- In this lesson series, Vic Firth artist and Education Team member Dr. John Wooton breaks down the 40 Essential Rudiments in easy to understand concepts. This lesson includes the Swiss Army Triplet and the Flammed Mill.
DOC! You're the man! Watching all your stuff online has inspired me to step up my game. Let's go one deeper!!!! Thanks
+timothy Coyle i know me to lol :)
Know them and forget them 🎉 That's a good way to discribe something you just know naturally and applying it without even thinking.😎
Dr. Wooton, this series is excellent. Thank you for posting it. I shall steal liberally and footnote.
Learn them to forget them . Thank you .
The business! Great video thanks
5:45 What a great point!. I was wondering how I was supposed to work these into my beats and fills while thinking about the timing and switching hands . That helps a ton. "learn em so you forget em"... that takes some of the heat off and makes a lot of sense
I really liked this lesson Doc! Wise council.
That snare drum sounds great!!!
Free-floating shell!
"...and be creative." Thank you so much
The single flammed mill is such a syncopated sound especially when you played it FAST. Whew, both rudiments are a lot to digest in one lesson.
I love how open they sound...
Best hands in the biz
I think a cool video would be on a Swiss Army Triplet with a compare and contrast to a Tony Williams "Blusha".
my high school band teach laugh at me when I talked to him about having a pre note.. I was 14.. it just kind of made sense at the time to keep the tempo.
This guy looks so much like Arnold it's insane
Man.. I really want to forget the rudiments like him...
Danny Carey doesnt use SAT in a Triad song. SAT contains grace-note which Triad beat doesnt have.
Is that the rudiment Danny Carey used in Rosetta Stoned?
He uses many rudimentary rhythms in a great many Tool songs.
I don't know about Rosetta Stoned but I think he uses it in Triad (toms) and The Grudge (5/16 polyrhythm part)
@ kwastimus
I have never heard of Rosetta Stoned . Does she have good chops 🥁. I have heard of Rosy Palm ✋ and her five sisters 👯♀️👯♀️🧍♀️ I hear they play well together. 🙊
nice chops dude
Yes! wooton on drumset!
Thank You. 😎
Flammed "Mill" - That's funny because it's basically a shift paradiddle (a diddlepara?!) starting with a Fla, an in French, we call paradiddle "Moulin", which literally translates to "Mill".
Pretty much the same sticking pattern played if you add a extra note to the LH ghost note played during a Bernard Purdie shuffle, well who knew!! :)
Not my style of tuning a snare drum though, just had to say that, sorry :/
awesome flams.
Hey, Yo get it Dr. J.lol. I wanna jam with guys like you, I'm a good drummer in a dormant area.
If Mathew Mcconaughey played drums
What's a flat flam?
@OdaKa
you asked “ what is a flat flam “ ?
I suspect that a flat flam is the grace note is to close to the main note or rather to close to the beat or down stroke. Essentially you’re crushing the flam . In a certain sense you killed the flam . I was told by my drum instructor that the purpose of a flam is to broaden the sound of your stick when it hits the drum . It’s makes the beat pop or stand out where it’s more noticeable.
I cannot speak for Dr. John Wooton . Best answer to your question would be from Mr. Wooton. I have seen where he often answers his viewers questions .
@@markbahouth2713 Thanks for the explanation! That makes a lot of sense.
the faster you go, the less the spacing of the grace note ceases to matter. you wouldnt even be able to tell the difference if you listened, and indeed, if you slow the video down, even then you can't hear the seperation between the two notes. what remains to matter is the placement of the accent.
Aweosme vid. Thanks.
wow, this one is difficult to practice
as far as i know, in that song he plays a modified left-lead swiss army triplet

You said a drum roll is 2 strokes, all the sudden they are bounces? Go look I comment on that video. I say said try a Trippel roll with one stroke. Lets be clear the forearm and the wrist do 2 completely different things. If I want to hammer my kit... all arms. if I want to get tight all wrists.
Promark is better.
Teacher, score, OK.
No Sir you said it's a stroke, go back and watch your videos.
Wax on..Wax off...Wax on....Wax off......Wax on....Wax off
This guy has the hands of jesus!
Richard Tablada thats what she said
I've recently uploaded a video talking about the Swiss Army Triplet. Check it out!
