Bite Sized Oddities - CEMEX 81

- GE's Evolution Series are the most common motive power to be found on todays railroads, with thousands of these reliable beasts being widespread across North America and beyond. Of these, one was built in 2008 that was built for use, in a Cement Plant of all places...
So were starting off 2025 with one hell of a guitar solo (I did the Freebird thing). okay in all seriousness, Bite Sized Oddities is back again to a monthly schedule, with 2-3 episodes being released on select Wednesdays or Fridays. This locomotive was initially brought by TWR (The Winnipeg Railfan), and decided to start off the revamp of the series with this interesting case of the GEVO (the more despised class of locomotives according to railfans). Here's to the 25th episode of BSO, and here's to covering more locomotives this year, and who knows, maybe go abroad... If you want to see a channel update, check my community post to see what changes to expect this year i suppose...

CEMEX 81 was actually built to CSX's specs, as it was built as an add-on to a CSX ES44AH order.
specifically the same specs as the 700-839 group. 840-949, 950-999/3000-3199, and 3200-3249 are different
Great to see you back with another incredible story! Going over the purpose of Cemex as a company helps as well since it gives viewers a greater understanding of the operation and its purpose, so this way it's not entirely about trains.
The funny thing is because it works at an industrial setting instead of a proper railroad, there is a higher chance of it being preserved when its time comes. A lot of preserved diesels in the Twin Cities, MN area spent their last revenue operations at grain towers and cement plants so it wouldn't surprise me if this will someday happen to CEMEX 81.
I literally just saw that unit in the New Braunfels, Texas cement plant earlier today!!! What a coincidence!
Holy crap an in-depth video about CEMX 81
My absolute favorite! I tried seeing it in person once but I was greeted by that leased ex-CSX SD60I so I was wondering where it went
I have to admit, that simple livery does look quite good.
I found this quite an informative video! I knew about CEMEX 81, but I learned more from this.
Thanks for the video!
0:37 Clone Army. Reference from Star Wars. Good one for thousands of GEVO’s.
Good choice of opening 2025 with the Free Bird song and it's awesome solo, Halton :3
Interesting history for a gevo, never thought I would be so interested in it
There's one CEMEX near me in Victorville, CA, with a former SCL SDP35 operating there
What game do you use at 0:39?
Wake up brother! Cowl Unit Prod Just dropped another Bite Sized Oddities!
I was really hoping for a video of CEMX 81. Nice!
Consequences of no new 4-axle locomotives nor desire for them.
our conrad yelliving rock plant has a GP30 that originally was a B&O engine which operates right by csx tracks
I HAVE BEEN AWOKEN
Very nice! I actually saw this locomotive in 2017.
The most odd GEVO of all time
Definitely the last place I’d expect a GEVO.
A Mainline grade powerhouse managing hoppers in a small area CEMEX 81 man.
ive actually been to this town quite a few times, and never knew this engine even existed, so thats pretty cool. if i get a chance ill have to see if i can potentially catch this engine.
1:06 Alpena my Beloved😊
Glad someone else noticed her too.
Dude I was waiting for this comment
I like Trains, and I like Lake Freighters.
Your gonna love what loco cn just built
Glad to see another southern rock fan
I live this series! Although, I would suggest adding the USG Narrow Gauage Locomotives. Quite strange Locomotives if you ask me.
As someone who has to work with loading equipment for the cement industry, that cement dust is HORRIBLE. It's extremely fine and it WILL get into places normal dust might not. I can only imagine what issues it has from cement dust getting into the electronics and pneumatics.
They should have ordered it with the filtration systems used for export units to Saudi Arabia.
@whiteknightcat I worked for a while at a forklift shop. Swapped a remanufactured Nissan H20 engine into a forklift that was from a ceramic factory. It had a dual air filter system designed for use in a foundry. Even with that, the engines got dusted by the ceramic dust and needed replacement about every two years. The H20 was a very good engine too. Usually good for 20,000+ hours. Not at that place 😂
Love this series. I like it
cemex 81 putting the switcher in road switcher
I started the year off with eruption from Van Halen
YEAAAAA CONCRETE GEVO
The es44ac is my favorite GE gveo
1:34
I’ve always wondered about that weird truck design
Great Video Halton!
The series is back!
I do think this GEVO truly stands out against other GEVOs because of how well he does with as an industrial locomotive rather than a usual main line locomotive.
he??? Trains do not have genders.
we starting off 2026 with the gg&ht solo (better than free bird fr)
Great video! Also, 2:08 I hear Pin 💀
I believe we have a SD40-2 in Cemex here.
(For you fellow Brits, I mean a Class 66)
2:08 hold up IS THAT PINS VOICE FROM BFDI
We are so back
I saw a short that had A Cemex GP40 Number 421
0:11 my brother did that too when the time in Cambodia hits 12:00
That’s the only gevo I would get, besides 3 cn gevos (for c773)
NWE BRANFELS TEXAS MENTIONED RAHHHHHHH MY HOMETOWN RAHHHHHH
lol i did the free bird thing too
From what I heard it was a cancelled CSX unit and it looks like a CSX gevo
I've seen it in person.
I like the intro
its not really that surprising. i mean, its cement, its pretty heavy. having a GEVO run its switching operations on its own is a pretty solid choice. plus iirc the only reason why they bought it in the first place was for a promotion stunt partnership between GE and CEMEX. i may be wtong on that but thats what i was told
Its a bit sad imo
Thats like forcing an A3 pacific to run a tiny branchline in like warrington
Yippie!
"Ew, what on earth is that?" I see you took Pin's voice lines from BFDI. Didn't knew you watched that show
Cool video!
Wait, did you say, es44, cement plant? What the hell?
Do the Billups Neon Crossing Signal.
2:08 beefy die?
So it’s being used as a switcher? Lol
cemex must be rich or something...for it being used as a switcher its way overpowered
free bird drop goes hard
(also whats the song after the intro?)
Song should be in the description
brunfels 😔
Go to 0:25 to skip the horrible noise.
What horrible noise
WHY….. the fuck…… would you buy a brand new locomotive as a plant switcher!?!? Especially when older secondhand units are easy to find and waaaaayyyy cheaper.
