    I still have a few minutes of your video left, but I feel I should comment now, before I forget what I meant to say. Firstly, I didn't vote for Windows95man, but I almost did. I vited for Sexmane, who, I think had a very personal song about his bipolar disorder, and the live performance elevated his music video. That being said, I love the song and the performance we picked. Let me explain why.
    Windows95man is not a singer. He is Teemu Keisteri, a visual artist (who runs his own gallery) and as the character Windows95man, he is a dj and sort of a performance artist. Henri Piispanen, who is doing the main vocals, is a singer and a voice actor.
    The majority of you see on the stage is coming from the vision of Teemu Keisteri. The idea for the staging is from the origin story of all living beings, as told in Kalevala and Finnish mythology. Windows95man is born from an egg made of recycled jeans. Henri represents the bird who created the egg - the denim strips in his jacket represent the feathers of the birds wings. But Windows95man is not complete without his jeans shorts, so when he gets them, he is complete and ready to make magic (in the form of sparks shooting from his jeans). The songs lyrics describe how through his character, Teemu aka Windows95man, has found the courage to find a truer version of himself. The character is the wind beneath his wings, the courage he needed to learn to fly. Teemu himself told interviewers participating in the ESC is a long-time dream of his, but he and Henri were didn't expect to win.
    I realize this can, for some, look like mockery of the ESC, or a pure joke entry, but I personally, especially knowing Teemu Keisteri is behind the visuals, think this is a piece of art. The song is intentionally very 90s, because it's an homage to an era Windows95man thinks was a safe time in his life. Every movement on stage is planned, and I assume it will be even more polished and tweeked for the ESC stage, if they get there. Yes, the performance is comedic, not to make fun of the competition, but to bring joy to the audience. I think the song - which is not the greatest composition on earth, but still quite catchy and fun to dance to - has a positive message. For us Finns, this is good entertainment, and we usually go for the songs we like, not for the ones we think will get high jury votes. Our one win in the ESC was with Lordi, and that is probably also categorized as a novelty act. But, No rules has a purpose, and it is to make people happy. This performance just is the essence of what being Finnish is.

    • @Sonnen_Licht
      @Sonnen_Licht 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      Thanks for the explanations of the staging and concept. Clearly a lot of thoughts and effort have gone into creating this performance, and I'm glad a lot of people resonate with it. Personally, I just don't like the song, which is always the most important aspect of an act for me. If the song is not enjoyable, I can't never like the performance regardless of how spectacular the staging is. But not everything is created for my enjoyment and I'm fine with that.

    • @Aquelll
      @Aquelll 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +22

      It is in a way a parody too. A parody of the 90´s, as the whole ethos of Windows95man is. And in this case it is also a parody of the 90's Eurodance. The lyrics have all the lyrical cliches from the era. You just cannot put "heat of the night" and "thrill of the fight" in the same damn verse without knowingly making a parody of the genre. But parodies are art too. And art can be fun and silly. It is a form of art often not appreciated enough in my opinion.
      And I do fully agree, the performance is one of the most Finnish things I have seen in a while. Finland is the land of memes.

    • @flopjul3022
      @flopjul3022 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      that explains why it might look odd/weird because people dont know the concept of the staging behind it. Did Finnish people know because of the link to the mythology or did they know because of an interview beforehand?

    • @Leena79
      @Leena79 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      @@flopjul3022 I assume most people had no clue about the mythology link before the song won UMK. I know I didn't. The reason this song won was mostly just that this is the kind of thing we find entertaining, and people saw how much effort was put into the seemingly chaotic stage performance. We like strange things in Finland.

    To give some context about the pants, Windows95man (which is a stage name of a character played by Teemu Keisteri, a visual artist and DJ) has said in interviews that he’s usually a sensitive, cautious man. However, he gets his confidence to be as outlandish as possible when he is wearing his short shorts. 🙂

    I really like the song and the sense of humour really appeals to me, but it’s cool that it’s not for everyone. I’m also glad you guys acknowledged the fact that this does have a place in the competition. I think a lot of people in the ESC bubble can have a bit of a sense of elitism, where only the “serious” songs deserve to go and anything else is an embarrassment to the contest. I just totally disagree with that. No Rules has a lot of thought, creativity, and personality put into it, and just because it’s a humorous entry doesn’t mean it has less value than something like Paskana (which I also loved).

    Windows95man is an established artist in Finland, but actually a visual artist. And he also has done gigs as a DJ for a decade. The denim shorts are part of his character as DJ Windows95man, we know that Windows95man is the guy with Windows95 t-shirt and too short denim shorts. I have the understanding that the UMK team took those denim shorts, and created the denim egg, and the costumes of Henri and dancers following the denim theme. That's just to explain why this kind of setting.
    I've also been told, that the egg refers to our national epic Kalevala, where the world and universe is created when an egg shatters. Henri plays the role of the bird that laid the egg, you can see a plumage in his denim jacket. Beside that, Henri's denim boots are specially designed to resembled ancient footware originally made of birchbark, used by some Finnish peasants still perhaps 100 or 200 years ago.

