Its both. I'm sure that chinese people know about people from different parts of the world. Because they've put themselves in most corners of the world. Why would she ask such a question 🤔. There is no excuse for this. Times have changed so much. If I had said why is your eyes like that it would be called asian hate. I am no more visibly different than they are. The world is different. All kinds of people exist in it. With the social media don't tell me that she has never seen a dark skin person before. Slave mentality. White skin is beautiful and if you're dark skin then you must be dirty because you don't bath. She probably wasn't trying to he rude but by now she should know how to be respectful to other cultures as this young lady wasn't. When people do this they need to be put in their place by means of education. She should've schooled her and I wouldn't bother with the makeup. They've been doing this for a long time. And now there's talking about asian hate. But what about their hate. I know this wasn't about hate. Just saying.

No, China is actually pretty diverse, they have large land, different ethnic groups have been on the land since ancient times. The skin colour and feature also more varied than other east asian countries. You might confuse them with Korea where the land is small, basically only have 99 % of korean ethnicity and was very closed off until recent years. So their comments here were just plain rude, there are other beauty shops who would treat her better. But when blackface is still constantly being shown in The Spring Festival Gala, which is like the biggest event in China shown by the State TV broadcast throughout China and across the world even as recent as last year, I think it would take a looooong time for racial insensitive comments to go away from the land so it s fine to call them out constantly and vehemently.

As a Chinese person I would like to say that I'm so so sorry about that girls behavior. Even though I'm Chinese myself, I tend to be afraid of Chinese people, because (some) Chinese people tend to be a bit blunt and straightforward to the point it's kind of rude. So its hard to hide how hurt you are sometimes. (You did a great job staying calm and strong when she said such rude things by the way. I however was not that resilient 😔) One day I just went to visit my grandparents in China and they had a friend over. And the moment their friend looked at me. They said why does your granddaughter have such big eyebags? She looks so tired. And then the conversation carried on like nothing happened. And the moment the guy left the house I burst into tears. So, for anyone reading this I hope you remember to stay strong if you are being treated this way, and stand up for yourself! Don't let people mistreat you! And if your saying rude things without a care, please remember to think about how your words can affect others. Thank you for reading my comment! ❤️ Stay strong guys :)

I experienced this several times when I lived in China. Questions are insensitive but I do believe it stems from ignorance and curiosity most of the time. However, that shower comment, no. She was being rude. To imply that someone has poor hygiene is considered rude. She said that because she doesn’t see this black women as human on the same level that she is. To imply that someone is black because they don’t clean themselves. Cleaning in necessary for all humans. Our cleaning rituals vary from culture to culture, but we all must clean ourselves to remain healthy. We all clean unless we lack access and/or choose not to for some reason.
When people ask why your hair is so long? How can your hair be so beautiful? Same thing. You are human and hair growth is a human function. That’s why. Therefore, we’re all capable of growing hair UNLESS there is some type of abnormality or circumstance.

Seeing a person of darker color and ethnicity would be shocking to them since they've never encountered them. Thats why when people raised in rural areas visit big cities in China and they spot a person that looks "different" from them, they would take pictures. Also building up racist, ignorant, and uneducated stereotypes like the one the chick said.

As a Chinese person, the off cam makeup attendant was straight up rude. Might not be ill intended, but very rude. The excuse of China being a very homogenous country with few foreigners in the comment section isn't a valid excuse.
As like OP said, there's a lot of dark skinned Chinese people in China, which are even more present in southern China. Furthermore, it's not like black people doesn't on Chinese social media or that black celebrities doesn't exist in China. And it's not like Chinese people don't know asking people if they are taking shower or not bc of their skin color is rude or not. No excuse at all, from any angle.
I'm glad MUA said to that person, "don't talk nonsense. We're not the same race. They're black, we're yellow." or that the makeup attendant shouldn't ask this rude question in the first place.
I'm also amazed how OP handled it so gently with so much patience. I was even more amazed by OP taking her time to talk abt science to that makeup attendant.

Girl, you are so beautiful, graceful, and classy. I could not believe that comment about your skin color…😳 I was mortified. I commend you for your patience as I would not have been so kind. 😂 She did do a great job with your make up on the flip side.

You are so beautiful and I think the makeup did a good job of taking your natural features and glamming it up a bit! You looked so good at the end.

"50 shades of animal ", Whatt??? Racism is so casual in China. How dare that woman compares you to an animal 😤😔🤧😳 Busola! You need to counterract racist tropes like these. You should challenge and teach them that Africans are not animals as they are taught. I am so livid.

As an anthropology major, I would have LOVED to have the opportunity to explain to someone why I look different than them!! If they are so bold to ask you those questions in an intimate setting, then they may also be so bold to take that information back and share it with others in their circle, who may then go on to share it with their friends and families, so on and so on. It doesn't take much to share the story of how humans migrated from Africa, and as they went away from the equator the melanin in their skin adapted, as did their physical features (nostrils/noses, eye shape, bone structure, body types), to fit the environments. It took thousands of years, but this is why people look so different. So, kind of? In a way it does have something to do with the sun, but over thousands of years and so many generations that you can't fathom. And you can also share that you all have a common ancestor, so you are related if you go back far enough, that will REALLY blow their mind! People need to understand the kinship we have to each other, and how we are not so different, so we can stop seeing each other as "us vs them" and see it more as a garden of flowers, different looking, but the same.

hey! im chinese, and first of all, your verbal chinese is very good, you sound so natural! super good for living in china for 4 years :) also, wow, that makeup attendant is seriously ignorant and rude. unfortunately a lot of people are like that in our country. sometimes they genuinely don't know genetics well, but often times, they know and it's unfortunately just plain racism. they don't care. many local schools don't even teach much about racism. it's really sad, but people are changing and getting better (the makeup artist herself even educated the attendant and she was much better!). you handled it so well honestly, you didn't even have to be so polite to her comments but you were.
btw the makeup artist did a good job :)
