My old man gave me a honeywell pentax ES that he used in his teenage years. Been sitting around in my room coz Im really not into film photography, more of a digital photography guy. Last night I was cleaning all my camera gears and decided to pick it up and clean it and to my surprise this was the lens that's on it that I've not noticed before. Long story short my m42 to fuji x mount is on its way now :)
I have the 50 mm f 1,4 8 element, the 50 mm f 1;4 7 element radioaktive and the SMC 50 mm 1;4 7 elements. They are gooooood, fantastic and wonderful made. After all the years the focusing are as new! I first SAS the lenses as a body when my father had these.
Thomas Edetun, I have a super takumar 7 element version. Is it worth trying the super-multi-coated or SMC version? Are they much better in terms of colors, contrast, sharpness and flare resistance?
There are som small difference, the Super Multi Coated and SMC are a little bit better. Concerning flare, contrast and so but i could be happy with either one of them. If you don’t mind spending the money go for it.

@@KenTheoriaApophasis Hello Ken, I just received my 50 1.4 Super Takumar 8 element, from Japan. 1393172 Serial Number, IR right of 4, A M marking, there is no POINT in the place of 2, has 6 blades and Back element is protruding at infinity, All characteristics are there for it to be the 8 element which you say is NOT RADIOACTIVE. But WHY it seems a bit yellow to me????? Also How should I go about not hitting the mirror.? Only way is Through view finder and NOT focus at infinity? Any other solution? I had the early 50mm 1.4 m42 screw mount purchased back in the 60’s.with the Pentax Spotmatic camera(Asahi) I actually sold it and purchased another 50mm f1.4 SMC-M k mount which I still have.
Every single one I saw on ebay was not declared as a redioactive. Either people don't know or don't want to mention it.
I have a 50mm f1.4 on the way !! ... I have the 55mm f2 which is INCREDIBLE when I do my flower pics !!! ... super sharp and colors slightly warm but sweet ... thanks for the recommend !!!!

I can answer the nikon reason for not really using it. We cant focus to infinity with m42 lenses.
Same is true for Canon EF mount - infinity focusing: the back element hits the mirror. If you are lucky, then the mirror will just get stuck, and you can release the mirror by changing the focus or unscrewing the lens. When unlucky, the coating from the mirror will start to peel off in pieces, or the mirror falls off, or breaks...

I’ve read that these radioactive lenses impact sensor noise and sensor coatings on digital cameras very shortly after using them. I’ve opted to only use them on a beater camera like a 60d or something rather than my 1DC.

You might be incorrect about the 8 element serial numbers. I have an 8 element lens with a serial number of 1,134,444. Infrared marker "ir" to the right of f4 and an obvious protruding rear element. Also, just an A & M for Auto & Manual switch. 😮
Nikon users have 3 hurdles with m42 mount lenses. Possible mirror slap. Using an adaptor with an infinity focus glass element making the pictures look like you are shooting through vaseline plus tons of CA. Using an adaptor without the infinity glass element limits your range of focus.
Kinda frustrating at first till i read somewhere that there are none of the issues mentioned above when those lenses are used on a Pentax mount with adaptor. In fact, the m42 mount is also known as the Pentax mount.
Glad i kept my Pentax K3 when i switched to Nikon.

I’m not a radiation expert, but I’ve heard others say it can be blocked by a piece of paper. Can you confirm or deny this? I personally don’t care, I just bought a SMC Super Tac f1.4 50 but haven’t received it yet. I now own 5 Super Tacumars and I love them. I love vintage lens videos! Keep em comimg!

Hello Angry Photographer. I adapted the lens on my Nikon, but it does not focus all the way (actually it focuses about 20% of the lens focusing range). Do I need specific adapter, or maybe another camera? :)
Yeah Nikon is notoriously hard camera body to adapt to.

The Contax 120mm macro for the Contax 645 2 1/4 camera was considered the best lens on the planet. Especially if you shot Chrome in macro. A 3-D quality unmatched. I imagine the Hassy lens with the same specs was right there too.

you're saying that the serial number needs to be under 800,000 to be an 8 element but from what I'm reading on forums mine is an 8 element even though the serial number is 1,376,168. It has the red line on the inside of the 4 on the aperture, the rear element bulges out so it can't be set flat on a table, and it just has an "A" and a "M" marking. Please help me!!! I don't want to be using a radioactive lens

These lenses will harm your camera sensor and from what I’ve read effect the sensor noise within hours of having it on the camera. There are coatings on the sensors too that react to the radiation. Best to use on a beater camera.
Heyah! Would you consider buying one off eBay, for cheap, but with a small fungus on the rear glass element - and cleaning it?