    They have told that their mission is to make people happy and for me this is totally hitting home! I was laughing out loud the whole 3 minutes of this performance!
    Also everything is so carefully planned, they have actually put a lot of details and thought into the whole staging, how they bring the message of No rules and liberation into their show! For me the humour is hitting home!

    I think Windows95man won because they were the last to perform and all the other acts had really modest staging (except maybe for sini sabotage) so they really stood out from the crowd. I think Finland really emphasizes a good show over the song. Jesse Markin was my favorite song but it needed more staging to be interesting. Anyway, I like that windows95man is there to spread joy, Eurovision is not always about trying to win 😊

    I enjoyed Jesse Markins' performance more than I thought. It totally elevated the song!
    2:40 As for why it did so badly, it may be because of Jesse's statement before the contest. Jesse said he would not go to Eurovision if he won, so there was no incentive for people to vote for him.

    The song is kind of a Europop Jon Bon Jovi's "It's my life" with some absurd 90s nostalgia concept.

  • @Pr1ck4chu

    The staging is actually not nonsense and Henri is one of the writers of the song. He choosed that they only would go by the DJs nickname.
    The director of the scene show got to know that Windows 95 mans biggest sign is his jeans shorts. That's why it centers around denim. He's born into the world in a denim egg and is finding himself ("no rules, that's how I live and how I find the wind beneat my wings"). In his quest of finding out who he is he's partially nude and is searching for his own self confidence and purpose.
    His growth is complete when he gets his denim shorts. The fireworks is a celebration and a way to further state that you should do what makes you happy instead of what's expected of you.
    It makes me happy, it's actually the only number that made me laugh (again and again at every recap). It's a feelgood message that you should feel beautiful and good no matter what everyone else thinks and it's deliveres in the best eurodisco way. Yes, it's silly, but that's OK, it's one of the perks with ESC. I truly love everything about it ❤

    Sini's staging could have shown the different layers peeled more clearly and dramatically. Different color themes for each layer could have been nice. 'No Rules!' is a Comedy music song. The music video of the song made it seem like Henri there represents his artistry, which he freed from captivity and which is a bit more than what he himself is on stage. The underwear had to be shown, I think, so people wouldn't get fixated on wondering, if he has them on or not. The point was that he hadn't his denim shorts on, which were a blessing from the sky to him on his career, since they made him popular as a DJ. That's his background. Artists are presented before their acts in Eurovision, which helps to understand where they are coming from as artists, which then goes to understanding their songs and performances. Now he's in fire and flies as a performing artist too, like his performance showed. The staging works, and it's coherent. It's his story as an aspiring artist. You two just didn't do the groundwork every critic should do before reviewing something. And it's not like he could be on stage without underwear. There are some rules even he has to follow, for Pete's sake. Henri does the vocals, which in Eurodance songs usually female vocalist does, so that's breaking the format also. And I think it's deliberate, and well done, that his singing is off just the right amount to justify the question is there something wrong with. Everything is "wrong" with the song and act, but it all works. That's the whole point. Whether you like the actual song and performance or not.

    Is there something wrong with the way I look?
    Is there something wrong with who I am?
    If I'm not alright, tell me why do I
    Feel so beautiful tonight?
    No rules! It's how I live
    How I find the wind beneath my wings
    It's how I learn to fly!”
    It’s an anthem for being who you are 🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️🎉🎊
    Love the message and also how it combines the Finnish mythodology Kalevala where the world is created from the goldeneye’s’ egg.
    In the stage performance the singer Henri represents the bird (see the similarity of the movements and the clothing) and the Windows95man is born (as all humans) naked! Finally when he receives the jeans shorts from heaven miraculously (mythology) he can finally be Windows95man (he has been this outfit over 10 years in his career) and he celebrates it with the party and fireworks 💥 So the staging makes sense!
    Why Henri is not mentioned in the title: He doesn’t want to be mentioned as he says he doesn’t want to be and that this is a project by DJ Windows95man. We should all respect this.
    And no this wasn’t my favorite song in the UMK but now I think “see if I care - see me slay” and have fun!🎉🎊😀 the world needs happiness and joy and LoveIsLove❤️🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

    It's pretty great that I made the comment to review this and you had already watched UMK and had this video in the works! But yeah, I'm glad you share my opinion on this song entry because I really did feel it was not the best out of them all. I personally liked Vox Populi (cant remember the names) and also Jesse Markin with "Glow". But this song felt very surface level and an uneven surface at that.

