I can't get over how the new 1290R's standup ergonomics are so superior to the EXC500F's. Honestly I think there are a lot of reasonably rough dirt roads where it is faster too, way easier and less fatiguing to ride as well. So comfortable too. Incredible electronics and useable power delivery. Been riding for more than 45 years and this is without a doubt the funnest, best performing, and most satisfying street legal dirt road bike I have ridden... though I haven't ridden the newest 890R yet. BTW, I struggle to make 5'8" and 165 pounds and am fine with the bike's size - at least as long as it is on two wheels.
Could not agree more. I love my 990. The is nothing like the feeling of blasting that thing off tarmac and yes...@5'9 and pushing 60, keeping it upright is a lot easier than getting it upright! Give it gas, save your ass.
always go to the Aussies for reviews, you guys are bad ass...here in the PNW most goobers bolt boxes and overload their bikes with useless crap and putter down paved roads...i prefer to rip....cheers from Idaho
Great video guys!in my opinion big adventure bikes will fade away,(dirt I mean) the middleweight bikes are the future,from 660 to 900cc's,cheers from Greece!!!!!

I’m probably a 80/20 road to dirt rider, could you achieve most of this on the S model? I don’t know which one to buy! I hate the colour of the R model also
I'd still pick the R even if I rode 20% dirt personally, better non electronic suspension and bigger wheels for when you do hit an isolated track, still awesome as a street bike and you can buy sticker kits to make it look like the S.
Great video with some fresh perspective. Trying to decide if I want to add a big bike to the garage. Already have the Tuareg. Looking at this and the 1250 GS. Or do I just go 890… I’m so confused
More detailed 1290 video coming soon 👍🏻 But, if you’re looking at more dirt road use, go the BMW for supreme comfort. More technical dirt, definitely go the 1290. But if it’s all dirt, go the 890. They’re all great choices though 😃

Going at high speed on bush tracks and you almost certainly find yourself splattered over a bullbar, hit a roo, over a bank, etc, you are not the only person or biker out there, ride with caution
I own all of the ktm adventure bikes and this one is the turd in the punch bowl. too heavy, under powered and you cant carry a passenger and gear because the payload is only 441. The 890 kicks it's ass.
Still trying to find a replacement for my (still) trusty 990...this vid adds chips to the 1290's pile. That 890 is sweet, but once you get hooked on that v-twin, it is hard to give up! Thanks!

Been riding this bike from August last year. Absolutely love it! Corner do come really fast offroad 😅🙈.
They do come up fast alright - it's a beast but it lets you ride pretty relaxed if want which makes it so versatile.

I just did a decent ride on the S with Karoo 4 tyres fitted and it was impressive offroad. If you're 80% road then the S will suit you very well.

Dose the front still feel a bit loose / tram lining when your on loose gravel roads at speed like the 1190r?
No, the front feels very planted thanks to weight distribution (the new tank) and improved WP set-up.

1090R of mine does all this just as good with the upgraded shockys now done this review is tame compared to what the beast is made for.
Would have been great to hear the engine through the trails instead of the cringy music
