I played Bolero in my city youth orchestra back in High school. That explains how the melody sounded so jazzy since you said it was based on Jimmy Noone. Wow!
Just another great list! Glad to have seen both Eddie and Ken perform. My personal favorite is Paquito because I love his Latin style and hope to see him play. Appreciate hearing about your association to some of these giants of Jazz. Happy Holidays to all.
Both videos are extremely well done-thank you very much, but i would also like to hear recorded examples of the actual artists, especially those who are more rarely heard, such as Jimmie Noone, or Lester playing clarinet. Other names for future lists- Artie Baker, Peanuts Hucko, Don Byron.
New Orleans music is defined by the inclusion of the clarinet - again, your list is spot-on. However, I'd add #21 - Pee Wee Russell - check his album, "Ask Me Now".
Great suggestion! Dolphy is one of the best. He could be on the alto, clarinet and bass clarinet list! Oh wait, did I just give away one of our future videos? hehe
@@PeterAndWillAnderson Absolutely, I know Vince Giordano's orchestra very well. Although I have never had the opportunity to meet him personally, but I know several musicians who have played with him. Thanks for mentioning
Thank you for answering me. Darnell Howard is with Earl Hines at Club Hangover in Sanfrancisco in 1957. I like his version of I’ve Found a new Baby. Howard was a violin player in the beginning. It has Been written tjat you Can hear this in his solos. May be you agree :-) He was also known for his excellent playing very high notes in fast tempi.
Using Virtuosity and Mastery of the instrument as the criteria where, on your list, would you slot the two classical clarinetists: Reginald Kell and Martin Frost.
Thanks, really enjoy these,If there will be more a few more players you might want to think about could be Jack Maheu, Chuck Hedges, Vic Ash,and Louis Cottrell
I guess those players are not known too well.Jack Maheu played with the Dukes of Dixieland, and many others.Check his solo on "Washington and Lee Swing"with Ernie Carson on You Tube.
Great suggestion. I very much agree. He will have to go on the next list, although he could easily be in the top one. He's one of the first real improvisers in jazz :)
A great clarinetist who is practically unknown here, is Paulo Moura from Brazil - here a great example - what I consider to be jazz if it had not been born in New Orleans - th-cam.com/video/qLjpwJiKdUs/w-d-xo.html
Paquito,Peplowski, TOP jazz clarinetists ? You cannot be serious. Both excellent instrumentalists but utterly mediocre jazz players without a scrap of individuality. Presumably you've never heard of superb JAZZ players like Irving Fazola,Hubert Rostang,Omer Simeon,Pee Wee Russell,Kenny Davern Sandy Brown. Much more listening required before you compile your next list.
This is “round 2,” you can check our top 10 “round 1” here. th-cam.com/video/zVptNnYMOsY/w-d-xo.html Those are excellent names you listed. I’m not familiar with all of them so I will check them out. When compiling the list, the player’s instrumental ability was definitely a factor in the outcome. But as you’ll see, many, like Lester young, made it because of the style and individuality. I’m glad we have such knowledgeable viewers like you! Let’s agree to disagree :)
Doreen Ketchens has an amazing sound
She does! I admire her and I also follow her on her TH-cam Channel.
The way you play screams PASSION! Inspired! Thank you
I played Bolero in my city youth orchestra back in High school. That explains how the melody sounded so jazzy since you said it was based on Jimmy Noone. Wow!
Ravel was one of first jazzers! Well...not technically, but I think so in many ways. Love Bolero.
Fabulous sir. Enjoyed it so much. God bless you. Bill. UZk
Pete Fountain's tone always made me envious. i also loved his improv skills.
Right on!
Yeh ..great ...thought he would 'swing' anything though
Just another great list! Glad to have seen both Eddie and Ken perform. My personal favorite is Paquito because I love his Latin style and hope to see him play. Appreciate hearing about your association to some of these giants of Jazz. Happy Holidays to all.
Paquito is truly a gifted instrumentalist. He plays with so much ease. Effortless mastery!
@@PeterAndWillAnderson This is wonderful! What is your particular clarinet set-up?
@@theblueriverjazzbandmusic2540 I use D’Addario classic 3 reeds with a Portnoy mouthpiece.