Ken.. I received one of these a couple of days ago. The focus dial is nice and smooth when the lens is off my K&F M42-FX adapter... BUT when it is on the adapter the dial needs quite a lot more force to turn when going towards the infinity end .. I noticed this is when the rear element is extending past the screw thread.. Any ideas ? I don't have this issue with my Helios lenses on the M42 adapter.
I observed the same thing with mine (with M42-EF adapter.) In my case it was even more pronounced. Without the adapter it just got sticky when extending past the screw thread, but did not seem to be a big issue. On the adapter it was so tight that turning the focus ring often took the lens off the adapter!!!!! I took it apart, cleaned and greased it. There was also external sign of external denting, but not very pronounced. I think yours might be also dented a little bit, or just a little misaligned or needs greasing. Taking it apart to do any work on it - take EXTRA care of it because you are going to be exposed to dust and grease that has been exposed to a lot of radiation. While using the lens once in a while is of no serious health concern (you get exposed to a lot more radioactivity if you are a frequent flyer), inhaling radioactive dust is a major health hazard, not just to you but to pets and especially children in the house. Do not attempt if not trained to work with radioactivity.
Don't forget your SRPD and film badge... is that an anpdr 27? Interesting. I never considered that a lens could be RAM.

i recently was at an estate auction and bought a aluminum case full of 6 pentax camera bodies and 7 or 8 Takumar M42 lenses plus 2 50mm 1.4.SMC Super.lenses and now i love them. i was gonna sell them on eBay but after watching a few videos on these lenses i think ill buy a couple adapters and use them on my Nikon F cameras. but wait...i was just thinking why do i need to buy an adapter which i have done already when i have 6 cameras that came with the lenses.. several different M42 mount Pentax screw mount cameras....thanks for the information..just dont lick the radiated lens
Couldn't agree more with the title...IMHO virtually all M42 Asahi Pentax Takumar's provide superb images...personal fav is the 55mm f2 (run close by the Helios 44M 55mm f2)...you can get rid of the yellow tint using most types of light (doesn't have to be UV)...careful though if using on a full frame Canon...may hit your shutter as flange length is too short approaching infinity...great video sir!

I'm mid repair of my takumar 50 1.4... the aperture wouldn't stop down and I've narrowed down the problem but don't know how to fix it. The two pins attached to the arm of the aperture control doesn't want to spring back into place. Any advise on what to do next? Interesting video... most people seem to say that the version 1 (8 element, including one triplet group) of this lens is superior to the SMC version. Also, it isn't radioactive. Have you tried that one?

you'll need a m42 to k mount adapter, I recommend the official Pentax one.

sghound, I can confirm that the 8 element lens is less sharp in the center, even worse in the corners, it has way less microcontrast and the colors are somewhat pale. But it’s not radioactive. It’s rare and expensive. I’d say it’s not worth it.

you may experience this since m42 adapters can be tricky to work with but if you use a good hyperfocal technique you should be fine

I did you have to loosen ring in your m42 adapter rotate it till you get it then screw it back to hold in that place where you found your spot by rotating it

I found a flawless copy of the SMC Takumar 50 f1.4 for my NEX 7 and it indeed has some very interesting artsy rendering of bocca in closer up shots, but it is not mind blowing sharp at f1.4 -f2 like say the Sony Zeiss 50 f1.8 is. Interestingly, I shot a fall leaf scene across a lake in my neighborhood and at f8 and above this lens is tack sharp BUT the color output came out rather washed out and de saturated - even my kit 18-55 beat it in the color department. However I played with contrast settings in the Sony software and got the fall trees to absolutely pop with color - even my MD Rokkor 24 f2.8 which is known for color pop could not match it. Strange that the SOOC distance shots were so washed out at f8 - f22, and even stranger that the file had more headroom to add more color pop back in than the other two lenses I shot with - Sony kit 18-55, and Minolta MD Rokkor 24 f2.8 (which already rendered rich fall colors and didn't really need post processing). Anyone else notice this with APS C sensor cameras? By the way, I store this lens in a lead lined box I made using 1 inch golfers lead tape applied inside a tin box that held green tea.
yes, its NOT mind blowing sharp at 1.4, but what it DOES have your Zeiss doesnt is (well the zeiss is excellent already at this too) stellar microcontrast :P

I tested an S-M-C version (7 element), and was really disappointed. A cheap Minolta 50mm F2 outperformed it in terms of sharpness from F2 to F11. Perhaps my sample was mediocre.
Mine isn't razor sharp, either. The Fuji 35mm 2 or even Yashica 50mm 1.8 are sharper.
You can't really get a sharp image at 1.4 with just 7 glass elements, even the sharpest fifties like the Fujinon 1.4/50 and the Zeiss Planar 1.4/50 are not as sharp as you would expect, lenses like the Helios 44-2 or the cheap Zeiss Planar 1.7/50 outperform them, but you know, they're famous for their beautiful rendering, not for their sharpness

No, they do not. Just do not leave the lens on the camera for extended time periods (talking about months.) Shoot, remove lens. Store lens in a container, away from your bed. (Do not keep it on your night stand.) I've been using the 7 blade Asahi Super Takumar on my M50 and 5D classic for quite a while, and the camera bodies / sensors are fine.

