  • VISIT THE WORLD'S MOST REMOTE INHABITED ISLAND - FANNING ISLAND OR FANNING ATOLL (TABUAERON) Remote Tabuaeran known in English as Fanning island or Fanning atoll is in the central Pacific Ocean and part of the Republic of Kiribati. The Fanning island population is approximately 1,950; all live in eight tiny villages around a lagoon. Language is Gilbertese, but English is widely spoken, too. There is a dirt road that completely circles the lagoon around Fanning. There are small dirt trails running in every direction from that road. You will not find any traditional stores on the island - no Academy Sports or 7-11s. There are locals that are willing to sell you certain trinkets and American dollars are generally happily accepted. Based on two trips to Fanning island - in 2016 and 2019, I can confirm this island is a hidden travel gem. I believe two cruise lines visit Fanning island - once each - every 2-3 years.

    How does Fanning "discover the island" that already has people living there?

    Hi Joe! We'll be sailing down to Fanning in about two years. I'd love to talk with you about it. Do you have an email address? Thanks!

      Sure, of course. I would love to chat about Fanning. Likely you will visit on a cruise ship: Crystal or NCL? The ships arrive at 8am and tender to the one tourist dock in Fanning. The entire island turns out to play music, dance, sit for photos and sell trinkets. I would visit the church, school, housing areas and just walk around as much as tie permits. There are trails that will take you from village to village.
      Have fun.

      @@joetrum Not quite a cruise ship. We have a sailboat. We've sailed to Hawaii from Seattle via Mexico and Central America. We would like to visit Kiribati for at least a month or so.

      @@SeattleLifeguard Hi again. Fanning Island is 2,000 miles from Kiribati's capital (Tarawa atoll) - so, you are dealing with huge distances. I think there are small atolls near Fanning, thus check your charts. Fanning is - as you know south from Hawaii, so you have a doable initial sail. On our second visit, a German couple with a small child had anchored their sailboat near the main entrance to the ring atoll. They were swimming and shelling. I might determine if you need some sort of notification to set foot on Fanning and if so, where is the best landing spot. Apparently, years ago, someone blasted a sea entrance to the atoll so small ships could enter the atoll ring. All sounds like fun to me.

      @@joetrum Yes, we've checked the charts and the check in procedure. We're just wondering what we can bring (on a small sailboat) that would be helpful or a nice gesture. Things are easy to get here in Hawaii and our boat has some extra space.

      @@SeattleLifeguard We brought six soccer balls to the Edmund Fanning school. We purchased these in Honolulu at a sporting good store. The Fanning school teacher was happy! My suggestion: school supplies. Boxes of pens, pencils, crayons, markers, etc. Small to carry and easy to deliver. The cruise ships bring medical supplies and food 2x per year. If you leave your phone #, I will call you for expanded info.

    How does a westerner discovers an island thats already inhabited???? Smh

    • @joetrum
      @joetrum  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Kira, an excellent question. Fanning was inhabited in approximately 1100 AD by (likely) Pacific islanders although there is no solid proof of their origin. I was referring to the the discovery by the "western world". IN any event, thanks for commenting and please check out my TH-cam channel. Just click on my photo.