    Dustin the turkey was a national treasure to the country when I was a kid. He’s something of the past now though as he was first broadcasted in 1989. He was like the face of kids shows but mainly night time chat shows as he was an actual tv presenter. He was loved by adults and kids for years. People really did want to enter him so they entered him. It was a great year I think but I was also like 8 at the time. He was a massive part of our culture and media at the time so people didn’t think of it being a joke entry at the time. We just wanted to be different.

    I would like to add that you might get your way in the end. Windows95Man said immediately after the final that they hope Israel won´t participate this year and in the past few days Teemu Keisteri, the man behind the persona, has said he is not yet sure if he is available for Eurovision. There is a lot of pressure on him in social media to boycott the competition and he has stated that he has found the attention after the surprise win already exhausting. If he decides to withdraw then the next in line is presumed to be Sara Siipola. A quote from the executive producer of UMK, Anssi Autio: "The process has its own procedures. We need to formally agree that he does not represent Finland and proceed accordingly to the next candidate."

    • @Novympia
      @Novympia  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      This would not be us "getting our way" - we both clearly say in this video that Windows95man has every right to compete in the competition and that we would defend this right against anyone who says otherwise. It would be a shame for them to withdraw but we will have to see what happens!

    I wish people wouldn't get so pedantic about what counts as a "joke" entry or not. My rule of thumb is - I know it when I see it. I think some just get so offended because they think it means there's nothing good about it, but that's really just their own definition talking. If something seems like a giant meme, whether its polished or lazy, it's a joke entry. It doesn't have to be bad or good, just like jokes don't have to be bad or good.

    Sopp, are you guys gonna LISTEN to the song? This isn't a "let's start the shitshow" channel. It's a "cue the snafu!" channel.
    Anyway now I've got that off my chest, I just want to say I love this song. I fully don't expect it to do well at Eurovision (maybe top of right hand side, bottom of left...) I expect it will do well with televote, but juries I cannot call. If they appreciate 90s eurodance, maybe they will score it alright, because it's a good example of the genre.
    I do think it should be Windows95Man x Henri or Windows95Man Ft. Henri or something like that.

    Joke Entries: Dustin The Turkey, Sylvia Knight... But they have their place in history and they are incredibly infamous and it's unlikely they'll ever be forgotten lol. Novelties would include the likes of Lordi, Subwoolfer, Let3 and to some extent, Sergey Lazarev and Måns Zelmerlöw. And let's be honest, the absolute definition of a novelty act done WELL was "Love Love Peace Peace" by Måns and Petra in 2016!!

    as a Finn i think you're getting downvoted for nothing. i myself enjoy this entry, but it's very polarizing and just plain not for everyone. yes, the staging is based on Kalevala, but nobody but Finnish people would know that. if it needs an explanation, then it already sort of failed to translate, and that's fine. there are loads of people who love this, and you guys just didn't - that's FINE. i am experiencing that with my favourite of the season (Ulveham), some people just don't like that style of singing/music. it's all subjective.

    12:47 "I don't understand (...) so much messy sh*t (...) i doesn't make any sense". That's what happens when you rush into recording a video and commenting on something you haven't reflected on, but you just choose to say that "it doesn't make sense" or "isn't related to the lyrics of the song". Let me help you out here, so you can see it *does* make sense and it *is* connected with the lyrics........... The idea of the staging is that Henri (the eagle) has hatched an egg, and a chick (Windows95man) comes out naked, and starts his life by saying confidently that "This is MY time, MY stage, see me slay!"). The Henri comes out and shows that he is on the same page with his "baby". The "mother" (Henri) continues explaining his approach to life, while the naked newborn "baby" is running around in excitement and confusion, exploring the world he has just joined..... Shortly after, he is being approached by the "moral authority" (the woman with the "rulebook") who is trying to show him the "rules of this world"), which he first looks at, but quickly throws away. Then, just for a moment, he appears to have changed his mind, and seems to be willing to accept the "rules", by reaching out for the underwear that this world is "sending" for him to put on...... But once he puts it on, he immediately twists things around in his own way, starts lighting fireworks out of them and turns the "acceptance of rules" into a joke, then continues to have fun about the whole thing. Next time if there's something you can't understand, you can ask your viewers to help you out, rather than just claim that it "doesn't" make sense or is "not related" to this or that.

    • @Novympia
      @Novympia  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      This is a reaction video. We offer our first impressions and commentary in much the same way the majority of viewers will be doing so watching this for the first time at Eurovision. In the context of Eurovision, if something requires a dissertation to explain what is going on, it has failed in getting its point/message/meaning across effectively.

    Jesse Markin was very clear that if he wins UMK, he won't participate if Israel is allowed to enter. So I guess people didn't want to spend their money on someone who already said he won't be participating. And what comes to Henri, Windows95man is a DJ. Henri only sang for the demo of the song and told others to find a "proper" artist to sing the song. When it was time to submit the song, they just told him that yeaaah we didn't do that :D I do find it odd that they don't mention him though, maybe in eurovision they will