I found a Pentax Super multi coated 50mm 1.4 but it does not say Takumar? I have never seen a lens like this for pentax. Is says made in Japan but no Takumar label? Anybody seen one and what are your thoughts? I found it for a really good price...Thanks!!

A little late, but my D610 can meter with the 55mm f2 and the 85mm f1.9 on M mode (haven't tried A mode, because I always shoot M) so I'm 99% sure it will meter with the 50mm f1.4. I'm finding out tomorrow.
@@RubenvanKuik can this be used with an glassless adapter? I've been shying away from m42 glass on a nikon because of the inability to infinity focus.
@@ldyrtdyrt8872 The glassless adapters work fine, but you're gonna be stuck not being able to focus past about 3 metres. So they're only really good for macro stuff, half body portraits and headshots. I've since switched to full frame mirrorless (Sony A7II) so I could adapt anything. Haven't regretted it for a second. If you want to try vintage lenses, I recommend the old AI(S) and AI converted Nikkors. They're excellent. Don't use non-AI lenses as they can damage your mount. You might also find a few old third party lenses (mainly Helios) that have been modified for Nikon bodies.

How do we know Ken is talking about Takumars? He has the Geiger counter on his table.
The yellow cast can be a pain if you're not shooting B&W, but it can be colour corrected in-camera on Pentax bodies by choosing the "muted" inbuilt colour filter, and it will then supply a WYSIWYG JPG if that's what you want.

I have some of these lenses Pentax lenses with yellowing. Does that mean that they are radioactive or just old yellowing lenses? I have to dig them out and check which models they are. Can non-radioactive lenses turn yellow too?
I also love MF lenses and only use AF when something is moving too fast to nail focus or only have one hand to hold the camera while holding a flash. I'd like to hear about your favorite MF only lenses.
radioactive :) its the rear 3 elements that are 40% thorium by weight :)
Wrong on both counts. Only the third one (biconvex half of the achromatic doublet) in has any Thorium and is the only one that yellows. Not sure where you got the 40% either. Highest by weight are by far for consumer optics are the Aero Ektars which max out at around 30%. These lenses are likely less than 15%. Getting mixed msgs - does the back of a smc super tak interfere with nikon mirror when focused to infinity and if so is there a solution?
I do not know about Nikon, but it also happens with my Canon 5D classic. The solution is to get an adapter with a glass element. (There's a Nikon adapter for that, but no Canon adapter). Sadly, the glass will add its distortion, so overall, this lens cannot be used on a number of DSLRs for infinity focus because the back element hits the mirror. I'm limited on the 5D classic to about 4m/16ft or closer without worrying about damaging the mirror and potentially ruining the camera. However, it is perfectly adaptable to mirrorless where there's plenty of space for the protruding back element at infinity focus.
This also happens with many more M42 lenses - the Helios 44 for example... I was quite devastated, because I got these two lenses explicitly for the 5D classic, so I have a vintage camera with wonderful manual vintage lenses... which work only for close range, and there stopped down as the 5D has no tools to allow for accurate manual focusing for shallow depths. These issues are non-existent with the mirrorless cameras...
can you treat them with UV light?
I can confirm that UV helps to get rid of the yellow/brown tint. Even my bright bike lamp helped. The yellowish tint reduced drastically, but it seems that it can’t be delt with completely. I think I have only 5-10% of the yellowish tint left in my 7 element super-takumar. The rear element color turned blue from yellow-brown. But the remaining 5-10% would not go away. Maybe I’ll try the sun next time.

Yes, is probably better than a Zeiss that is now made in Japan anyway because the German camera industry is extinct at this point.
The good side is this lens takes great shots that have a special glow, the bad side is it can kill you. But, don't worry, the good thing about the known drawbacks is it can only kill you once. So shoot a plenty to outdo and setoff the risks. Great review, thanks Ken.
I have that lens and also the 85 1.9 that is incredible lens and the 55 1.8 that is wow. All S M C. My profile picture is made with a Pentax with film of course :) And yes they are all radioactive but who cares ,
