    Hi, Wayne
    Phrae is a great sleepy big town. Married a lady 42 years ago from there. We travel back every year to visit family, you're right, there's no taxis or grabs or big shopping Mall,
    Keep the blogs coming.

    Thanks for sharing! Phrae looks like a nice litle town. No farang around is a very good sign in my eyes. To live there it would force one to learn Thai, which is a good thing anyway.

    • @WalkAboutWayne
      @WalkAboutWayne  3 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Yes, it's nearly a perfect town for anyone who likes this style of living. I really like these small towns. Language would be easier here as forced to learn, as you mentioned.

    I am in the exact location only a day or so after you posted. Surreal. I think i even walked past the sewing lady and she gave me the "farang" look

    I love the sleepy little town vibes. The ones that are close enough to a big city - to visit. The ones that are just big enough to have key amenities. Korat fits the bit for me.

    • @WalkAboutWayne
      @WalkAboutWayne  3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      These small towns attract me also. I agree, they need to be close enough to a big city. I'll have to visit Korat one day.

    Phrae is a real gem. We moved here 7 years ago from Chiang Mai and would never go back. The city is charming. They have preserved the old city within the wall. You can see authentic Thailand. The mountains and scenery are spectacular and very close to the city. Please stop and see us at SuanGlangNa. I will feed you a coffee or beer and we can share Northern Thai experiences. Jerome Wood

    Another good one, mate! Loving those smaller towns!
    Maybe it is time to pack up your bags & start considering longer stays, perhaps a month or two, in some of the places you have already scouted out. See what the local hotels and hostels say about discounts for extended stays. It might even help you improve your Thai language skills, by staying out of Chiang Mai and other tourist-infested places for even longer periods.
    A couple of days is really not long enough to judge a place adequately for retirement. From personal experience, I would want to stay at least 3-6 months, before making any long-term plans, and at least a year or two, before even considering settling down on a more or less permanent basis. At the very least, you need to experience a full year's worth of good & bad weather.
    Just my two baht of opinion, though. Waffle on! :)

    • @WalkAboutWayne
      @WalkAboutWayne  2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That would be further down the road mate, when I'm a little older. Chiang Mai area for the near future. For sure you would need longer if you wanted to move somewhere. I can get a good early feeling in one day though. I'll know if I like somewhere straight away. But like you said, then come back again and dive deeper. I probably wouldn't need to stay somewhere 3 to 6 months to know if I liked it though.
      Lot's of things to consider before I would move anywhere. First impressions of a place means alot though. That's all these quick trips are about, to get that early feeling of places Cheers

    Loved that lady inviting you in and chatting away in Thai, no idea what she was saying but there was the ideal opportunity to whip out the free translation app such as google app and hold a conversation. Next time I'm over there with the missus and on her farm where it is unchartered territory by the Western world and pretty much nobody our age speaks English, I will be using one for sure. Anyway love these unchartered towns and thanks for taking us all there with you. Stay at any of these places for any length of time and they'll be trying to marry you off 😂🤣😂 Love all that art work there too. Nice one Wayne 🤩

    • @WalkAboutWayne
      @WalkAboutWayne  2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Someone on here translated it, something about her daughter married an English guy and she offered me coffee. Lovely lady, I knew she was saying about the shop and coffee but not the rest. I can't stand using google translate anymore, only when it's upmost needed. It takes away the natural meet. If I really can't understand something I will. Translate has helped me out of some tricky situations though. Cheers mate.

    Good one Wayne, fun and almost like stepping back a few decades to the old Siam I've all but forgot. And really what do you have in Chaing Mai (other than distractions) you wouldn't have there? And if you had a nice place on a bit of land and a nice sewing lady to keep you stitched up it, maybe that would be the better deal.

    Thing about these cool small towns is if you like them you need to take advantage now. Spend time there. Enjoy what they offer.
    Won't be long til these become big and noisy.
    Look how Chiang Mai has overdeveloped since you first landed there. Hesitate and lose.

    • @WalkAboutWayne

      Yeah I would agree with sone of that Robert, once these small towns have been Faranged, it will be all gone. I have to be honest and agree that Chiang Mai has changed also. It’s not the same city as when I arrived.

    I think you are going to be spoilt for choice when your retirement comes. But the good people of Chiang Rai are expecting you to pick them. We never stayed in Phrae but spent a lot of money buying teak furniture and lots problems from one shop which took months to sort. But there are so many nice cities heading south and rarely will you met a Westerner . Keep up the good work always enjoy breakfast with you on my laptop.
