  • Here's Ten Years After (Alvin Lee-guitar/vocals, Leo Lyons-bass, Rick Lee-drums, Chick Churchill-organ) doing a rehearsal in the studio in Germany, 1969.
They start off with "I can't keep from crying", then go into a blues tune "Woke up this morning" and after a break do "Woke up this morning" take 2. Finally Alvin plays a little to himself.
Remember Animal? Drummer with the muppets? Well, check out Leo Lyons here on bass.
The rest of the band is rather relaxed, laid back.
This was filmed by Wim Wenders, I don't own the material.

Alvin Lee , Johnny Winter two exceptional guitar players that don't get the recognition they deserve. The world of " The Blues " would not be what it is today if not for these two gentleman's contributions. Your welcome 🙏. Peace ✌️.

Except for the fact that Clapton was given the nickname because of the time he took on stage to replace a broken guitar string, not because of his playing style.
In Clapton - The Autobiography (2007), Eric had this to say, "On my guitar I used light-gauge guitar strings, with a very thin first string, which made it easier to bend the notes, and it was not uncommon during the most frenetic bits of playing for me to break at least one string. During the pause while I was changing my string, the frenzied audience would often break into a slow handclap, inspiring Giorgio to dream up the nickname of 'Slowhand' Clapton."

I don't think so cause the great British guitar players that were around then like M Taylor, E Clapton, J Beck and P Green all had an unique style you immediately recognized. A Lee was not able to "destroy" any of them cause they had their own style. I met A Lee in Gothenburg, Sweden in the late 80's at a shady club (Draupner) and in the backroom I sat w my Les Paul and Alvin pointed out that I Had to put oil on the fretboard otherwise the rosewood would start to crack. Interesting video as an example of how most bands of the day actually appeared live in concert. In 1969 I saw Led Zeppelin when they opened for Vanilla Fudge on their first North American tour. This is almost exactly what the show looked like for both bands. A very small stage, Marshall stacks, very little effects, practically zero lighting at all, and nothing but straight ahead music for the wonderful price of $5 (five dollars).

@@JohnSmith-ww2pi The first time I ever saw Eddie play was at the bowling alley in Duarte, California...10 miles from where they lived.
Eddie was using an ES-335 that night.
Me & my brother walked up and talked to Eddie who stayed by his equipment during their break.
I don't think we asked Ediie about Alvin Lee, what he thought about him, then, at that time...but I wished we would have.
Alvin had to be one of guitarist influences on him...that's just a given.
Ed didn't play any Alvin Lee/TYA songs that night.
He/they did do La Grange (ZZ Top) and Nobody's Fault But Mine by Zepplin.
And Runnin With the Devil, which Roth mentioned was an original.
Roth also said they had just learned a new one...Nobody's Fault But Mine, before they played that cover tune.
One of my brother's friends told him they saw Ed play, I'm Going Home at a gig somewhere.
It's too bad he never mentioned Alvin...but that's just the way he was.
About the only guitarist he ever mentioned was Clapton.

In the early 80's they played a small nightclub in my town. I absolutely idolized Alvin, but was too young to go. My sister and a couple friends of mine went & ended up hanging with them all in the parking lot after the show sharing a smoke, (nothing illegal, of course). I was devastated to have missed that, but I did get to see them perform together once & saw Alvin solo two more times. Such an underrated master of the guitar. I guess he gave up on the Fender since it kept falling out of tune from the whammy bar, but he sure made it sing.

Alvin Lee, Jeff, Beck, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Peter Green, Mick Taylor, Albert Lee, Peter Townsend, etc..... Besides Jimi Hendrix, what American guitar players were in that category?
