  • Following the outbreak of the 1641 Rebellion in Ireland, reports began to reach England of alleged crimes and atrocities being committed against mainly Protestant settlers in Ireland. On foot of these reports the authorities established the Commission for the Despoiled Subject in December 1641 to collect witness testimonies from across Ireland regarding what had happened during the rebellion. In this lecture, Dr Annaleigh Margey discusses the 1641 Depositions in relation to Co. Louth.
Annaleigh is the Head of the Department of Humanities at DkIT. Her research focuses on early modern Ireland, specifically on plantation, cartography and the 1641 rebellion. Her published work includes "The 1641 Depositions and the Irish Rebellion" (2012) which she co-edited. She also contributed a chapter titled "The 1641 Rebellion in County Louth" for the recently launched book "Louth: History and Society".
This lecture was recorded during an online presentation on 21 March 2024 for the County Louth Archaeological and Historical Society.
