I used to love this set. Was in 2nd grade when I came out and were the first baseball cards I ever bought. Would buy packs of these and Garbage Pail Kids 😊
Same here buddy! I remember the time that Cecil Fielder briefly became the desired card of that set! 😂
Same here. 25 cents a pack. The local pool had a snack bar and I started buying these.
How did you pass the Eric Davis like it was a common?! It's one of the most valuable cards in the set.
I started collecting seriously in 87. Topps 1987 cards with the wooden border is my Fav. I was in Jr high and had to stay over after school for basketball practice. I would save my snack/lunch $. There was a store across the road and I would walk over and buy Baseball cards with my lunch $. I will never forget the day I pulled a 1987 Future Stars Bo Jackson. Which was my pride and Joy as a 6th grader.
When I was 12 we used to bring bottles back to the grocery store in 86' and buy packs. Also in RBI BASEBALL Marty Barrett for Boston was like Barry Bonds hitting a HR almost every time at bat. 😊 So cool to see these cards being unwrapped again. Thanks Jabs your the man.
I know someone one up in Vincennes, Indiana that won a trip to Cincinnati Reds spring camp, has his own uniform from there. Yep!!
That Gwynn is grade worthy IMO. No Nolan, Sandberg, Winfield, Boggs or Cecil Fielder sucks though. Donny Baseball was the best card IMO but I'm biased.
1987 Topps woodgrain frame the best 80s design hands-down!
Hell yeah! Love throwback Thursday. Specially on rainy day 👍👍
That rumor only works on the face side of the card where it is a little bit "glossier"
This is the set that started it all for me. My dad would buy me a pack when we would go to the local ice cream stand.
Very nice set of cards 😊 oh and RIP Brooks Robinson 😢😢
Nice rip/commentary Jabs! ‘84 has to be the best design of the decade but ‘86 is legendary. Heart goes out to the Wakefield family
what a great year. My first year buying cards! Love this
Harper signed the helmet for the kid. Also the jomboy breakdown was quite good.
Still have this set. Love the design that screams 80's.
That was awesome to see all those old players. Thanks!
It’s still the best looking cards Topps made! I wish they would do a series in todays cards
What's a bummer about Rose is - woulda been great for Reds to have his coaching skills for players ALL these lost years...
I was a sophomore in HS when this set came out. I would trade with a classmate in order to complete the set. The Mets won the WS that year. My classmate was a Mets fan, from the Bronx, believe it or not. Don Mattingly was my idol growing up. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Cheers from Brooklyn, NY.
You went right by Eric Davis
This is the very first year I started collecting so these packs will always hold a special place in my heart. I even bought a complete set for that reason. This is an awesome video for me to relive my youth. I sent in those Spring Training cards, but never won. lol
Thanks for the video Jabs! Always appreciated! 🙏
I was a teenager when this set came out. It was the first year that I bought packs in order to put a set together. Reggie Jackson was the hardest card to find.
$85 per box seems high! No good rookies in this set.
@Drew-dd5nh Correct. No good rookies, just like I said.
If a brisk wind touches the tops of those cards, you’ll already be at a PSA 5.
If I was to become Commissioner, I would immediately reinstate Pete Rose and Shoeless Joe.
Back in 86, the hunt was for Dwight Gooden and Daryl Strawberry. Who knew huh. lol.
They used to sell these boxes at the Price Club in 1986 for $10 a box. Price Club became Costco.
Searched for sure, that wax you found on the back is from a hair dryer.
Thank you Jabs!
Ichiro NEVER passed up Rose. You cannot count other leagues. There is no argument that Pete Rose is the all time hit king and his record will NEVER be bfoken.
Thought I saw the Dykstra card, as I thought, there’s “Nails”.
A fun box for sure
That's a good looking box from 1986, most of the time they are warn, ragged, tore and crushed. I don't think them was in a basement. Good luck breaking and have fun.
That Larry Herndon card reminds me of something that's a bit of a Fun Fact about him: It seems that when he was a minor leaguer in the Cardinals system, one of his teammates was a young catcher named Randy Poffo, later infinitely better known as "Macho Man" Randy Savage.
Man. If just a couple of the rookies from the traded set made it to this set. It would be much different
I can't remember which set it was, but I won an original Xbox plus a game and an extra controller .
RBI 3 was crazy. Whoever coded the game was a huge Cubs fan. The 84 Cubs were nearly as good as the Tengen Team. And Thad Bosley was a HR king.
Back in '86 I absolutely hated this set out of the big 3. Thought it was ugly, dull, and QA was spotty compared to Donruss and Fleer. Fast forward nearly 40 years, I've found this set has really grown on me. The gaudy team name in front of a black background really standout. It's also still relatively cheap for set builders today.
Love that Vince Coleman rookie card
RIP Pedro Guerrero
The fix is in. No Ryan, Sandberg, Boggs or Fielder. Bummer. The cards are in great condition though!
I remember ripping that year.
It is a shame Pete Rose is not in the Hall of Fame. Seriously put an * by his name or whatever but, he has the stats to be in it.
For Pete Rose: his ban should be lifted. I was still against him being reinstated even a year ago. But the more I think about it, the more I think that yeah, back then I could see a lifetime ban. Maybe overkill, but justifiable. Today, no way. If they have solid proof he bet on the Reds, nope, he stays out. If not, he’s done his time and then some just betting on other team’s games that he had no control over. Players bet on football games, I’d bet, so what’s the difference? Betting on games you have nothing to do with, who cares? Go for it. For me, depends on what the guys that make the decisions have as far as evidence. Definitely bet on the Reds, stays out. No evidence, bring him back in to the game.
Good times
You forgot about vince Coleman rc
MLB and the HOF are 2 separate entities. So even if Rose was reinstated by MLB, the HOF could still snub him.
In addition to the Nolan Ryan, and Cal Ripken, there are several other good cards in this set, like Tony Gwynn, Don Mattingly, and Rickey Henderson that can have some value in psa 10.
Bo Jackson rookie, best card in the set…
Had to show a Murphy. I have that box bottom, but the Murphy has a crease. Please don't toss it.
Jabs - name a better hitter and defensive player than ichiro. Would love your opinion. Clemente? Pujols? Mays? Rose?
Eric Davis PSA 10’s pop count 4
Jeff rearend 😂😅
Searched box is searched...
Rose will be put in the hall when he expires. His on-field stats cannot be ignored. He will just not benefit from the HoF during his lifetime due to his actions.
First! 😂
Rose also swore for decades that he didn’t bet at all, so how much weight should you give to his swearing that he didn’t bet against his team?
Shilling should just stop
Bill Almon was the overall #1 pick in the 1974 MLB draft out of Brown University in Rhode Island. He was very highly touted, and chosen ahead of Dale Murphy, Willie Wilson, and Rick Sutcliffe in the 1st round. The first and almost certainly the last Ivy League player to be chosen #1 in the draft.
To this day, I wonder what happened to Dwight Gooden. In '85 and '86, he was supposed to be what Roger Clemens turned out to be. I guess he should've used roids to stay competitive but he chose not to and Clemens got all the noteriety. The 1986 Gooden card is my favorite of all time because he was so highly regarded in the day. Still my favorite wind up motion.
