Why all the repetition? You tell the same things over and over again, it is a pain to listen to...

This is a very fine 4 minute video crammed into a 9 minute timeslot, with virtually every fact mentioned twice, and some of them three times. Also he could have simply said "Gekko" instead of tediously using its full designation every time the aircraft was mentioned. On the plus side, the facts were interesting and were backed up by good pictures. As I said, a great 4 minute video!

The beauty of this presentation is there's no need for the average viewer to take notes, since everything is repeated at least once.

I guess the repetition was to ensure a time requirement was met. What was top speed? Ceiling? Crew stations? Where were they flying from? Squadrons?

Handsome plane. All the WWII Japanese planes look functionally beautiful. None look silly or weird like some German and British planes did.

I remember something about Kowasaki coming up with this type of twin engined heavy fighter later in the war, maybe 1944

The Gekko always reminds me of The West land Wirlwind.

Interesting aircraft but commentary repeated 3 times in different ways sounds like something from VP Harris😅

Interesting history, but the narator repeats himself far too many times.

Love to see the evidence of any J1N1 undertaking attacks with torpedoes. Also, it was relegated to reconnaissance duties from the original long-range fighter work because it was not agile enough in air-to-air combat (during trials, it apparently lost out hopelessly to a Mitsubishi A6M Zero).

My God. I don't think I've ever watched a more repetitive video. Virtually the same information about e.g. engines was repeated 3 times. And you really should just say 'Gekko' most of the time. Repeating 'J1N1 Gekko' every time was driving me crazy by the end of the video. (I see another commenter has made both points already.) I was looking for information on its armament, but, aside from repeating 3 times that it had "a mixture of 20mm and 30mm cannons, and machine guns" there wasn't much here. Thanks for producing this--it's the only video on the plane I could find. And sorry to be so negative. I watched the whole thing. But, really, the repetition was very frustrating.

Japan only built 479 of them.
It used advanced materials which were in short supply in in the long range with twin engines using a lot of fuel which was in short supply. It's top speed was 315 mph, If it ran into an allied fighter it was in trouble.

8:45 Top left aircraft. What is this? Almost thinking Mitsubishi G4M but no side blister and G4M has no sliding canopy.

This aircraft fulfils my childhood desire for there to have been twin engine versions of every WWII fighter. It's obviously a scaled up twin engine Ki-43. The adult me of course realises the backwards step in all round nimbleness that would occur in any fighter to go through the twin engine adaptation. The I-16 would have had the most comical outcome of becoming a twin engine fighter, it probably would have flown faster backwards 😁😅

You might be happy to know that Germany actually did make a twin engine version of the Bf-109. The Bf-109z ('Zwilling' or 'twin') used two Bf-109F fuselages mated to a single wing with one canopy faired over. Germany built one prototype that reported flew once or twice before being destroying in an air raid. The second prototype was also destroyed but never was completed. Records were destroyed in the bombings but a Messerschmitt engineer and test pilot claims it flew very well.

@@kl0wnkiller912 I bet the undercarriage made things even more interesting with 2 abreast. Unless they came to their senses and took the outer legs off and made a larger sensible inward retracting pair. Thanks for the revelation and will look for info on this. (after some research) Nope Willy didn't come to his senses on the undercart, that looks laughably stupid.

@@stevenborham1584 They actually widened the stance but kept both sets of gears. They planned to allow the plane to carry bombs and tanks so they increased the stiffness of the spine between the gears and widened the track but they did keep all four gears. I am a model builder so I did much research before scratchbuilding my kit but there are few pictures, only descriptions. I used William Green's "Warplanes of the Third Reich" for what information I could find.

@@kl0wnkiller912 Yeh. I suppose they might have been aiming similarly to the He-177 gear design/principle, almost making a clumsy dual wheel undercarriage with two struts per side.
