Always need to have goodreads open while watching your videos so I can easily add books to my want to read shelf! As for translated YA fantasy I'd recommend the circle by Mats Strandberg and Sara Bergman Elfgren, it's a swedish urban fantasy about a group of witches. I read it a long time ago but im pretty sure it has lgbt rep as well!
My wallet always screams after watching your recommendations videos. You finally convinced me to read Juliet Marillier :) My current YA Fantasy favourites are Naomi Novik's Uprooted and Spinning Silver!
Spinning Silver is so beautiful I relished every single page. And I love the fact that it's a standalone fantasy cuz good standalone fantasies are hard to find!
The Prophecy of the Gems by Flavia Bujor is a YA fantasy translated from french, I think of it fondly and considered it a favourite when I was 13, but that was about 14 years ago, so who knows!
As a kid, I loved the inkworld trilogy by Cornelia Funke which was originally written in German, I think you would enjoy it! It is however definitely aimed at younger children, I would categorise it as middle grade
Oh I'm so happy to see A Winter's Promise mentioned here! It is so rare to see a recent french book noticed to be honest! Haven't read the last (4th) book but there's been a LOT of disappointed fans over here. Which shouldn't deter anyone from reading the series, the 1st two books are so new and interesting. To me it felt like reading a Miyazaki movie, with references to Greek and Norse mythology 👌
Libba Bray seems to always do an amazing job of exploring modern day issues through the lens of a fantasy story, i haven't read the series you mentioned (but will have to now) but I LOVED what she did in The Diviners!
A Great and Terrible Beauty sounds fantastic! I also really loved Girls of Paper and Fire, I need to read the 2nd book sometime soon too! I just picked up Akata Witch and can't wait to get to it!
Ooh the Gemma Doyle trilogy❤️ my favorite in high school and it doesn’t get enough love now. I loved all the different female relationships within it plus the gothic feeling was perfect And you definitely sold me on a winters promise. I’ve been eyeing it because the fan art is filled with dramione vibes, but I didn’t know there were gods involved
You got me hooked on Juliet M but I haven't read her YA novel yet so need to add this one to my collection :). Completely agree with you on GIRLS by Natasha Ngan too, she's brilliant
Another Terry Pratchett Discworld novel for YA (or technically for kids I think?) is the Amazing Maurice & His Educated Rodents. And also although they are more historical fiction, I would recommend both Nation and Dodger which are non Discworld. Nation especially was a particular fave for me :)
I am currently reading The Winter Of the witch. Love it so far. I had a few issues with The bear and the nightingale, such as the fact that the forms of discipline being used almost border on abuse. As well as the constant religious references being a little overwhelming. But i adored book 2 and am enjoying book 3💘
This was such a lovely video to watch, with so many awesome recommendations! The Inheritance Cycle was one of my go-to series as a teen too, and I absolutely loved it and would RPG fan-fiction of it online, hoho. I was also absolutely hooked by The House of Night-series by P. C. and Kristin Cast, and I'm curious to see if a re-read these days might yield the same results. I've been eyeing Dread Nation for a while, but I really need to pick it up now after the high praise, along with A Curse So Dark and Lonely!
Hi Jean! Great top ten! As for the suggestions of translated fantasy YA, I'd suggest "Nihal of the Land of the Wind", or Nihal from the Land of the Wind. It's the first book in a series by Licia Troisi, an Italian writer. And it has dragons! haha I thought you'd enjoy it; I know I did, back in my teens.
If you haven't read Graceling, Fire, and Bitterblue by Kristin Cashore, they are by far my favorite YA fantasy novels. Each one is a companion to the others, so the characters might cross over but each book stands on its own. Fantastic characters, world-building, magic system, romance, mystery...they literally have it all. Also recommend the Books of Bayern by Shannon Hale, which are kind of a bridge between middle grade and YA and have the most gorgeous, lyrical writing style!
Since you asked for recommendations for translated YA Fantasy, I thought I would recommend two "classics" from my homecountry: Germany. :-) There is the "Inkheart" trilogy by Cornelia Funke and the "Neverending story" by Michael Ende. It's not exaggerated to say they have been livechanging for me, they are spectacular. On the younger range of YA though. But perhaps you know of them already? :-)
Thank you so much for yet another great video :) Have you read the Engelsfors Trilogy by Mats Strandberg and Sara B Elfgren? The first book is called The Circle. It's a Swedish YA urban fantasy trilogy with witches and LGBT representation. It has been translated to many different languages including English. I really enjoyed them :)
Anya Hi, I recommend you Kerstin Gier’s books, she is a German author. I really love all of her books, for me it’s between tales and fantasy, and it feels so good reading them (:
Not sure if you've already read it but I feel like you would really enjoy Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones. It's really magical and full of unique characters to fall in love with but also extremely funny and silly with some wonderful romance on the side!
I have been really enjoying YA fantasy as an adult as well. Recently, I have started reading The Old Kingdom series by Garth Nix. The audiobooks are narrated by Tim Curry, and I have just been binging them. Another YA fantasy series I have discovered as an adult and love is The Queen’s Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner. It doesn’t have a lot of magic but it’s another world with gods that like show up every now and then.
Yes, the world building in A Winter's Promise is pretty unique, but I just couldn't get attached to Ophelia's character or her fiancé. And I don't believe in their love story at all. Very disappointed in this book.
Top 10 books about the history of classical antiquity? :)

