      In my oppinion Windows and Linux shouldn't be "married" together. They are different things. Virtualisation is ok but not that.

    For the ones currently having issues installing the (sudo apt install kali-win-kex -y)... First type the command in Kali (sudo atp update) then (sudo atp upgrade) then enter (sudo apt install kali-win-kex -y) It will Fix it 100%! Credit to someone else that solved it. For the people that want to use this for 'hacking'. For now its not possible to have a reverse shell or a small webserver of some sort through wsl2. Unless you do it with port forwarding, but thats just messy. Virtual machines are still the way to go

    • @nonlinearsound-001
      @nonlinearsound-001 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Absolutely. At the moment there is no possibility to set the network adapter into bridge mode so that the WSL2 VM gets a local IP address. So basic tasks like scanning your local subnet using nmap is not possible. Use a hypervisor as long as MS doesn't give you direct network access for your WSL VM. You can then connect to it using VNC to work with its desktop environment.

    2:23 - Exit BIOS saving changes: just hit the F10 key
    2:59 - Launching a program with elevated privileges: Ctrl + Shift + Enter
    [works for Search (Win + S) results, things entered into the "Run" (Win + R) dialog (both programs and commands) and in the Explorer (Win + E)]

    What a story....
    First.. Windows was lonely, didn't have anyone to talk to until Microsoft introduced Windows to Linux, Linux and Windows had a pretty good relationship, they talked to each other, they wrote to each other, messaged each other day and night, until they found each other in a very good relationship that they are now in love.
    Their relationship just got stronger which got them engaged to each other that they are now super connected, and with that, therefore came WSL to gift each other after they had a pretty good date, which lead to an even stronger relationship and Windows just got older which turned it from 10 to 11, and they've been married happily ever after... Got their own things, Windows can now run Linux and Linux can change to look like Windows, and they have made a ton of babies now and having something which is called WSLg... One called Kali, one called Ubuntu, and so on and so fourth... You can now interact with them on Windows and they will act just like themselves.
    And they lived happily ever after,
    The End.

    I would strongly recommend against installing this if you plan on using VirtualBox in addition to this. You will end up breaking all of the virtual machines in VirtualBox and even uninstalling WSL won't help you. If you do this anyway and you want VirtualBox to work again, you will have to open "Turn Windows features on or off" from Control Panel (or just search for it) and then turn off everything related to virtualization and WSL.
    WSL is far from a replacement of running a virtual machine, and some stuff won't work in this environment.

      hyper-v does not decrese overall performance, the only downside is that you cant really use any other virtualization if you enable it. Virtualbox will run terrible slow, to make it fast again you have to turn off hyper-v but then wsl2 wont work. Other then that there is no issues and perrformance is great. Keep in mind that wsl2 is not really ment to be a secure layer. its mostly intended for developing and testing purposes

    Just hold LShift while pressing "Reboot" on Windows 10/11. Not Shutdown, Reboot. You´ll get sent to some blue screens, that pprompt you on what you want to do, and among these options is the Startup to BIOS.

      I'd say most likely both. I know that I run Win 11 on my desktop since the beta came out on day 1, but to learn it before it becomes the new norm. Then on my other machines Windows 10 for now. Win 11 still has some bugs but I suspect they will be worked out in the next 6 months or less hopefully. Just like Windows 10 when it first came out. I still miss right clicking on the task bar to get to the task manager, hopefully they will bring it back in a future update.

    • @Koddunyam
      @Koddunyam 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      the major drawback is : you are actually not using linux :D joke beside if you wanna learn linux its a good thing but if you want to use linux fully as an Administrator it's just like a VM. As an Linux Administrator I can tell you, it doesn't matter if you use Windows or Linux. They are just Operation Systems. Linux is free and Open Source and if you are really good you can manage the whole system. Windows is paid and you can't actually play/change with the system data.
      Btw the drivers won't have any issues on WSL. Like I said its just a build in VM. And if you just want to learn Linux for Kali Tools stay on Windows and use WSL2. You also can still write Bash Scripts and run them too. (Bash Script is a must know for a ethical hacker. Still my opinion tho.)

    Another kick ass video man, appreciate it. With the VPN segment you should mention the 14 eyes. Extremely important when picking your VPN. Which by the way PIA is a non 14 eyes VPN which is perfect. (It means the U.S. and other countries can not get the data from the VPN provider).

    If anyone gets wonky graphics when running the Linux apps in GUI after installing, you just need to restart WSL. In an elevated command prompt window (not a Linux window), type wsl --shutdown and then re-open the affected Linux GUI app, it should work properly after that.

  • @kylepizzolato308
    @kylepizzolato308 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can enter an elevated command prompt easier. Windows key + R, type cmd, and press ctrl + shift + enter! Boom

    Just want to say if you've never used Linux, and are frustrated with Windows/MacOS I'd still recommend using a VM with a distro like CentOS or Manjaro just to ease your way into Linux. Taking the dive and reformatting with the latest version of Ubuntu or Linux is going to end up being a challenge for most folks.

    I'm a bit irritated with TH-cam. For some reason I never got a notification for this video.
    Now I have to go back in and see what else I missed that was very interesting.
    As for WSL, is kali operating just as it would on a standalone Linux system?
    For instance, has anyone heard about a network adapter card that works on the Linux system , but doesn't work on the Windows WSL system?
    I'm going to give it a go either way because it just occurred to me more devices might work since you have Windows Linux "married"😆.
    I had a KILLER (intel) card in my laptop that I thought for sure was going to work , but it didn't.

    So trying this out on win10 as apose to using vbox or vm workstation. Seems legit so far. Only thing prior to installing win-kex be sure to run sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade -y or it will fail the install due to dependencies.

      I am jk, normally networking is enabled by default I didn’t have to do anything. You could check /etc/resolv.conf in the linux vm and see if things look alright there. Or maybe share more information about the error you are getting so that we can help you.

    Here are some problems I met after I played with WSL2.
    1. Some advanced software such as TotalView for parallel debugging has not yet supported wsl2.
    2. The visualization of some IDEs such as eclipse open in WSL2 also has some display issues. (size and resolution can not change)
    3. Another disadvantage for WSL2 is that the read and write speed across the system is really slow(off course it can be solved through copy the entire project from windows to $$WSL2).
    The worest problem that I had is that some times the break points in IDEs like CLions in WSL2 or other virtual machien based on hyper-v tech just did not work. I have retried my project on ubuntu OS, the break points get hit perfectly. I could not figure out the reason, but I guess GDB through terminal might still work.
    Therefore, after struggling in WSL2 for so much time. I suggest that for parallel programming work (except those ussing microsoft mpi), a dual boot or pure linux OS is still necessary.
