I'm glad Mary's marriage made her happy, because it seems like she lived quite an unhappy life, filled with uncertainty due to all the drama surrounding her father. I feel like she probably just wanted a real family, since she was separated from her mother, and went through so many ups and downs with her father. Her marriage day probably brought her such hope for the future; especially hope for children of her own.

Found the dress. A lovely thing. So sad to know how badly the marriage turned out. The best description of it I ever read was in Edith Sitwell'' s 'The Queens And The Hive'. The book was actually about how Queen Elizabeth triumphed over all the rest but the bit about Mary was heart wrenching.

Such a detailed account of her wedding. It must have been such a sight to behold. I'm sure Mary went all out for this occasion, because like so many things in life Mary had to wait for, this day as well. So I'm sure it was a dream come true for her. I can only imagine how she felt to finally be queen and living her dream. She had to have had such high hopes for the future. This had to be one of her most shining moments, and even though later we'd see her as bloody Mary I like to think of her as a beautiful and happy woman at this point. The people must have rejoiced for her as well. They thought their queen was going to be happy, healthy, and have children. So all was well with her on this day. That's how I would like to remember her as well, because I believe all along she had good intentions. She just made a miss step along the way somehow, and she gets a bad wrap for it. But after all her trials and tribulations, this day was a beautiful one in the life of Mary 1 and honestly she deserved to be happy for once. I think it's wonderful she did have her day!!

This seems a bittersweet day. Mary had such a dysfunctional family, so many trauma's: first she's beloved, then she is not. She must've hoped this was a turning of the tide for her; happiness, love and children in her future. So many times it seems that it is not a good thing to know our futures. History seldom offers glimpses of happy endings. Really, Miss Claire, Thank you for staying with us, strong and steady.

It's easy to forget Mary was almost 40 by the time she got married. Who can blame her for being so happy after waiting that long to be married. I'm not sure if she had any marriage prospects during the reign of her younger half brother, Edward VI, but we know she suffered many disappointments in this department during her fathers reign. As the first ruling Queen in England's history, the people must have been very worried about their new "king," who's allegiance was clearly to his father, the King of Spain and the Holy Roman Emperor. I'm sure that her sister Elizabeth noticed how unpopular this marriage was. Although it was the cause of much of Mary's unhappiness, it was probably also the reason why Elizabeth never pulled the trigger on a marriage of her own. She didn't want to end up like her sister, with the people questioning whether she was making her own decisions, or was allowing a foreign husband to make them for her. In my opinion, the success of Elizabeth I's reign was rooted in her decision to stay single, which set the stage for centuries of English Supremacy on the world stage. While this marriage was a disaster for Mary, at least it had some value for England, as an example for her younger half sister of what not to do

I think there was something wrong with the Tudor line. Maybe something genetic in Henry's line. He had enough wives to have had several children but only had three surviving children. Still born babies, a sickly son who didn't make it past 15. His illegitimate son also sickly died in his late teens. Mary basically barren with embarrassing false pregnancies. I believe this may be one of the reasons Elizabeth didn't marry, the prospect of dying during childbirth or exposed as being barren like her sister.

Winchester is so beautiful and with wonderful ancient history attached to it. I went there to see Jane Austen's burial place, and learned some of the history (bones of old kings, a smashed and reassembled stained glass window) but I had no idea that Mary and Philip were married there. I suppose Mary deserved a bit of happiness given her troubled life and terrible death.

Even though we don't have any illustrations that I know of, the written description is so detailed that I could envision it as you spoke. That said, I thought to myself how different England and the forthcoming United Kingdom would have been if Mary's womb had not been barren! That an entire nation and its people's lives would have changed so much if only for a child that was not born. For one thing, we would undoubtedly had had a different dynasty.

This marriage was I'm sure a happy event for Mary in an otherwise very sad life up until this time. But in saying that it was nevertheless a disastrous decision to marry King Philip and her advisors and council should have known better. The English were not all that fond of the Spanish and mistrusted them. Philip didn't spend much time in England with his wife & finally left England for good in 1558, Mary died later that same year after a phantom pregnancy which was possibly symptomatic of ovarian or uterine cancer. Poor Mary a tragic life in many ways?

Thank you, Claire for another interesting and informative video. I've always felt a little sorry for Mary I, so I'm glad she had that short time in which she was happy. I think one reason her marriage went sour so quickly was because she expected too much from it. She appeared to have been a romantic at heart and entered her marriage with high and lofty hopes. If she had viewed it as a political arrangement, which, in fact, it was, she would have most likely not been as devastated when Philip left.
