I'm subscribed to. Fox broadcasts the majority of AFL matches which is bullshit. Friday night games are free, there are only two games on Saturday and Sunday the rest are on FOX. Yes dickhead Abbott cut the ABC but he's not our prime minister anymore. We got stupid Malcolm Turnball now......the last thing I heard we lost all of the ABC stores across Australia thanks to our lousy government.
At least you don*t have the U.K. leaving the E.U. and very right wing parties like U.K.I.P. Is Turnball Liberal Party? What is Optius? A bit like S.B.S.? As I have more time. Just to confirm B.B.C. Radio 1 Pop 1 xtra Rap Hip-Hop Alternative. Radio 2 Talk Music over 30 yeas old Radio 3 Opera Radio 4 Talk News Info Radio 5 and 5 LIVE Extra Sport. Talksport and Classic F.M. What happened to Juila Giillard? Did you in Australia have Telletext? From The New Forest. Good night from me and a Good Morning to you! Must watch the Cricket from Australia on B.T. Sport [Even with all those Bloomin Commercials] Some one has too! Channel Nine coverage not as good as it used to be. Keven Peterson good but also working for B.T.Sport. GOD BLESS!
garry simpson Some very good questions Garry. Julia Gillard oh it was relief when she left, she lost in the leadership spill in 2013 and Kevin Rudd was temporary PM, until the elections and peanut Abbott won....yes we used to have a telletext service called Austext provided by the Seven Network. Didn't used a lot but I thought it was really good cos it had the news, weather, lottery, etc. It's a pity it shut down a few years ago....we didn't have colour TV until 1975 that's true. In my belief it's because we were behind in technology back then. We didn't have television in Australia until the 1950's it was all radio before that. Thanks for chatting and have a good night, looking forward to hearing from you soon! :)

Pittsburgh Sea - Closedown (2013)
I wondered why there were fireworks in the clip!

Deutsche Fernsehleute aufgepaßt: SO MACHT MAN DAS!
I didn't know ABC Broadcasted NBA Basketball games?
A well-trimmed game, obviously. Perhaps only the second half, like ESPN in the U.S. used to do with VFL?!
There was a half circle of DEATH
THEY DIDNT SHOW A TEST CARD
Back when the ABC still loved Australia.
Why did WA Have a Differnet Lineup
