  • The Spyderco Urban is an EDC knife which is designed to help people cope with silly, fear-driven lawmaking. Although it's probably not the best choice if you're not having to jump through legal hoops, it's a pretty darn good EDC choice if you are.

Great vid. Thanks. I live in the UK and I love mine (in Elmax). I used to own a UKPK which is also an excellent knife. One hand opening is so convenient for those quick little tasks; and yet having a spydie hole means none of the blade length is lost to thumbstud placement when gutting a baguette or splitting an apple. I love that this is a sturdy little knife. Stout blade and firm backspring being two of features I look for in a UK edc. Sometimes it has been pressed into harder use as it was the only knife I had. I was grateful of the extra heft. Granted it has those unusual Spyderco looks, but it's an iconic design from an iconic company. If you live in the UK and want the best modern folder available under £100 that isn't a multitool the Urban and UKPK has got you covered. I'd love if they made them in different colours (earth brown handles anyone?). In fact the only gripe with this knife is the price. Despite being built in europe it costs around £80 ($100) in the UK. Far more than the average man in a UK street is likely to want to pay for a slipjoint to pop in the pocket and forget about until needed. For those not into high end steels I'd recommend the Bird Tern as an alternative at $48 (£35). Saying that, I own two Urbans as they are such good knives I wanted one as a spare. I am a knife person after all ;-)

I love my UKPK. But I picked one of these up because K390 was an option and its does 99% of my cutting tasks. The blade stock is a bit thick but its ground super thin behind the edge. Nice review as always Nick 😁

Great video! I love my Urban. I have it in my collection with the Cat (BD-1), and the Chicago. I really like slip joint knives so I don't mind that it doesn't lock. I also have the UKPK but this knife fits perfectly in the watch pocket of my jeans so I often carry this as my "sheeple" knife in addition to a larger knife like a Native 5 lightweight.

The N690 is closer to VG10 steel due to the cobalt (fine grain, edge retention) than 440C.
Thus, to me, this is about a .25 inch longer Dragonfly2 non locking offering.
The blade is thicker, .11 compared to .09
The hole is out front instead of half/half like the Dragonfly.
    Price point is very similar.
I do appreciate all you do for the community.
Education is a great thing, a knowledgeable buyer even more so.
I have been considering a N690 knife, the Steel Will Mini Gekko in macarta handle.. just have a tough time paying $169 for a VG10 steel type of knife.
Maybe, one day, this will come across your desk, if so... would be most interested in the Shabazz take, that would be a beautiful thing.

Had this as an EDC for over 5 years, fantastic for UK. Ergonomics are epic, sharpens very nice with lansky kit, holds an edge for relitvly long for the steal. Easy use with one hand and a large cable tie trick on the spydy hole makes it easier, for the workplace if it's not appropriate to fully open, (UK I know!) you can open it one stage cupped in the hand for opaning boxes etc.. Had the Byrd version for a while and also found that to be good just did not have the edge retention or rust resistance

  • @pmolqrcd3370

I like this one better than the ukpk for the simple reason that the liner/spacer continues the full length of the blade, as well as the fact that it's a little chunkier. It's a good mix between the ukpk and the squeak.

  • @Cujobob
    @Cujobob 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I received a version in K390 and really enjoy it. My only gripe would be the sharp spine. The ergos are fantastic for such a small knife (it's not a full sized knife). I actually like the blade stock and find since the blade is ground rather thin, it gives it a more durable feel. Because it's a slipjoint, it's easy to use quickly and put away, another EDC win. Many people love the Dragonfly, but I haven't been one to fall for it completely, this is a much better design in a knife maybe just a bit larger in pocket. At $70 or so, this knife in K390 is a steal.

Nice review. I have one of the older versions made in Japan. I think you would like this one better. Seems to be a step up in materials and quality. It comes with G10 handles. The blade is thinner, only a tad thicker than a delica. No sharp edges, except the cutting edge, and the jimping is standard Spyderco, not too sharp and not too dull. It does cost almost twice as much, around $95 if I remember correctly. I guess they made a few sacrifices to get the price down to the mid-$50's.

That's the thing that puts me off K390. Not very corrosion resistant to start off with and I've heard it's an absolute pain to sharpen.
I get what you are saying about buying any UK legal Spydercos though; they seem to offer more UK legal options than any other manufacturer, but choices are still limited so buying them all is actually an attainable goal :p

    Hello Nick,
Between Dragonfly and Urban, which one would you take? I have a G10 Dragonfly 2, and even though I have relatively small hands, it's cramping my wrist. Urban handle looks a bit bigger to hold. Been looking at Lil' Native also, but its handle is very thick and square shaped (I do have a Native 5 Salt which I really want to love, but it's just thick in the pocket.
Occasionally I take the Pingo which I find perfect in the pocket, and this is mainly why I'm looking at this.

What are your impressions? I adore this little thing, and the deep dark red scales look great (friendlier than black) and really lock the wee knife in one's hand.
The CPM S90V seems to really keep an edge well too, I did a bit of gardening yesterday, digging into dirt with the Urban to rehome some plants, and despite little jagged stones all over the place, it could still push-cut paper afterwards. I really should still use a trowel in future though!

I’m looking at getting the Spyderco Manix lw in s110v, but I like to stop my blades everyday to avoid having to remove extra steel , but from what I have heard s110v needs to have a toothy edge and I was wondering if I can still strop everyday ? I have a block stop one side black and one side green compound called flex stop I believe. And I also have S30V military and if that an be stropped everyday also because I have heard that needs a toothy edge as well. Probably sounds like a ridiculous question but most of my blades are vg 10 , so don’t really know how to go about this tough super steels, cheers Zac.

Hey Nick - my son got the UKPK delivered a few days ago and it's a cracking little knife. In your disassembly video (where I should be asking this question, sorry) you showed us the 'washer-hump'. If that was sanded flat, do you suppose a brass/bronze washer of similar dimensions could be used more effectively instead?

The laws can be a bit crazy and misdirected. I have a series of small legal knives for business trips, especially overseas. A son of mine is going on a business trip and I almost forgot to mention the legal issues with knives. One has to look at all possible areas during travel. Sometimes, state lines are not clear and jurisdictions and have a mixed set of problems. In Kansas, where I currently reside, they loosened the knife laws, but initially forgot to make the law preempt local restrictions. That was fixed. Some states may not be structured the same way. In Kansas, I can have and carry any knife in any way, but not throwing stars. Also, federal lands are a patchwork and they have their own laws.

  • @terrywho22

Excellent review. Since this knife was made to accommodate more stringent knife laws, I'm not sure why Spyderco went with a 2.61 inch blade rather than keeping it below 2.5 inches. That slightly greater than 1/10 of an inch difference in blade length has zero difference in terms of functionality yet would allow it to be a legal carry almost anywhere (rather than being "almost legal.") My other complaint is that the thumb ramp is quite steep and not all that usable. I'm in agreement with just about everything else that NS mentions. Seems like an almost perfect knife that misses on just a few (but none-the-less) important points.

However, you could carry a 7 cm. fixed blade, which people who shouldn't be carrying knives in the first place was doing.

Yup. The laws are thankfully changed now to somewhat better. You can have a knife on you, folder or fixed blade up to 12 cm, if you can give a reasonable purpose. However if in an area with lots of people, like a concert, football match or similar, you can't have any knife not even a Gerber zipper attachment of about 1,5 cm.