Thank you very much! Buffet R13, Vandoren M13 Lyre, Ddarrio Reserve Classic 3.5.

Bob Wilber, Ken Peplowski and Paquito D'Rivera -- three of my faves!
Me, too!
We love Eddie Daniels!!! Glad you added him!! ❤️🙌
How the hell could anyone dislike this?!
Some people have strong opinions hehe
Acker Bilk
New Orleans music is defined by the inclusion of the clarinet - again, your list is spot-on. However, I'd add #21 - Pee Wee Russell - check his album, "Ask Me Now".
Yes, Pee Wee made it into our Round 3 video
What about Eric Dolphy? Thank you for the list! Excellent playing as well!
Great suggestion! Dolphy is one of the best. He could be on the alto, clarinet and bass clarinet list! Oh wait, did I just give away one of our future videos? hehe
I suggest George Probert, who played clarinet and soprano sax with Kid Ory and Firehouse Five Plus Two, among others.
I will check them out! Thanks
glad to see Pete Fountain on the list!!❤
i can't believe pete fountain wasn't in the first one considering he's in the musical legends park on bourbon street
Thanks for chiming in. Hard to choose the ranking for all these players but Pete Fountain was certainly up there. Could have been in the top 10.
Do a bass clarinet video too. Plus contrabass clarinet. Thanks.
YES, that is a great idea :)
Great video, congratulations Peter and Will Anderson! Greetings from a jazz clarinetist on the other side of the pont.
Thanks, Giordano. Your first name is same as one of the greatest jazz bandleaders ever, Vince Giordano. I hope you've had a chance to check him out!
My wife is Irish. I'm over on that side of the pond very frequently.
@@PeterAndWillAnderson Absolutely, I know Vince Giordano's orchestra very well. Although I have never had the opportunity to meet him personally, but I know several musicians who have played with him. Thanks for mentioning

I'm a "Darnell" fan now! th-cam.com/video/Xw9A1zMfIuM/w-d-xo.html
I would've put anat cohen somewhere on there. And I know that this list isn't bass clarinetists but I would've loved a mention of eric dolphy.
Dolphy! Definitely could have been on this list. Thanks for your input.
Thank you for the lovely to are sharing with the world! Should one be a young clairenitis, should you have any recommend works to practice?
Learn anything by Benny Goodman or Sidney Bechet :)
Jimmy Guiffre cannot be missed if you want to include the clarinetists influence on todays clarinetists.
Just found him in your list #3. Fine.
Using Virtuosity and Mastery of the instrument as the criteria where, on your list, would you slot the two classical clarinetists: Reginald Kell and Martin Frost.
Reginald Kell way at the top! I don't know Martin...

@@brucenicholls854 I know the Dukes of Dixieland. I'll have to take a closer listen
I think the best clarinetist is Anat Cohen
We know Anat! Hard to include them all
Albert Nicholas? He is one of my favourites. 😊
Nice!
Big omission PEANUTS HUCKO.Superior to many on your list.
You could be correct. He was up there, too.
Where are the women? Anat Cohen? DoreenKetchen?
I'm a fan of Doreen's Channel and have watched many of her videos. Know Anat, too. Hard to fit them all in the lists
@@PeterAndWillAnderson So, hopefully they will be on your next list :)
How about Leon Rapollo? Great player, short lived, but fabulous technique for his time.
Great suggestion. I very much agree. He will have to go on the next list, although he could easily be in the top one. He's one of the first real improvisers in jazz :)
For me it's still Benny Goodman, the complete clarinettist.
Like!!!
Peanuts Hucko, Allan Vache, Tim Laughlin for round three?
Great add ons

pee wee russell?
Great suggestion. Hard to include them all, but you have a great point.
Still no John Carter or Don Byron ??
Don Byron, I like!
Use the original sound of clarinetist 😍🙏🏻
kind of a dud list in my opinion without kenny davern...
Good point. It was hard to fit them all in...
