  • Here I cover a new plant that I added this year which is the Imbe or African mangosteen. Imbe or Garcinia livingstonei is a relative of the mangosteen and is more doable in our climate in the Phoenix Arizona area (9B). Imbe originates in Africa and is described as a unique fruit with notes of apricot, citrus, and mango. Sound delicious? Come learn more about this plant and how I am growing it in the Sonoran desert.

I got all of mine from cocotropics as well. Amazing how your food forest has grown. It's beautiful

Imbe is one of my favorite fruit. I'm in Mesa, Arizona. I have 8 Imbe plants growing. 4 in ground and 4 in containers. I planted these from seeds May 2021. Original planted 21 seeds and all 21 seeds grew. The fruit very juicy and tasted like a mix of apricot, mango, and tangerine. Thanks for the video. More people need to know about this fruit. My cousin has an Imbe that is about 6 feet tall.

My seedling planted in Arizona 9b in 2004 has not had any weather problems except no blossoms yet. Always looks very healthy. Grafting attempt seemed very difficult and failed. Many exotic fruits fail to produce fruit here even when blossoming due to heat and low humidity. Seeds sprout nicely. Been waiting a long time.

Wow--almost 20 years is a long time. I was hopeful this plant would be able to fruit in our climate reading it grows in a wide range of climates and soils. Perhaps it needs more winter protection in your yard to support blooms in spring. If the winter knocks it back each year, it may not have the energy to flower

Trade Wind Fruits sells seeds but appears to be out. Perhaps eBay or Etsy has seeds available for purchase.