I’m so glad you recommend The mirror visitor. It’s one of my favorite-of-all-time.

koritsi 21 I am actually rereading them right now...they are brilliant. Part of my childhood
A Great and Terrible Beauty sounds intriguing! Definitely adding to my Goodreads TBR :)

Thanks so much for this, Girls of Paper and Fire has been on my tbr for a while but I've added some of the others to my list!
I recently read and loved Katherine Arden’s Winternight trilogy, based on Russian folklore. I think you would enjoy them on the basis of this video :)

A Winter’s Promise 🥰. A lovely read, and also listening to the audiobook is excellent!

Eeeh I hope you you enjoy it!!!

I had no idea Tim Curry narrated the Garth Nix audiobooks - now I want them desperately aha.
Thank you this is a fantastic list and the people n the comments adding more suggestions is great lots of tbr 🤩😍🥰😎🤓😊
I need to read the last book in eragon books
In terms of recommendations, _The Dark Is Rising_ sequence by Susan Cooper has always been such a fave (it's more middle grade than YA though)
Thank you, this is a great list!
JEAN YOUR HAIR!!! 😍 please tell me why I’ve had the Inheritance Cycle books have been on my shelves for years but never read them?!
Honestly I need to come to your flat, put Eragon in your hands and stand next to you until you've read it because it's THE BEST!
Pick up eragon ASAP. Once you start reading you’ll be drawn in within pages I promise!
Have you continued with The Diviners series? There was a nod to the Gemma Doyle series in Lair of Dreams that made me actually gasp.
Omg where and when aha - I still haven't picked Lair of Dreams back up but now I want to aha.
@@JeansThoughts It's a three-sentence moment, very subtle, but I loved it. I hope there are more in the other two books.
Juliet Marillier has also become one of my favourite authors 🥰🌿
I still haven’t read Eragon! 🙈🙈🙈
I didn’t know Juliet Marillier wrote YA.
A great and terrible beauty I loved alot.
Your hair has really been looking amazing. Is it the water in Scotland?
The Reckless book series by Cornelia Funke is amazing! It's translated from german c:
I've read A great and terrible beauty, but unfortunately it wasn't the right one for me. Haven't read the rest yet
Goodvid thanks.
I thought I would recommend a book that I think you might like. One night with the king..
Yes, the world building in A Winter's Promise is pretty unique, but I just couldn't get attached to Ophelia's character or her fiancé. And I don't believe in their love story at all. Very disappointed in this book.
